ith impressive aesthetic and environmental benefits, and an efficient construction method, the Department of Transport and Main Roads chose to incorporate a Humes precast Classic arch into the Wacol to Darra section of the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade. The 15-metre arch spans Bullockhead Creek, a tributary of the Brisbane River, and an important wildlife corridor in the area. The Wacol area is home to a large population of eastern grey kangaroos, so the design solution needed to allow local wildlife easy and safe movement within the motorway precinct. The arch also accommodates a two-lane road connecting the Centenary Highway with the Ipswich Motorway, a pedestrian and bicycle path underneath, and provides access to a local road. A number of solutions were considered before the Classic arch was chosen. With a faster construction process than traditional bridge and culvert solutions, the Classic arch design met the projects tight time frames, and could also be customised to suit the sites exact clearance envelope requirements. Twenty-eight arches were installed on an insitu concrete strip foundation. Six wing walls and two spandrel walls were used at either end of the arch to retain backfill, direct water flow and enhance the appearance of the arch. The 50-metre-long bridge took approximately one week to construct. TMRSC centreline
Humes arches are manufactured to provide a choice of geometric envelopes to meet access and waterway requirements. Unique arch profiles can be created from within the standard portfolio, and customers have a choice of architectural finishes, ensuring that the end result is in harmony with its natural surroundings. All standard arches are designed to comply with AS 5100 Bridge Design. The Humes business has a long history of engineering precast and prestressed concrete solutions, and, after 100 years of manufacture, our product range has never been more diverse, more competitive, or more in-tune with our clients needs than it is today. Humes offers a range of solutions for bridges and platforms, road and rail infrastructure, tunnels and shafts, retaining walls, pipeline systems, water treatment, re-use and detention, and traffic management. We can customise our solutions to ensure that they create maximum value for each project, accommodating site conditions, design requirements and construction factors. Our ability to deliver to client specifications on major projects across Australia has established Humes as a valuable and reliable partner. Humes is a division of Holcim, one of the worlds leading suppliers of cement and aggregates. Today, Humes employs more than 640 people, and is the largest civil precast concrete manufacturer in Australia.

Warwick whispers
ne of the most unique, enjoyable and famous elements of the Warwick office is the Social Club but its future may be in doubt due to declining numbers. Over the past few years, a dedicated handful of staff have tirelessly organised the events many Warwick employees have enjoyed. We warmly encourage staff to get involved and support the Social Club simply by assisting with events, suggesting ideas, attending events or becoming members to ensure its long-term future.

passed the baton to this years winner Trevor Sendall to keep it in the Trevors. As a result, many have decided to forget the expensive fishing gear and quit perfecting their fishing technique, as a trip to the registrar for a name change may be the key to fishing success. Runner-up Mike Skip Holeszko also kept the Warwick staff in close contention for a win, narrowly missing out on first place with a haul of six fish at a combined weight of 12.1 kilograms. In March, we also held our family-friendly Easter barbecue complete with an Easter egg hunt for the kids.
Why should you join? Check out the fun weve already had in 2013. Easing into the year, we held our traditional monthly barbecues in January, February and March. During March, the Toowoomba and Warwick Social Clubs also joined forces to stage the third annual Leslie Dam Fishing Competition, with the Warwick Social Club ensuring that all participants were adequately nourished after a big day with a barbecue dinner. In a Darling Downs first, this years competition was cut back to a one-day competition, and the decision proved to be a winner, with over 50 people registering. Mother Nature even scheduled the event in her calendar, swapping wet conditions for picture-perfect weather. Participants hauled in 34 fish, which in total weighed over 55 kilograms! As per tradition, Overall Fisherperson was, as with every year to date, won by a Trevor. Last years winner, Trevor Martin,

he annual TMRSC Easter Fun Day was held on one of the few rain-free days so far in 2013. A large crowd of people, including 40 kids, gathered on Saturday 16 March in Gregory Terrace Park to enjoy the days activities. The First Gentleman (married to the Clubs Madame President) cooked a scrumptious sausage sizzle, once again including his special caramelised onions, which was a real treat. The barbecue fare was washed down with a selection of cold drinks. There were definitely some mini Van Goghs among the painters of the ceramic eggs and bunnies and in the colouring competition. It was a very hard decision for the judges to choose the top three in each class. The winners of the colouring competition are pictured. The Fairy Face Painter produced some amazing faces and spread her special fairy dust around.

his history describes the birth of the Transport and Main Roads Social Club in 1936 and its development through the years to its current form.
Weve broken the story up into two instalments. This first part is about the formation of the Club and the major social events over the years. The second part will tell the sporting side of the story. Social and sporting activities began in the Main Roads Board in 1925, when the Board was no bigger than a small district office. The first two activities were a ball, and a cricket team entered in the Warehouse Association competition. The Board grew along with the importance and usage of roads in those early days of road transport and car ownership. It became the Main Roads Commission in 1930. It was housed in an old building in Turbot Street, where the Suncorp building now stands, plus some smaller offices in the inner city area. By that time, the Commission had a large staff, many of whom were interested in social activities, sports, drama performance, reading and food. All these activities were controlled by separate committees. The sporting activities (mainly cricket, bowls and a car club) were not included on the social calendar and were self-funded. A small, passionate group maintained a staff reading library, funded by a lending fee for books and a small joining fee. Another group of volunteers operated a soup and sandwich bar, the proceeds of which were given to the committee that ran social functions like the Childrens Christmas Tree. Eventually, the seed was sown to amalgamate all activities under one control, and in 1936, the Main Roads Commission Social Club was formed. It controlled the social and sporting events, while the staff library remained a separate entity. The fortnightly fee for members of the Social Club was sixpence (five cents), and this amount remained the same until the early 1970s. The birth of the Social Club led to the introduction of interstate sports between Queenslands MRD and the New South Wales Department of Main Roads. Cricket
was first in 1949, and over a 30-year period, we added lawn bowls, netball, tennis, golf, squash and volleyball. Rugby league was also played between the two departments at a different time of the year.
Spring Hill
In 1967, when the department moved to its new headquarters at Spring Hill, the Social Club entered a new era 1400 staff from eight separate buildings were now all housed together in the one building, with two district offices just across the road at Dickens Street. Senior management especially the Departments Assistant Secretary, Stan Rawlings saw the need to build espirit de corps, and they supported the concept of a social club. This led to the formalisation of the Club with a constitution (written by Noel Cummings) and an elected committee. At Spring Hill, we were no longer handy to the shops in the city, and this presented a couple of problems. The first was the lack of takeaway food shops there was just one small milk bar nearby (which is still there, in the Vitale building opposite Landmark Place). So the Department installed a cafeteria on the ninth floor of the building. This provided meeting places for staff and had space for recreational activities. The Social Club paid for amenities such as table tennis, darts, indoor bowls and cards for use in this area and on selected floors of the building. A second problem created by the move to Spring Hill was that officers were spending time and tying up the telephones to shop for good deals. (Staff did not get individual phones until the early 80s, so an office had one or two phones shared by 10 or more people.) So the Social Club created discount purchasing to assist the staff with group buying power and free up the phones. Discount purchasing was provided for three hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Today, the Union Shopper and other discount facilities have overtaken this service, while the TMRSC Inc. has moved into other equally vital services for its members.

Santa bought his toys from a wholesaler called Tim the Toyman, whose expert staff assisted with choices to suit each age group, and then wrapped them for Santa. Presents were allocated and labelled by age and gender (for example, 4G meant suitable for a four-year-old girl) up to the age of 10. Attendance was probably at its peak in those years. Over 300 children filled the playground with their screams and laughter, and it was a mammoth task to arrange all the parts of the day and send the kids home tired but happy. In the early 1980s, Phil Brown got a baptism of fire when his first time saw days of rain in the lead-up, and he had to make the call to relocate into B3 of SHOC on the Saturday so we could arrange access into the building and get a call-out on the radio. Then, of course, Sunday was fine and hot and how smelly was the car park when the sun hit what the ponies left behind! Luckily, the kids still had fun, and, in fact, many of them especially liked seeing where Mum or Dad worked! Over the following years, we brought in some new approaches, such as games run by the Life Be In It organisation, who used student teachers and saved us money over the hired rides. We began allowing members without children of their own to bring grandchildren, nieces and nephews. We built a team of helpers and the Department was supportive enough to let us borrow a small delivery van for the weekend for Santa to use as his sleigh! We also switched the venue to public parks, first Albert Park behind the stage (where the hill provided a great waterslide) and then New Farm Park, where Santa arrived by boat! Later on, we were able to use the Cricket Clubs newly acquired Rasey Park. This venue was semi-private and gave us a bar facility and a barbecue that allowed the Club to provide a sausage sizzle for the first time. After the Cricket Club gave up its lease of Rasey Park, we held a couple of Christmas Trees at the Australian Woolshed at Ferny Grove, where the baby animals and small waterslide were popular. Then, for a few years, the Club used indoor play centres, switching between Northlakes and Kingston to give people on both sides of town a turn at a long drive. These had the benefit of airconditioning and shelter from summer sun and storms, but they cost us entry fees and we lost the sole use advantage.
Most recently, weve held the Tree at outdoor swim centres. The Plantation near Capalaba was good, but suffered a lack of shade and lots of bindies. The last two events have been at the Chermside Water Park. Santa now brings presents and lollies to children up to the age of 12, and all attendees enjoy a sausage sizzle expertly prepared by the committee, while the kids enjoy the great range of water slides and pools offered by the venue.
In the 1980s, we held a few parties at Wests Leagues Club at Bardon, where a highlight of the evening was often a mass surf boat dance to the theme from Hawaii Five-0. More recently, weve stopped having the big party event and instead turned the December Happy Hour into a special event with extra features.
Fortitude Valley
After 46 years in Spring Hill we now have a new headquarters. You will find us on the Ground Floor of Transport House, 230 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley.
This history is incomplete and is probably wrong in places. Our Club has a long history involving many, many people. This history was compiled by a handful of those people, none of whom were around in the early days. We invite any additions or corrections to any of the stories written here. Photos are especially welcome.
Christmas Party
The Christmas Party was really just a Christmas Tree for grown-ups though often without the corresponding maturity! Everyone likes to party at the end of the year and it was a very popular event with attendance in the hundreds. For many years, the Social Club held its Christmas Party in the B3 car park of the Spring Hill building. Compared to the Ball, it was a little more casual, less dressy, and the industrial feel of B3 made it a much more raucous celebration.
