Henry Schein Dental UK Announces Launch of Oral Health Programme to Fight Early Tooth Decay in Children of Northern Ireland
Gillingham, 23 October 2013 Henry Schein Dental UK, in partnership with North Street Dental Care, Lurgan, dental office and Colgate UK, announced the launch of an innovative oral health programme in Northern Ireland. The programme, Helping Kids Smile, is designed to provide education and oral health preventative and treatment services to underserved populations of primary school students. The school children participating in Helping Kids Smile will receive instruction on how to brush their teeth, learn about oral hygiene, and receive dental examination every six months over the next two years. Helping Kids Smile carries the general mandate to increase access to care, to provide wellness education, and to promote prevention for at-risk and underserved populations, said Simon Gambold, Managing Director of Henry Schein Dental UK. We at Henry Schein Dental UK acknowledge the importance of promoting oral health in populations who are not, for whatever reason, accessing dental services. The programme was launched in recognition of the critical oral health issue that early tooth decay presents to primary school children in deprived communities within the United Kingdom. During dental health education sessions, children, with the aid of a lead classroom teacher, will learn methods of dental upkeep, such as maintaining a consistent brushing schedule, using proper brushing techniques, and eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet. Clinical dental assessments will be provided to them by local dental practitioners every six months over two years to determine immediate treatment needs and to track the progress of the programme as an early intervention model for promoting oral health. These routine treatments that couple children without access to oral health care with preventative services will reduce the need for children to undergo complicated and expensive procedures in the future. Envisioned as a public-private partnership between oral health professionals, the dental industry, and local governments and school boards, Helping Kids Smile provides the educational foundation, the necessary materials and supplies, the community support mechanisms and public facilities, and the expertise of volunteer dental practitioners to combat the oral health challenges facing Northern Irelands underserved population of children. By securing volunteer dental services from local dental practitioners, coordinating with schools, and supplying prevention and treatment supplies, Henry Schein Dental UK, together with Henry Schein Cares, Henry Scheins global corporate social responsibility arm, brings together key stakeholders in the fight against childhood tooth decay under the Helping Kids Smile programme.
