The Business in Development (BiD) Challenge is an
international business plan competition that aims
to stimulate entrepreneurship and reduce poverty
in developing countries. Business plans submitted
aim to generate proft and contribute to the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs - see page
105) in developing countries.
In this book you will fnd a catalogue of
high-quality business plans of the 2006 BiD
Challenge. All Finalist and Round 2 business plans
are featured in this book. The book also gives you
an overview of the 2006 and 2005 BiD Chal-
lenge events and results. Find out more about the
Challenge or read the complete business plans

2005
The BiD Challenge was initiated in 2004 by the
NCDO (the Dutch National Committee for
International Cooperation and Sustainable Devel-
opment).
In its frst year the BiD Challenge attracted over
1500 participants, and produced close to 800
business proposals. Some 200 professionals from
corporations and NGOs committed to screen and
coach plans. This tremendous effort resulted in
the start up of over 20 companies in developing
countries that help reduce poverty. Over 550 new
jobs have been created. Besides the 105,000 in
prize money, an additional 400,000 in
fnancing came from investors. Over 1.5 million
people were reached with the message that
poverty reduction through business can work.
TheBiDChallenge2006
The second Challenge was launched in January
2006. At the same time the BiD Network, the
frst online community for poverty reduction and
entrepreneurship in developing countries was
launched. At the Round 1 deadline on March
20th 2006, the Challenge had received 1600
business proposals from 94 countries.
Moreover, 6000 people and organisations had
joined the BiD Network. From the 900 proposals
that passed the initial pre-selection the Round 1
Jury selected 73 plans for Round 2. Between May
20th and the Round 2 deadline on June 20th
these proposals were converted into complete
business plans. Each participant was supported
by a professional coach. The not selected par-
ticipants were encouraged to write full plans and
68 were also coached. In total the BiD Challenge
2006 produced 160 complete business plans
(www.bidnetwork.org/fndplans). In total over
2500 people were actively engaged in the BiD
Challenge 2006.
At the time of publishing of this book the Jury had
selected the 25 fnalists. Between September 23rd
and 30th these fnalists, 18 men and 7 women,
came to the Netherlands for the BiD Challenge
Finalist Week. On September 29th the BiD
Challenge Marketplace and Award Event took
place at the headquarters of the Rabobank in
Utrecht where the winners were announced.

The backbone of any economy is the private
sector. Today almost everyone agrees that
stimulating private sector growth is one of the keys
to economic development and poverty reduction.
Not only does the private sector generate jobs
and income, it also spurs innovation and stimu-
lates the transfer of wealth, knowledge and skills.
In July 2003 Kof Annan, the Secretary General of
the UN, had two basic questions:
How can the potential of the private sector
and entrepreneurship be unleashed in
developing countries?
How can the existing private sector be
engaged in meeting that challenge?
Our challenge is not only to answer those ques-
tions, but to unleash the entrepreneurship itself.
However, there are several hurdles to take. From
the perspective of (Western) fnanciers and devel-
opment agencies, there are at least two problems:
1. Thedealfowproblem:
It is diffcult over large geographical distances to
fnd, identify and verify good business
propositions in developing countries. Qualitative
business plans are hidden, and so are
entrepreneurs to implement them.
2. Themissingmiddleproblem:
There is a fnancing gap between 10,000 and
500,000 (where micro fnance stops and com-
mercial fnance starts) for new companies willing
and able to start. In many developing countries,
the majority of all companies have less than 50
employees. So, if we wish to stimulate private
sector development and economic growth, we will
need to cater the needs of small businesses.
The Business in Development Challenge aims
to address the deal fow and missing middle
issues, contributing to small business promotion,
economic growth and poverty reduction in devel-
oping countries.

invested in the business. The sales before
September 2006 have resulted in a turnover of

fve kitchen workers and one administrator. In
addition, the business provides indirect

Employees are trained to produce a variety of

can therefore work almost independently. El
Castillo del Cacao contributes to the environment
by buying from Organic Cacao producers; the
entire cacao stock is now 100% certifed. In
addition the awareness of farmers, NGOs and
the private sector regarding the importance of
organic cacao has increased.

union. Burkinakarit buys their butter, which is
then controlled, refltered and packed for export.
Since September 2006 the union employs fve

Anyone could submit a business plan to the BiD
Challenge 2006, as long as it would meet the
following criteria:
1. Create a new business, or expand an
existing business; that means a new product-
market combination, or up-scaling of
operations with great development potential.
2. Require a start up investment between 5,000
and 500,000.
3. Seek to be proft generating within 3 years.
4. Target a developing country (developing
countries in the context of the Challenge are
countries that are on the DAC list of the OECD
www.oecd.org).
5. Clearly indicate how it contributes to the
Millennium Development Goals
(see page 105).
Selectionprocedure
The BiD Challenge selection consists of different
rounds. Each round aims to select the highest
quality business plans and most motivated and
capable entrepreneurs.
Round1deadlineMarch20th2006
Participants could present their business proposal
online in a predefned format. All submitted
3-page business proposals were pre-screened
based on the above-mentioned criteria. After that,
they were each screened three times by different
professionals from our partner organisations, on
the basis of the BiD Challenge selection criteria
(www.bidchallenge.org/2006criteria). The 150
best rated proposals were passed on to the Round
1 Jury (see page 48), who selected the top 73
plans that subsequently proceeded to Round 2.
All Round 2 participants were invited to write a
complete business plan with the assistance of a
personal coach and our business plan guidelines.
Wildcards
To give proposals with potential a second chance,
we stimulated all participants not selected for
Round 2 to write a complete business plan by
creating three Wild Cards. The business plans that
received the Wild Cards would be assessed by
the Jury along with the complete Round 2 business
plans, without distinction. We received numerous
positive reactions to this initiative, and managed
to match an extra 68 eager participants to a
personal coach.
Round2deadlineJune20th2006
We received 60 complete business plans from
the Round 2 participants, creating room for extra
Wild Cards. 90 Complete business plans were
submitted by entrepreneurs opting for a Wild
Card. After a three-day Wild Card selection
procedure, ffteen of these were sent to the Jury,
together with the completed business plans of
the Round 2 participants. The Jury (see page 43)
assessed all 75 business plans on the basis of the
BiD Challenge criteria, and selected 25 fnalists,
on the basis of consensus.
FinalistWeekSept23rd-30th2006
All fnalists have been invited to the Netherlands
for the Finalist Week. During this week, the Jury
interviewed the 25 fnalists, and divided the total
prize money of 150,000 among the prize
worthy entrepreneurs, with an award size of
5,000 minimum and 25,000 maximum. All
prize winners were announced at the Award Event
on September 29th.Find out who the winners are.

In 2006 BiD Challenge started two local hubs,
BiD Hotspots, to strengthen its activities in Peru
and the Philippines. Hotspots are organised by
local partner organisations with a strong focus
and network in private sector development.
The main reasons for going local are:
1. close the language-gap (local challenge
is organised in local language);
2. closer to the target group (participants
increasingly are from developing countries);
3. local screeners and coaches are better
attuned to local situation and context;
4. easier to promote tender and to monitor,
evaluate and follow up projects;
5. closer to local knowledge about the market,
more healthy access to capital;
6. local engagement and bigger impact on
local awareness.
In 2006, the Hotspots focused mainly on promo-
tion and engaging local screeners and coaches,
which resulted in more business plans and support
from both regions. A next logical step will be
running the BiD Challenge on a national level.
For 2007 we plan to initiate Hotspot pilots in
Africa, Asia and Latin America, possibly leading
to independent national BiD Challenges. The
pilots will be set up according to common guiding
principles, but tailored to local criteria, using
local expertise, investment criteria and business
development services.
Philippines
There is still hope, uttered Delfn Perez, anchor
of Business sa Radyo, during a morning business
radio broadcast in the Philippines. He was
referring to the BiD Challenge competition as
providing a gleam of hope to poor Filipinos. He
couldnt be more right, because within two weeks
the BiD Challenge received 135 good business
ideas from Filipinos. For PBSP, which aims to
promote business sector commitment to reducing
poverty, the BiD Challenge has affrmed the belief
that Together, our greatest gift to social progress
is not the money that we contribute to fund
projects, but our collective strength and
knowledge of business methods that can be
applied to the enterprise of social progress.
The Philippine Business for Social Progress
BiD Challenge Philippines
Peru
SME development in Peru is hot and directly
related to the entrepreneurial spirit in Peru. As we
plugged in into the International BiD
Challenge just before the closure of Round 1
only 42 Peruvians participated in the Challenge.
However, two entrepreneurs made it to the fnale
and will visit Holland. For us its clear that the
Peruvian entrepreneurs deserve special attention
and that a future Peru Challenge will defnitely
continue to contribute many quality business
plans and businesses. The BiD Challenge Peru
team is now preparing the set up of a national
BiD Challenge in Spanish for 2007 to increase
our outreach and to provide a better service to its
participants. The outlook of the necessary partner-
ships is promising, making the Challenge a source
of synergy.

From this year onwards the BiD Challenge aims
to further increase its effectiveness as a catalyst
for entrepreneurship and development. To achieve
this the BiD Challenge will:
Refnethemission: we will aim to stimulate
entrepreneurship which maximises development
impact per euro invested. We will report in terms
like euros spent per job and per company created
in developing countries. All our activities will
be benchmarked and reported in a transparent
fashion;
Monitorresultsmore consistently and publish
the same;
Fromprizestofnancing. Take a frst step in
2007 from a business plan competition with prize
money only to one providing loans and equity
funding;
Workmorecloselywithinvestororgani-
sations, who can invest in the best businesses.
A start will be made with Gexsi - the Global
exchange for social investment;
Createatwotracksystem for the promotion
of business ideas and the promotion of existing
businesses with development impact;
Franchisethecompetition and its infrastruc-
ture to Africa, Asia and Latin America in at least
four developing countries in 2007. Decentralised
BiD Challenges will be run locally, with a combi-
nation of international and local funding. The aim
is to involve local fnanciers and local companies
in stimulating local entrepreneurship for develop-
ment. We hope this will serve the mission more
effectively;
Improvetheon-lineBiDNetworkcom-
munity. We aim to increase membership and
interaction between members; improve the quality
of plans and amount and variation of members
and aim to monetize the network with BiD Cred-
its that can be invested in the BiD plans;
Changeorganisationalstructure. Until
2006 the BiD Challenge has been an initiative
and a project of NCDO. From 2007 onwards
the BiD Challenge organisation will develop into
an independent entity providing room for new
strategic partners.

Over 2500 people contributed to the BiD
Challenge 2006. Without them the Challenge
would not exist. In this section fnd out who make
the Challenge possible.
Partners
25 different Dutch organisations contributed to the
Challenge as main, prize or supporting partners.
Additionally over 100 other Dutch and
international organisations contributed by
promoting the Challenge and providing advice.
www.bidnetwork.org/challengepartners
BiD Challenge partners do not only support the
Challenge with money, but also with people. Our
contact persons went above and beyond the call
of duty to make the Challenge a success, and
were instrumental in recruiting the BiD Challenge
screeners and coaches.
Screeners/Coaches
350 professionals actively contributed to the
Challenge as screener and/or coach.
Steeringcommittee
The future of the Challenge is set out by the
Challenge Steering Committee. All main partners
have representatives in this committee.
BiDAmbassadors
BiD Ambassadors personally and professionally
support the BiD Challenge. They promote the
Challenge in their networks and support its
objectives.
Organisers
Fair Ventures, responsible for developing and
organising the Challenge for the second time,
managed to plan and execute the Challenge with
great success and to overcome any unexpected
obstacles along the way.
The NCDO was a great help in this regard. As
initiator and main partner the NCDO and its
employees spared no effort to ensure the second
BiD Challenge went off without a hitch.
Mediamatic, responsible for building and
technically supporting and maintaining the
BiD Network, has made a good start towards
creating a true networking space that brings
entrepreneurs and those they seek or seek them
together.

BiD Challenge is fortunate that it can draw on
an extensive business and development expertise
in her network of commercial and development
partner organisations. The BiD Challenge is
matchmaking. We match entrepreneurs in need
of certain expertise to screeners and coaches with
that particular type of expertise.
In 2006, we recruited nearly 200 screeners and
141 coaches through our Dutch partner organisa-
tions and Hotspot locations in the Philippines and
Peru.
The BiD Challenge gives professionals the oppor-
tunity to offer their personal assistance to achieve
something concrete in developing countries.
Results from our evaluation and interviews with
screeners and coaches demonstrate that they
believe in the mission and set up of the BiD Chal-
lenge: notjusttalking,butactuallydoing
something.
Moreover, screeners and coaches are great
ambassadors for the BiD Challenge and the entre-
preneurs. They promote BiD within their personal
and professional network as well as the business
plans.
Hans Lubbers ING - Coach of 2006 fnalist
Kinley yangzom:
Making a business plan with an entrepreneur
and stimulating him or her to get a business going
is a much more appealing way to me to give sup-
port than anonymously donating money without
knowing how its being used.
Two years of BiD Challenge experience confrms
the tremendous enthusiasm among employees as
they are offered the opportunity by their employer
to use their skills for poverty reduction. It creates
company pride, internal and external networking,
synergy and joy. Entering the BiD Challenge as a
company means a whole lot of opportunities!

young people are innovative, fexible and
knowledgeable about new trends and
technologies - all characteristics of successful
entrepreneurs. This is why we gave students an
extra incentive to participate in the BiD
Challenge.
This year we received 74 student ideas from 28
different countries. The Round 1 Student Jury
selected the eleven most potential ideas for Round
2. These eleven participants were matched with
Student Coaches, who assisted the authors in
writing a bankable business plan.
Eight participants submitted a complete business
plan. The decision who would become the winner
of the Student Award 2006 was charged to the
Round 2 Jury. The choice was hard; there were
several plans with potential, but there could be
only one winner.
Joel Abiera (20) from
the Philippines was the
lucky one. With Iris
Stouten as his devoted
coach, Joel developed
PINyAS (Pineapple
INdustry for youth And
Society). His plan is
an attempt to assist in
the development of the rural sector; the pineapple
farmers, the youth and women, as they engage
in the processing of a crop, known in the local
dialect as pinyas, which means small
pineapple. Congratulations Joel!

THEy did it! 160 entrepreneurs worldwide converted their vision into complete and bankable business
plans. The BiD Network is there to support yOU to fnd them and vice versa. Business in Development is
a joint effort and you are a part of it.
We are happy to see that the Challenge generates an abundance of plans, motivated entrepreneurs,
enthusiast partners, supportive employees, establishment of BiD businesses 2005 and lots of interest for
follow up in 2006. It seems that we developed a tool which enables everyone to directly engage his or
her expertise or network for poverty reduction through proft.
However, we keep on improving the BiD Challenge to stimulate entrepreneurship which maximises the
development impact per Euro invested. We are ready to continue in 2007, professionalise, and expand
locally.
A big thank you goes out to everyone involved in this years Challenge and we hope to see you next

teenagers. The youngsters are educated as
photographers of their own environment.
They also pack the cards and assist in the
local promotion of Fairmail.
proftable within 1 year
Needs
What Fairmail needs most are distribution
channels. For promotion and sale we need
a professional webshop. Also, assistance in
product development and advice on (inter-
national) marketing and trade from Peru to
different Western countries is useful.
main needs: trade &
business management advice
Development
Fairmail offers training and part-time work to
underprivileged teenagers and invests 50 %
of profts in their education. It also
contributes to (in)direct employment of
material suppliers, printer employees and
transport agencies. Furthermore, the cards
are awareness-raisers.
targeted MDGs: 1 & 8
Personal
As an experienced entrepreneur in Peru and
Msc. in development sociology, I know I can

To meet local demand for the end-user
chocolate/nuts/cereal products, there is a
need to establish a processing plant, in a
centrally located urban area, in order to
draw in the production of cocoa beans from
all the Bolivian tropical forests.

We need assistance in the design and

the development of end-user products. We
need help in identifying potential business
partners, as well as buyers of our products.
A donation of equipment can be very useful.
main needs: business partners &

Development
Our intervention in rural communities is
directed towards human development, which
includes economic growth and improvement
of living standards. We have obtained a
certifcate for organic production of cocoa

are being preserved, which in turn protects
the rich biodiversity.

Fair Ventures works on poverty reduction through proft in developing countries. We do this
by actively engaging companies and their employees through market-oriented sustainable
development. Fair Ventures is developer and organiser of the BiD Challenge.

The National Committee for Sustainable Development (NCDO) is an independent, neutral
organisation uniquely embedded and positioned in Dutch society. Its core goal is to strength-
en and highlight public support for international cooperation and sustainable development
and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
