PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
People with early dementia face enormous challenges in coping with their condition, but typically do not have access to one-to-one interventions for education and support. Because of this, many become isolated and marginalized. This workshop will present a new framework that shows how the various emotional, practical and lifestyle issues faced in the early stage are interwoven. One-to-one counseling can empower the person to come to terms with the illness while learning to manage and adapt to it. Given the opportunity to express feelings and concerns, people can gain valuable insights and gain the courage to acknowledge their impairments while also focusing on their capabilities. Participants will hear the compelling story of what people with early dementia can teach us about the power and essence of their experience. At its heart is the relationship between the person and the counselor, but any professionals wishing to learn new ways of interacting with these individuals are also welcome. This fresh approach is sure to spark inspiration and self-discovery in yourself, as well as in those with whom you work. Intended audience: Social Workers, Counselors, Dementia Health Care Professionals, Nursing Staff and Facility Administrators Continuing Education Credit: This program is approved for 5 CEUs for social workers. All participants will receive certificates of attendance. LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1.
