Utility Communications TEBIT for FOX515/512 Teleprotection and binary interface

Teleprotection is a key application demanded by any utility communications system. Distance protection relays need to exchange information in order to operate correctly and provide fast reaction times in case of any fault on the power line. Reaction times within milliseconds are essential to prevent damage to industrial assets worth millions of investment. The relays exchange trip signals between each other which allows the relays to localize a fault faster and more selectively. Such critical applications ask for very fast signal transmission on one hand and for very high dependability (probability to miss a command) and security (probability of a false, unwanted command) on the other. The communications service needs to be guaranteed at any time, so accordingly highest availability of the teleprotection interfaces and communications channel needs to be ensured.

The TEBIT Teleprotection interface module provides four command inputs and outputs for distance protection applications and guaranties highest reliability and dependability of the communications channel. Continuous supervision of the availability of the data channel, fastest switchover from main to protecting channel (< 5 ms) and automatic loop test for delay measurement make the TEBIT interface the ideal solution for distance protection signal transmission. Accordingly the FOX515 can be directly interconnected with the protection relay and be used for teleprotection signal transmission via WAN network. FOX515 can be used as a combined communication/teleprotection equipment and thus provides a unique solution optimised for power utilities. The FOX515/TEBIT solution helps to save costs by providing several benefits such as less space requirements, fully integrated solution with one configuration tool and management system for all services.

TEBIT outstanding features for ABB's demanding customers

Specially designed for utilities The TEBIT interface has been specifically designed for distance protection applications. Therefore it provides exactly the features required by power utilities. Having a fibre optic multiplexer integrated solution allows to provide optimized end to end solutions for your mission critical application. Besides, TEBIT also saves space and ensures full supervision by the network management system (FOXMAN). TEBIT at a glance 4 x command inputs for trip signals 4 x outputs for solid state trip signals 2 x programmable auxiliary relay which can be used e.g. for alarm outputs 8 x inputs and outputs for binary signal transmission Nonvolatile event recorder with GPS synchronization and trip counter All inputs and outputs are galvanically isolated and with high EMC immunity for harsh environment 1+1 path protection with very fast switchover time (< 5 ms) Supports point to point and Tee-line configuration The command inputs of TEBIT have been designed for direct connection to the protection relay. They are software configurable for trip voltage levels from 24 to 250 VDC. TEBIT complies to Teleprotection standard IEC 60834-1 and can be configured for: Permissive tripping Intertripping Blocking / non-blocking Tee-lines (normal or inverse) Security, dependability and transmission speed programmable as per requirements Continuous performance monitoring for each command channel 4 x protection signals per 64 kbit/s channel Trip transmission time measurement

An 8 bit command addressing scheme ensures correct cross connection and the very fast 1+1 switchover in case of link failure ensures highest reliability of the communication channel.
An wrongly rerouted channel will be detected by means of the SFC address

TEBIT architecture The TEBIT is part of a large complement of interface modules which can be plugged into a FOX515 shelf. Like all FOX515 modules TEBIT is: powered from the FOX515 shelf configured by UCST and supervised by FOXMAN-Management system Two front connectors provide access to the teleprotection and binary inputs and outputs. Alarm states are displayed by LEDs. TEBIT includes a non volatile event recorder with an outstanding accuracy, synchronizable with the GPS system and trip counter. Cyclic loop tests allow permanent channel monitoring, and add / drop features allow efficient use of bandwidth. All Teleprotection inputs and outputs are galvanically isolated and provide highest EMC immunity for harsh environment. The TEBIT has an integrated cross connect with drop and insert functionality for single commands.

Binary data channels 8 x opto-coupler inputs 24 to 60 VDC 8 x solid-state relay outputs All inputs and outputs galvanically isolated Cross-connect and drop-and-insert facilities for each binary signal Point-to-multipoint operation Transmission of slow data up to 20 bd 1+1 path protection Integrated galvanically isolated 24 V auxiliary supply 8 x binary signals per 64 kbit/s channel

It is possible to protect more than one power line using one TEBIT module (e.g. if only two commands are used per power line). Station C of the picture below shows such a configuration. Station A, B and C are connected in a Tee-line configu-

ration. Trip signals (Trip signal 1 and 2) are broadcast to the two opposite stations. Trip-signal 3 and 4 are configured in a point-to-point connection. A GPS receiver provides an accurate time reference for the event recorder.
