PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
People with early dementia face enormous challenges in coping with their condition, but typically do not have access to one-to-one interventions for education and support. Because of this, many become isolated and marginalized. This workshop will present a new framework that shows how the various emotional, practical and lifestyle issues faced in the early stage are interwoven. One-to-one counseling can empower the person to come to terms with the illness while learning to manage and adapt to it. Given the opportunity to express feelings and concerns, people can gain valuable insights and gain the courage to acknowledge their impairments while also focusing on their capabilities. Participants will hear the compelling story of what people with early dementia can teach us about the power and essence of their experience. At its heart is the relationship between the person and the counselor, but any professionals wishing to learn new ways of interacting with these individuals are also welcome. This fresh approach is sure to spark inspiration and self-discovery in yourself, as well as in those with whom you work. Intended audience: Social Workers, Counselors, Dementia Health Care Professionals, Nursing Staff and Facility Administrators Continuing Education Credit: This program is approved for 5 CEUs for social workers. All participants will receive certificates of attendance. LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Robyn Yale is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 30 years experience in the fields of aging and Alzheimers disease. In 1986 she pioneered the innovative early stage support group model that is still widely in use today. This model gives individuals with Alzheimers disease the opportunity to talk with one another and better understand the illness. She was among the first to promote early-stage awareness and services and to facilitate collaboration among professionals around the world in this area. Robyns group model has been widely replicated internationally through her book, Developing Support Groups for Individuals with Early-Stage Alzheimers Disease: Planning, Implementation and Evaluation, and through training programs and presentations she has given in over 100 cities spanning five continents. She is a recipient of the American Society on Agings MindAlert Award. She also developed a model of memory loss support groups for residents of assisted living that has been implemented in many communities.
