SEQUENCE OF LESSON Attendance: Ss must be in the locker room before bell rings. Ss will meet at the tennis courts where attendance will be taken. Once students are ready, warm up will start. Warm-Up: Ss will participate in a run around the tennis courts for 1 minute and 45 seconds. One student will then be selected to lead the class in 10 3-count jumping jacks. The Ss will end the warm-up on 10 push-ups followed by 10 crunches. Introduction: T will discuss what todays lesson and activity is with Ss. Safety instructions will also be provided to Ss. Focus of the day: Pickleball- Doubles Strategies Start and stop signals: Start- I will inform Ss with Ready, Go! StopWhen whistle blows Ss stop and put equipment at feet. Safety: Be sure to communicate with doubles partner so no one runs into each other or gets hit with paddle. Always walk around nets not over to ensure safety. Transition: Ss will finish warm up and gather at the first court where T will provide instruction and demonstrate activity. Informing: Doubles StrategiesThe two strategies that are often used in Pickleball are known as Side to Side or Up and Back. These strategies are offensive and

defensive techniques used after the served has already occurred and teams are ready to volley. Up and Back: Ss will usually start in the Up and Back formation because the serve needs to bounce in a certain area. Ss may choose to stay in this formation because they are already in it. The Up and Back strategy is also nice to use simply because it allows Ss to cover the majority of the court. If the ball gets by the first line S1, then S2 will be in the back ready to perform a lob shot. If S1 is able to hit the ball, they may be able to perform an overhead smash. This is helpful because it is a much faster shot and the opposing team has less time to react. Basically, the Up and Back strategy is very useful to cover more ground on the court and be effective in returning hard hit shots. S in the front is responsible for the entire front left and right. S in the back is responsible for the left and right back. Side to Side: The Side to Side strategy is often used to cover the entire court. The person on the left is responsible for the whole left whether its front or back. The right is responsible for the right side front and back. This is an advantage because they are both able to reach most lob shots and can hit an overhead smash with ease. An overhead smash is useful because they dont allow the ball to touch the ground. The overhead smash will then be tough for the other team to defend when hit hard at their feet. The disadvantage to the Side to Side is the difficulty of communication when the ball goes to the middle of the two. It would also be difficult to recover if a lob shot is hit over both Ss. This formation is very effective if S1

used right, but can also be difficult to perform. Refining: Pros and Cons of both strategies. 9:239:27 Up and Back covers more ground. It is difficult to get over a Side to Side. Can hit it before it hits the ground. It is difficult to get around an Up and Back. Up and Back SSS SSS SSS S T

Demonstration: T and one S will demonstrate both strategies. T will make sure S is on the same page as them and ready to perform both. Students will be right behind the court to observe. CFU:- What are the two strategies? Up and Back, Side to Side - Who is responsible for the front left on an up and back? - The Front or Up teammate. 9:279:28 Transition: T will tell the Ss to select one partner and find another group to play in 10 seconds. One S from each group will come get a ball and others will get a paddle. Once Ss are at their court, game will start. Activity 1: Practice both formationsSs will have an opportunity to practice both strategies during this activity. It is simply a 2v2 practice on 1 particular formation. Ss will have 3 minutes of each. Ss will work on communication for both strategies. T is looking for things such as I got it. This will keep the team on the same page and make the drill run smoother. Communication is especially helpful in the Side to Side. Up and Back 1. Both teams start in the Up and Back formation.

Volley back and forth

2. Ss will volley back and forth until there is a fault. In which case they will restart. 3. Ss will work on covering entire court with forehand and backhand. Side to Side 1. Both teams start in Side to Side formation. 2. Ss will volley back and forth. 3. Ss will work on the overhead smash and protecting the front of the court. Motivational Objective: Challenge Ss to communicate during practice and game play. 9:339:34 Transition: Ss will rotate on tennis courts counter clockwise. Ss will then listen for directions. Activity 2: Game Play Ss will then transition into a game where they have the opportunity to choose which formation fits them best. Ss will use techniques and skills they learned in previous lessons in this game. Games will be 4 minutes long until we rotate, if time permits. Rotation will run counterclockwise. Ss will keep score themselves and play by the rules of Pickleball. Transition: Ss will bring in all equipment and return in it to the correct place. Ss will then stay in corner of tennis courts for closure from T. Closure: T will review 2 strategies of doubles Pickleball (Up and Back, Side to Side). What is a benefit to playing side to side? What is a benefit to playing up and back?
