AS/400 Client Access Console, V3 and V4

AS/400 Client Access Console Description

AS/400 Client Access console support enables a personal computer (PC) to function as the AS/400 console. The Client Access console eliminates the need for a dedicated dependent workstation. It also eliminates the need for a twinaxial or ASCII workstation processor that is used to connect the dependent workstation to the AS/400 system. The PC can connect directly to the AS/400 communications port. The personal computer, which is used as the console, attaches to the AS/400 system by using a special console cable. The cable connects the serial port on the personal computer to an input/output adapter that is installed on the AS/400 system. Only one personal computer that is attached to the AS/400 system can use Client Access console support at a time. The personal computer that is used as the AS/400 console must be running the PC5250 or RUMBA/400 application to emulate a locally attached 5250 display station. The Client Access console does not support a console printer. Figure 1 is an example of a dedicated nonprogrammable workstation that is used as the console to the AS/400 system.

Windows 95/NT PC5250 Console

Before you can configure a console session, the base Client Access licensed program must be installed on your personal computer (PC). To install Client Access on the PC, you need to choose whether you will use diskettes, a compact disc, or a network (LAN) drive. Installation and migration wizards guide you through the process step-by-step. The installation wizard copies the files that are required for Client Access. The migration wizard automates the process of moving from a previous client to the Windows 95/NT client by updating the configuration information. To begin the installation process:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Either insert your diskette or the compact disc into its drive; if you are installing Client Access from a network drive, map this drive to the installation image. Click the Start button. Click Run. Type the path to the SETUP.EXE, such as D:\SETUP.EXE, where D is the drive where your diskette or CD-ROM resides. Click OK. This starts the installation wizard. The installation wizard now prompts you to choose the type of installation that you want. Follow the instructions on the display. Click Next to continue through the setup process. Follow the instructions on each window that appear. When the installation wizard finishes processing, the migration wizard automatically starts. The migration wizard will look for other clients that are installed on your computer. The wizard will then prompt you to choose the type of migration you want. Select Typical installation. Follow the instructions on the windows that are presented to you until the setup is complete.

For more information about Client Access setup, see the Client Access for Windows 95/NT-Setup book, SC41-5512.
