The Assignment
Take at least 20 pictures from around the school. You will choose 3 to be on the slide presentation I would like you to mix up your subjects (people, grass, birds) You will have at least 1 picture that shows texture, contrast, repetition, line, and color Be prepared to tell me which one is which I will have you in groups of 2. I expect you to behave.

How camera works

Aperture

aperture
To increase or decrease the amount of light passing through the lens, you have to change the size of the aperture -- the lens opening. Essentially, this mechanism works the same way as the iris in your eye -- it opens or closes in a circle, to shrink or expand the diameter of the lens. When the lens is smaller, it captures less light, and when it is larger, it captures more light.

Aperture

Shutter Speed

When you set the knob to a very slow shutter speed, the shutter is open for a very long time. When you set the knob to a very high speed, the film frame is exposed for a short time. High Speed- Action Shots Slow speed is another way for low light conditions Tripods are used in lowlight conditions

SLR Camera
SLR cameras do not have a lens attached to the body of the camera. Instead, photographers will have to screw-on or "mount" a lens to the camera body to take a picture. This allows a photographer to use a variety of different lenses to achieve various photographic effects.

Final Image
allows the focus visible in the viewfinder to be the same as the final image.

Most standard cameras work automatically, with little flexabilty. An SLR camera can be adjusted in many ways to capture the best possible picture.

SLR cameras also allow photographers to manually set aperture. They are commonly referred to as "f-stops" and control the depth of field, or the focused area in your image. Higher f-stops allow for a "deep" depth-of-field; meaning, both the foreground and background are in focus. When set to a low f-stop number, such as f2.8 or f4, you will get a "shallow" depth-of-field: the foreground will appear in focus, while the background is very blurry

Traditional v. Digital
Traditional film uses a chemical process to imprint the image sent from the lens to film. Similarly, a digital camera also uses a shutter and eye to capture light from an image. However, instead of using a chemical process to imprint the image on a film negative, a digital camera captures the image digitally. Digital allow for immediate review but traditional film cameras can take better pictures

SLR v. point and shoot v. phones

SLR Cameras allow for change of lenses (wide angle, zoom lenses. Lenses allow for high optical zoom. Usually have large MPs Point and Shoot cant change lenses. Lower optical zoom. Cant see the exact final picture out of view finder. Lower MPs Phone have no optical zoom, low MPs (5 MPs)

What to look for

Optical zoom- zoom that is made by lenses and does not change picture quality Digital Zoom- artificial zoom that lowers picture qaulity Megapixals. The more MPs the more detail the camera can catch without being grainy

Tips
Blurry pictures are caused by low light and or a combination of moving objects. Take pictures in medium light Bright/ noon day light removes interesting shadows Avoid dim light with ipods and digital cameras in the wrong settings Check, Check, Check for bluryness Brace elbows on stable objects Best time of day to take pictures is morning and late afternoon

Close up pictures of objects are usually better Try taking pictures from different angles Think about oooompth and pizzazs?? The best photographers can make a boring object look interesting Anyone can take a picture of a flower or rainbow Do not give me pictures of people posing and smiling unless you have thought about the elements of art
