Dear Friends in Christ: Welcome to this years Chicago Catechetical Conference. As catechists, you are Ministers of the Word and Disciples of Jesus Christ. This years theme: Believe, Deepen, Proclaim, The New Evangelization, challenges each of us to deepen our own faith as we strive to re-propose the Gospel to family, friends and neighbors so they can get closer to Jesus Christ. I am pleased that the 2013 Chicago Catechetical Conference is inviting participants to reflect on their own faith life as well as the call to the New Evangelization in an intentional way through the keynote presentations, enrichment sessions, and the occasions for prayer each day. We catechists need to deepen our own understanding of our call to embrace the Gospel and make it part of our lives and to discover ways to form others through our teaching, prayer, and worship. I pray that the Lord give you joy and zeal in your catechetical ministry and that this conference will deepen your personal faith so you can better strengthen the faith of others. El tema para la conferencia de este ao: Cree, Profundiza y Proclama: La Nueva Evangelizacin, nos reta a cada uno de nosotros a profundizar nuestra fe en nuestra lucha por volver a proponer el Evangelio a la familia, a los amigos y a nuestros vecinos para que puedan acercarse al Seor. Evangelizing Witness: Stand with the Lord Pope Benedict, in declaring the Year of Faith wrote that Faith is choosing to stand with the Lord so as to live with him. How do believing and deepening prepare us to stand with Jesus Christ? How does our standing with him help us to proclaim the faith as we witness to what we believe? Dr. Carole Eipers is Vice President, Executive Director of Catechetics for William H. Sadlier, Inc. She served in parish ministries for over 20 years as a teacher, Director of Religious Education, Youth Minister and Pastoral Associate. Carole was Director of the Office for Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Chicago for nine years and also served as President of the National Conference of Catechetical Leadership. Carole has been a member of the adjunct faculties of Mundelein Seminary, Loyola University Chicago Loyola New Orleans and Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

The Conclave, Pope Francis and the New Evangelization: The Style is Substance Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Ph.D., S.T.D., was born on January 16, 1937 in Chicago to Francis J. and Julia R. (McCarthy) George. After attending St. Pascal Elementary School in Chicago, he attended St. Henry Preparatory Seminary in Belleville, IL. He entered the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate on August 14, 1957. Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Yakima in Washington on July 10, 1990, and then appointed him Archbishop of Portland in Oregon on April 30, 1996. Less than a year later, on April 8, 1997, Pope John Paul named him the eighth Archbishop of Chicago. He is the first native Chicagoan to serve as Archbishop of Chicago. On January 18, 1998, Pope John Paul II announced Archbishop Georges elevation to the Sacred College of Cardinals.

Keynote Address in English -The New Evangelization: Whats a Catechist to do?
The New Evangelization calls each of us to deepen our faith to believe in the Gospel message - and to go forth to proclaim the Gospel. But do we as catechists really believe? How do we proclaim? Can we deepen the faith of those we minister to in the secular world today when so many are experiencing a crisis of faith? A tall order but Mark will weave theology and catechesis together with prayer, music, storytelling, and a bit of humor and suggest ways we can begin to sort it all out. Mark Friedman is highly regarded throughout the United States as a religious educator, teacher, author, and composer of religious music. He holds an undergraduate degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati, and a Master of Arts in Religion and Pastoral Ministry from the Athenaeum of Ohio/ Mt. St. Marys Seminary. Mark began his work in education as a classroom religion teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he became a religion curriculum specialist, conducting workshops for teachers in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

Sonia Avi tiene una maestra de Immaculata University en liderazgo educativo y actualmente est inscrita en el programa de MA en la pastoral con concentracin en el Ministerio Hispano en el Colegio de Boston. Sonia es actualmente la Directora de formacin de fe en nuestra Seora de Ftima, Bensalem, PA. Baima, Very Reverend Thomas A. Very Reverend Thomas A. Baima is Vicar for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the Archdiocese of Chicago and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. A full professor of dogmatic theology, Father Baima teaches in the areas of ecclesiology, ecumenism, interreligious dialogue and mission. Brennan, Margaret M. Margaret Brennan received her Doctor of Ministry degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. She has worked as an editor and writer for Liturgy Training Publications, focusing primarily on the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd imprint publications and products for children and families. Burland, John John Burland is an acclaimed composer and educator in the Office of Liturgy and Music in the Archdiocese of Sydney, Australia. Through his recordings and DVDs John invites children of all ages to know and love our Lord and the Catholic faith. Butigan, Ken Ken Butigan, Ph.D. teaches in the Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies Department at DePaul University and is a member of the archdioceses Cathoics for Nonviolence Network. He is also the Executive Director of Pace e Bene Nonviolence Servie, a nonviolence training organization rooted in Franciscan spirituality. Castillo, Javier Javier Castillo is the coordinator of Spanish Language catechesis in the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry within the Archdiocese of Chicago. Before starting his work with the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry, he worked as a pastoral associate and coordinator of religious education at Saint Francis de Sales for six years.

The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. So, then, I discover the principle that when I want to do right, evil is at hand. For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self, but I see in my members another principle at war with the law of my mind, taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Brothers and sisters: Now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death. For what the law, weakened by the flesh, was powerless to do, this God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for the sake of sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous decree of the law might be fulfilled in us, who live not according to the flesh but according to the spirit. For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit. The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace. For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it; and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you.

Hermanos y Hermanas: Ahora no pesa condena alguna sobre los que estn unidos a Cristo Jess, pues, por la unin con Cristo Jess, la ley del Espritu de vida me ha librado de la ley del pecado y de la muerte. Lo que no pudo hacer la Ley, reducida a la impotencia por la carne, lo ha hecho Dios: envi a su Hijo encarnado en una carne pecadora como la nuestra, hacindolo vctima por el pecado, y en su carne conden el pecado. As, la justicia que propona la Ley puede realizarse en nosotros, que ya no procedemos dirigidos por la carne, sino por el Espritu. Por-que los que se dejan dirigir por la carne tienden a lo carnal; en cambio, los que se dejan dirigir por el Espritu tienden a lo espiritual. Nuestra carne tiende a la muerte; el Espritu, a la vida y a la paz. Porque la tendencia de la carne es rebelarse contra Dios; no slo no se somete a la ley de Dios, ni siquiera lo puede. Los que viven sujetos a la carne no pueden agradar a Dios. Pero nosotros no estamos sujetos a la carne, sino al espritu, ya que el Espritu de Dios habita en nosotros. El que no tiene el Espritu de Cristo no es de Cristo. Pues bien, si Cristo est en nosotros, el cuerpo est muerto por el pecado, pero el espritu vive por la justificacin obtenida. Si el Espri-tu del que resucit a Jess de entre los muertos habita en nosotros, el que resucit de entre los muertos a Cristo Jess vivificar tambin nuestros cuerpos mortales, por el mismo Espritu que habita en nosotros.

Fostering Faith Certification Courses
Archdiocesan catechists certification currently consists of 5 courses, 10 hours each. Courses are offered at parish sites throughout the Archdiocese. Pick up a copy of the Fostering Faith Catechist Certification Program scheduled at the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry display table. For more information on Fostering Faith Catechist Certification, go to our website at www.catechesis-chicago.org This program is offered in English, Spanish, and Polish. The annual Certification Ceremony takes place next year Wednesday, June 25, 2014. Location and time will be announced at a later date.

Certified Catechetical Leader Gathering

This all day session for professional development is scheduled for Spring 2014. Topic and presenter are tentative at this time and will be announced by invitation to the certified leaders.

Retreat for Hispanic Catechetical Leaders

This annual meeting will take place June 28 29 2014. Information about this event will be available in the early spring and posted on the Hispanic web page www.catechesischicago.org/es/en-us/inicio

Youth Ministers Gathering

Youth ministers and other catechetical leaders working with youth will want to be a part of this annual day. Details and a theme will be announced later this year. Catechetical and Youth Ministry Leadership Formation

OFCYM offers a training program for new catechetical leaders called Catechetical and Youth Ministry Leadership Formation. This four module program covers topics that those who are taking on this role in a parish should know. Please call Juan Castillo at 312-534-8045.

Scripture School Special Events

The Chicago Catholic Scripture School (CCSS) offers in-depth study of the Bible for any adult who wants an understanding of Scripture in the Catholic tradition for personal enrichment, ministry, faith development, family life, and community life. Deacons, directors of religious education, catechists, pastoral associates, youth ministers, Bible study leaders, and any adult wishing to meet the Lord in a deeper way through Scripture may all benefit from the program. Certificate of Studies in Catechetical Leadership (in Spanish and English)

El Certificado de Estudios en Liderazgo Catequtico es un programa arquidicesano patrocinado por la Oficina para la Catequesis y el Ministerio Juvenil en conjunto con el Instituto de Liderazgo Pastoral de la University of St. Mary of the Lake (USML). Est diseado para capacitar a los Coordinadores de Educacin Religiosa Parroquial (CER) y a los Coordinadores del Ministerio Juvenil (CMJ) en las parroquias de la Arquidicesis con el contenido y habilidades teolgicas, catequticas y ministeriales necesarios para realizar un ministerio efectivo. The Certificate of Studies in Catechetical Leadership is a joint Archdiocesan program sponsored by the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry, the Department of Catholic Schools, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/ Mundelein Seminar (USML). It is designed to provide parish and Catholic School Coordinators of Religious Education/ Catechesis and Coordinators of Youth Ministry with the theological, catechetical, and ministerial content and skills for effective ministry in the parishes and Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the Archdiocese.

Advent Catechist Retreat 2013

The annual Advent retreat for catechists is an opportunity to take a day and reflect on your lived faith in a meaningful way with others. It is open to all and is scheduled December 14, 2014 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Maryville in Des Plaines. This years theme is Deepening Our Witness to Jesus Christ and it is being offered in English, Spanish and Polish.

Theological Intensive
To help our certified catechetical leaders with their ongoing formation and to provide a channel for those pursuing certification to gain required competencies, OFCYM offers a two-day seminar to be held May 30 and 31 2014. The location is to be announced.
