What can be the qualifications of a crane operator? Is it mandatory for him to have a heavy vehicle licence?If yes than under what rule.Your feed back will be much appreciated Dear Jitender, As per MV Act Heavy Motor Vehicle License is issued to drive heavy vehicles like trucks, buses, tourist coaches, cranes, goods carriages, etc. Note that the above license is for motor vehicles which include mobile cranes. Not for tower cranes which is a fixed one. Your tower crane operator requires training and competency test certification from the crane manufacturer or supplier and not a license from MV Department. For tower crane which fixed at one place of construction operator dont need a license. If you are using mobile cranes and it moves on public places/roads the operator of those

mobile cranes require licenses. Though the mobiles cranes are used only in private places it is recommended to have licensed operators from safety point of view and not on the basis of statutes. Licensing credentials are issued by the state and require applicants to complete a written and practical exam demonstrating their ability to operate a crane safely. Now, three batches have passed out from the academy here. The institute is also providing training to around 45 crane operators from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), including classroom training and onsite training.

Chandrakant P Sanghvi, chairman and managing director, Sanghvi Movers Ltd said that the lack of skilled operators in the niche segment was the reason for the company to start an institute. "The academy imparts training for a certified course in crane operation and crane safety. The course duration is three months and 45 students have passed out from the academy. The course involves a mix of classroom and practical training. Most of the students who pass out successfully are given a stipend for three months and then are absorbed by the company as employees," he said. He said that to impart knowledge on all facets of crane operation and safety the instructors were sent to USA to gain professional knowledge on new generation cranes. "ONGC had approached us to provide professional training to the crane operators and 44 of their employees are pursing training now," he said. Elaborating on the course, Sham Kajale, executive director and CFO, Sanghvi Movers Ltd said for the regular course the fee is Rs 35,000. The course includes three months classroom training and one-and-half months onsite training. The minimum qualification is 12 th , ITI or diploma in mechanical engineering. We will start the fourth batch soon," said Kajale. "For ONGC employees seven days onsite training in ONGC oil rags is given to accustom with the working condition and doesn't come under the the academy is exploring the possibility of tie-ups with overseas institutions," he added. Sanghvi Movers Ltd that has a fleet of 350 cranes with the capacity ranging from 80 tons to 800 tons and plans to add another 60 cranes in the next two years with an investment of Rs 350 crore. "We see an immense potential in the power segment with government and private sector players investing hugely in the power sector. Now, 41 per cent business comes from this segment and we hope it will touch 50 per cent in the coming year," said Sanghvi. Last year the company bought 49 new cranes with 80-750 ton capacity from Japan, Germany and US with a total investment of Rs 236 crore. This financial year, it plans to invest Rs 160 crore to buy 19 cranes with 100-750 ton capacity from overseas. The company is also planning to scale up its depot from its present 10 to 16 by next year with each depot spread across a minimum of 3 acres. In the power segment the company has major clients like Lanco, BHEL, Reliance Energy, NTPC and SEEPCO among others.

According to the company, other sectors in which the demand for cranes is higher includes wind power, steel, refinery and infrastructure.
