PNTA is a strong supporter of the theater arts industry and education. Towards that end, the company offers a scholarship to two students annually in the amount of $1,000 each. The scholarship is intended for high school students graduating at the end of the 2013-14 school year who plan to pursue a career in technical theatre and/or related fields in the performing arts. Deadline to Apply: December 31, 2013 Scholarship Rules for Eligibility & Disbursement Open to high school students graduating at the end of the 2013-14 school year who plan to enroll in a post-secondary degree-based program with the intention of studying technical theatre and/or a related performing arts field. For winning applicants, $500 of the scholarship will be paid out the first semester/quarter. The balance will be paid out the second semester/quarter. Prior to each payment, the scholarship winner must present proof of enrollment for the current term. A delay of up to one year between completing high school and starting postsecondary education is acceptable. PNTA employees and their family members are ineligible. Submitting Your Application: You must submit your application to patronproject@pnta.com unless other arrangements have been made prior to the submission deadline. The Patron Project 2013/14 Scholarship Application SECTION 4 PROJECT DESCRIPTION Welcome to PNTAs Patron Project Scholarship application process. We are excited that you have decided to take up this opportunity and run with it. At PNTA, we employ many people who have been involved with technical theatre for years. One of our passions is the art of technical theatre and what it brings to people. Theatre is about captivating an audience and transporting them into a new world. Technical theatre, at its best, is seamless and rarely puts an effect or element in solely for the purpose of wowing an audience (though, we certainly aim to do that through our craft). Sometimes the technical production is an accumulation of amazing effects remembered for years. Conversely, technical theatre can also be successful while going unnoticed, subtly immersing the audience into the world of the story. One of our favorite parts of working in technical theatre is the process of collaborating with so many amazing problem solvers to create the world of the production. While it is not unusual to use age old conventions that have worked for centuries, sometimes we instead create a new language or convention that we ask an audience to buy into. In all cases, our works must serve the production, the audience, the process and the story. In this challenge, we want you to engage people and resources in the creative process. You lead the charge, but enjoy the collaboration as you go. The Project: We want you to choose a story (it can be a script, musical, piece of literature or even a childrens story) and an audience (think about age, demographic, interests). We would like you to develop a technical element that would enhance the story you are telling. (Think props, sound, lights, video, set, makeup, costumes, set dressing.) Present the process you go through to choose, define, develop and execute the technical element you choose. Present that process to us in a way that complements your artistic style. (You could present through sketches, film, photos, writing, model building or some other method that you believe tells YOUR story best.) Finally, reflect back on the process you went through and let us know how you thought you succeeded and, in retrospect, what you would change to make it even better. Your presentation for submission must be no longer than 15 minutes. Our goal in this challenge is to have you engage in the creative process that we go through as theatre professionals and document that journey for us. We are far more interested in your design process than your end result.

EVALUATION: The panel of evaluators will base their decision against these criteria: 1. How well you present the process from choosing a project to the evaluation of the projects design process and each step in between. (15 points) 2. Does the devised solution enhance the story being told to the defined audience? (15 points) 3. How well do you demonstrate creative problem solving? (20 points) 4. Do you engage with other resources to develop an original solution? (20 points) 5. Is the solution suited to both the chosen script and the audience identified? (10 points) 6. How creative and effective is your presentation to the evaluators? (15 points) 7. Staying within the 15 minute maximum time for the final presentation (5 points; projects that run over will not be considered)
