Mineral Identification Report

and so on. 1. State the problem (the objective in the form of a question). 2. Gather information. 3. Form a hypothesis. 4. Experiment! 5. Record and analyze data. 6. Form a conclusion. 7. Communicate results.

Lepolidite

Do you think the steps below of the scientific method must be followed in order? Yes, because the steps help each other meaning that the 1st step will help solve the 2nd step and the 2nd step will help the 3rd step

Now that you are done researching and identifying your mineral fill-in the information for each step of the scientific method below. Then, number which step was first, second, etc. Objective: Use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. Materials: Streak Plate Computer The Internet Other Rocks for the Hardness Test 1. Mineral Testing Lab 2. Observations 3. Research 4. Hypothesis Our books 5. 6. 7. 8. Put all the data on our data sheet Answer all the questions we have had We got hints Then we found out the answer from Mr. Finan

Procedure:

1. State the problem. (Hint: Just write the objective above in the form of a question.) How can I use the scientific method to use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral? 2. Gather information. (Look it up and/or ask an expert) *See the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 3. Form a hypothesis. Write a statement that tells what mineral you think yours is (your two guesses). I think that my mineral is either Lepolidite or Lepidocrocite

4. Start the experiment! (Follow the procedure.) 5. Record and analyze data. *See the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 6. Form a conclusion. This must be a paragraph that includes:
An answer to the problem (question 1). How your hypothesis compares with the actual results. (Was your hypothesis correct? If not, how close were you?) A description of your mineral and what helped you find the identification of your mineral the most. I used the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. First, I received my mineral from Mr. Finan. Next, I did a streak, hardness, luster, density, special properties, and color test on my mineral. Then I made some observations about my mineral. Next, I did some research on my mineral. Finally, I made a hypothesis and recorded all of my information on a data-collecting sheet. After running these tests, I made a hypothesis. My hypothesis was that my mineral was Lepolidite, and I was right. My mineral was purple, gray, and white. The cleavage was perfect, and the fracture was uneven. The hardness was three Calcite, and the streak was white. My mineral felt rocky, but it had one side of it that was not as bumpy as the rest. The thing that helped me the most was the A-Z listings of minerals that Mr. Finan provided. I liked this website because I could research about Lepolidite. Another website that helped me was Minerals.net. You could fill in the blanks where you would type in the hardness, luster, color and all of the other properties. It would also come up with all of the minerals that qualified to be your mineral. I really enjoyed doing this project, and I would do it again anytime!

7. Communicate your results. Post this report and your Data Sheet where people can see it !
