Assignment 1: Bearing Capacity, Settlement and Shallow Foundation (Due Date: Monday 01/02/2010)
1. A strip footing carrying a vertical load of 800 kN/m and 2 m wide at its base is located at a depth of 3 m below the ground surface. One side of the foundation is filled with soil to the ground surface. On the other side an open trench is excavated and leveled at a depth of 2.0 m below the original ground surface. The properties of the foundation soil are: = 19 kN/m3, c' = 20 kPa, and ' = 15. Determine the ultimate bearing capacity of following the approaches given below and the factor of safety against bearing capacity. (You may combine some of the calculations as applicable.) a) Terzaghis bearing capacity using general shear failure. b) Terzaghis bearing capacity using local shear failure. c) Meyerhofs general bearing capacity equation. d) Considering Vesicss recommendation. e) Considering Hansens recommendation. f) Considering IS: 6403-1981 code recommendation. For different columns of a building, it is proposed to provide isolated square footings for each column transferring vertical loads to the foundation. It is assumed that the foundation is relatively rigid and charts of elastic half space solutions are to be used for immediate settlement computations. Find the dimension of footing for the following two cases where foundation depth is fixed. The settlement requirements shall be satisfied for duration of at least 20 years. 1500 kN (a) NC clay: Es = 20 MPa = 0.5, = 20 kN/m3 Cc= 0.36, C= 0.03 cu = 50 kPa End of primary consolidation = 1 Year (b) 1800 kN

Two circular foundations of 4.0 m diameter are to be constructed for two columns of a building. The soil exploration data for these two locations are shown below. Calculate the ultimate bearing capacity and total settlement of foundation for the given cases. Comment on suitability of the dimension of foundation for two cases. Water table in both the cases is 6.0 m below the ground surface.

The following data was collected from a plate load test carried out on a 45 cm circular test plate at a depth of 1.5 m below ground surface on sandy strata which supposedly extends up to 15 m depth. A foundation has to be constructed at 2.0 m depth for carrying a load of 1500 kN. Give your recommendations for the size of foundation based the test data considering only square shape of foundation. Also, mention the issues associated with your design based on merely plate load test data. The water table was later found to be at a depth of 4 m. What is your recommendation based on this finding if conducting another test is not a possibility.
