Scenario: Power Wheels is a car company run by Bash and Manny Patel. The business mainly buys and sells new and used cars. In the past the father and son have run their business using a simple cash register and paper based records. However, due to a recent increase in sales they want to invest in a computer system. As you will discover, their knowledge of computers is very limited. Theyve spoken to a few of their friends about this and you have been recommended as an expert in computers for Power Wheels Task One: Computer hardware components
Learning Outcome Understand the components of computer systems 1 Grading Criteria

Both of them have very little knowledge of computer components so you have been ask to complete the table given below so that they can understand the functions of the system unit components and peripherals. (1) Complete the table.

The motherboard is the main circuit board in a PC. Most of the components such as CPU, RAM and hardrive are on the motherboard. The purpose of a motherboard is to serve as a transporter of data from the different components of the computer. A power supply is a component that supplies power to the other components in the computer. The main purpose of a PSU (Power Supply Unit) converts the power received from the wall outlet to the power needed to supply power to the mother board and all other components within the PC.

Hard Drive

The main purpose of a hard disk is to store different type of data. It acts as a storage unit for the computer. A hard drive is a fixed disk drive that stores digital data onto magnetic surfaces. The hard drive is where all the applications are stored. There are 2 types; one is called IDE and SATA. IDE stands for

850W Continuous @ 50C SLI and Crossfire Ready 80-Plus Gold Certified (90% Efficiency); .98 Active PFC 140mm double ballbearing fan +12VDC @70A (Powerful Single Rail) Premium Design with HighConductivity, LowResistance Metallic Connectors Dual Thermal Control System: Normal and Silent Operation IDE: Interfaces 1 x ATA-100 - 40 PIN IDC Compatible Bays 1 x internal - 3.5" x 1/3H General Device Type Hard drive - internal Capacity 80 GB Form Factor 3.5" x 1/3H Interface ATA-100 Buffer Size 8 MB 3

Integrated Drive Electronics. SATA stands for advanced technology attachment. This is a computer bus IDE uses the big 40/80 pin ribbons. SATA uses much smaller ones. SATA is quicker than IDE and it is also narrow and smaller. RAM stands for Random Access Memory. RAM is temporary memory your computer uses to store things you are working on for quick access later on. RAM is faster than your hard drive so things you are working on are temporarily stored there so you don't have to wait while it loads. The more RAM you have the more programs you can have running at the same time A network card is a card which installs into a computer and allows that computer to connect to a local area network. The most common one is called an Ethernet card. The purpose of the network card is to prepare, send, and control data on the network.

There are 2 types of printers; there is a laser jet print and an ink jet printer. Laser printers use toner, static electricity and heat to create an image on the paper whereas an inkjet printer scans the paper back and forth it only takes a second to print A camera is used to take photographs. Digital cameras main purpose is to take videos or still photographs digitally by recording the images via an electronic image. It displays images immediately on the screen after they have been recorded. It can store thousands of images on a single memory device and delete others to free space. A camera has a series of lenses that focus light to create an image of a scene Cat5 is a certain type of wire, which is used for creating a network link on the PC. It is called an Ethernet Cable. A pen drive is plugged into your computer; you do not need batteries to power it. CD Stands for Compact DiskRecordable drive. CD ROM is a certain type of disk drive that CD ROMs and audio CDs use where you store data, music or graphics on. DVD ROM stands for Digital Versatile Disc Read Only Memory. It is similar to a CD ROM but, the major difference in the DVD-ROM is that its formatted to hold a lot more data. Very similar to the CD ROM, but on the DVD is faster for everyday use. The memory is increased by a lot because a DVD ROM holds more than a CD ROM. Consider a user who has opened up a word processing package and is using it to type a letter by entering data on the keyboard. Describe in your own words how data is communicated between various parts of the system. Start with the data flow from keyboard to motherboard and describe how it is communicated around the different parts of the system.

A mouse is an input device; The computer mouse is considered an input device. With a click of a button, the mouse sends information to the computer. The computer mouse is an interesting device that offers an alternative way to interact with the computer beside a keyboard. A typical mouse has two buttons. At the top of the device you will find a left and right button which allows for clicks. There is a scrolling wheel between the two buttons. The keyboard is an input device designed to enter text, characters and other commands into a computer or similar device. It controls the operation of a computer; it allows a user to enter letters and numbers into a computer. A hard disk is part of a unit, often called a "disk drive," "hard drive," or "hard disk drive," that store and provide relatively quick access to large amounts of data on an electromagnetically charged surface or set of surfaces. Today's computers typically come with a hard disk that contains several billion bytes (gigabytes) of storage. The motherboard is the main circuit board in a PC. Most of the components such as CPU, RAM and hardrive are on the motherboard. The purpose of a motherboard is to serve as a transporter of data from the different components of the computer. The CPU is a component on the motherboard. It is called a central processing unit and is also known as a microprocessor. It processes data and sends it back. It is where all the calculating and sorting data is taken place. RAM stands for Random Access Memory. RAM is temporary memory your computer uses to store things you are working on for 9

quick access later on. RAM is faster than your hard drive so things you are working on are temporarily stored there so you don't have to wait while it loads. A printer is an output device that you use that can print out whatever you want from a computer. A printer serves as a backup for documents It lets you print straight from a digital camera, SD card or other electronic device. The major purpose of a screen in a computer system is to display text and graphics, which are produced by the computer. USB flash drives are often used for the same purposes for which floppy disks or CDROMs were used, i.e., for storage, back-up and transfer of computer files. They are smaller, faster, have thousands of times more capacity, and are more durable and reliable because they have no moving parts. ANSWER: MOUSE: When a user clicks on Microsoft word using a mouse the energy flow goes to the CPU which then which then instructs the CU to retrieve it from the hard drive. It then goes to the RAM and from there it goes through the graphics card then it goes straight to the screen which is displayed on your computer. KEYBOARD: When you click the any letter on a keyboard it goes to the CPU and the ALU works it out, after that it goes to the RAM and from there it goes through the graphics card and appears on the screen. Task Two: Purpose of Operating Systems
Learning Outcome Understand the components of computer systems 1 Grading Criteria

Now the father and son understand the function of computer hardware, they are unsure of what an Operating System (OS) is and which one to use. You will need to explain the purpose of an OS. Create a short report outlining the functions of an OS and the benefits of an OS to a PC user. OS is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is an essential component of the system software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an operating system to function. An OS works like this: Firstly, your computer's operating system coordinates the demands that the computer's software makes on its hardware, especially the central processing unit. Each piece of software running on your computer ideally would like to have the complete notice of its hardware. It's the operating system's job to make sure that each application gets its reasonable share of your computer's limited resources in the most capable way possible Secondly, the operating system provides a reliable set of rules for applications to use in order to be able to interface with your computer's hardware. The system's application program interface lets developers create software that will run on computers of the same type even if the hardware is different or open to change. The OS has 6 main parts: Machine management, the OS job is to sort out the following items which are on a computer, it has to sort out the RAM, space used by the RAM, disk cache and also the Bandwidth which is the networking, videos etc. User interface, its job is to accept user commands, display warning signs when 10

P2

something is wrong, letting the computer know when something is wrong etc. Peripheral management, its job is to identify new devices when you connect them to your PC. The peripheral managements job is to manage these devices. It controls the quantity of CPU that a device receives. File management, its job is to produce and preserve file management. It also has to accumulate and arrange data and program files on the hard drive. It has to get back files when essential. Security, An OS security job is to uphold security of any threats whatever it is, if it is trying to access something the OS securitys job is to get rid of it and keep the PC safe. Also it has to stop any other user besides the administrator trying to access the system for data. Task management: To run other application, it has to distribute RAM and processor time for each task; it also has to give the significant task urgent priority to achieve the task etc.

The benefits of an OS to a user are that it allows you to use your computer without having to use a command prompt to search for anything on your PC. Without an OS your hardware will not work unless you wrote the codes in command prompt, now it is easier because you have icons that you can click on instead of searching for them in command prompt. If you did not have an OS then you would have to write in command prompt to tell the hardware what you want to open. OS manages the use of the CPU, allocation of memory, access to disk drives, control of printers and modems, and so on. All the input/output functions of the computer are controlled by the operating system. Without this it will be tough to use a computer. In this day and age they have GUI (graphical user interface) that shows you pictures of icons rather than you having to go to command prompt and entering in the codes. There are a few examples of OS that your PC can use (depending on what make your PC is) like WINDOWS, DOS, LINUX, MAC DOS. OS also helps the user by displaying an error message on their screen when something is not right like when the anti-virus software has run out it will say you have to update it, your PC is vulnerable. The OS also keep security and access rights of users, this helps because if a user does not want anyone else to download or install something the OS will block him because he is not the administrator. Some OS have features of multitasking; they can research something on the internet and listen to music or do their work at the same time which is very beneficial. Also OS have windows security center which makes sure that the users PC is protected by checking its anti-virus softwares. They also control the transfer of data to peripherals such as printers, when a user wants to print out their work the data will be sent to the OS, which will figure out if the printer is ready for use. Operating Systems also allow the user to save files to a baking store, it allows you to save work or important items on your hard drives and flash drives.
