Mineral Identification Report

the experiment. 1. State the problem (the objective in the form of a question). 2. Gather information. 3. Form a hypothesis. 4. Experiment! 5. Record and analyze data. 6. Form a conclusion. 7. Communicate results.

PyriteFluffyness

Do you think the steps below of the scientific method must be followed in order? Yes, because if not, you will be making something without gathering information; or you could form a conclusion without doing

Now that you are done researching and identifying your mineral fill-in the information for each step of the scientific method below. Then, number which step was first, second, etc. Objective:

Materials:

-Computer -Internet -Mineral -Book 1. Mr. Finan let us pick our mineral. 2. Scratch Test 3. Hardness Test 4. Streak Test

-Scratch Plate 5. Luster Test 6. Found Information 7. Got Tested about Mineral 8. Got to (KEEP) Mineral

Procedure:

1. State the problem. (Hint: Just write the objective above in the form of a question.) How can I use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral? 2. Gather information. (Look it up and/or ask an expert) *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 3. Form a hypothesis. Write a statement that tells what mineral you think yours is (your two guesses). Pyrite and Something that has NOTHING TO DO with it, because I couldnt find anything else. It is pyrite because it is the only one that looks the same and has the same facts.

4. Start the experiment! (Follow the procedure.) 5. Record and analyze data. *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 6. Form a conclusion. This must be a paragraph that includes:
An answer to the problem (question 1). How your hypothesis compares with the actual results. (Was your hypothesis correct? If not, how close were you?) A description of your mineral and what helped you find the identification of your mineral the most.

In science class, I used the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. First, we did some tests to see the information about the mineral. Then, we tried some tests to see what it is. They are the hardness test, streak test, and luster test. Later, I realized they really helped me find out what my mineral really is. Then, I made my hypothesis. I guessed pyrite. Luckily, I was correct. If you are wondering, my mineral is gold looking with a hint of green color. In addition, it has a number seven in the hardness scale and has a black streak, which is interesting because it was gold looking. In addition, the mineral is shiny and rough, which means its fracture (that means it is not smooth) and is small. Then, I used a chart that shows multiple kinds of minerals sorted by its color. Finally, what helped me the most to find out what my mystery mineral is, was the color.
