THE2014CHANCELLORSDISCOVERYPROGRAMRESEARCHFUND REQUESTFORPROPOSALS Readyfordistribution:October23,2013 ApplicationDeadline:11:59p.m.ET,December4,2013 TheChancellorsDiscoveryProgram,developedbytheChancellorsScienceAdvisoryCounciland approvedforfundingbyChancellorVictorDzau,isintendedtofuelnewopportunitiesforinnovative researchprojectsatDukeMedicinethatcanleadtolongtermexternallyfundedresearchsupport. Approachingitssecondyearofoperation,theDiscoveryProgramwillfundfiveoneyearawardsof $75,000in2014toinitiatesupportforexcitingnewresearchprojectsledbyregularrankfaculty members,attherankofAssistantProfessororhigher,withprimaryappointmentsinbasicandclinical departmentsoftheDukeSchoolsofMedicineandNursing.Everyapplicantisrequiredtoprovideclear documentationthattheprojectrepresentsanew,unfundedlineofinvestigation;lackofsuch documentationwillresultintriage.Inaddition,everysubmissionmustconveytheinnovativenature andlikelyimpactoftheprojectandclearlyexplainhowthisleveloffundingwillbeusedtosupportthe subsequentapplicationformajorresearchfunding;innovationmayinvolvetheproposedscience and/orgenerationofuniquecollaborations. TheProgrampermitscompetitionbetweennewandrenewalapplications(seebelowforinstructions). TERMSOFTHEAWARDS Eachawardwillconsistof$75,000foroneyear,withanexpectedstartdateofFebruary15,2014.A reportsummarizingfinancialexpendituresandaonepagesummaryoftheoutcomeoftheprojectis requiredatthecloseofthefundingyear(tobesubmittedtotheCouncilnolaterthanApril1,2015). Previousrecipientsmayapplyforrenewalforanadditionalyearoffunding(incompetitionwithnew applicationsandwiththesamedeadlineofDec.4).Whenrequested,allawardeeswillbeexpectedto provideupdatesofpublicationsandlongtermgrantsupportthatoriginatedfromtheaward. CRITERIA Proposalswillbejudgedbythefollowingcriteria: Innovation,whichmayinvolvetheproposedscienceand/orthegenerationofunique collaborations Strongscientificmerit,feasibilityandpotentialforleadingtolongtermexternalfunding Lackofoverlapwithexistingfundingapplicationswillbetriagedifitisnotclearthatthey representanovelresearchavenueforthefacultymember(s).Facultywithstartupor discretionaryfundsmustprovideajustificationastowhythosefundscannotbeusedforthe proposedproject. RESTRICTIONS Awardedfundsmustbeusedtoconducttheprojectproposed.DiscoveryFundscanbeusedto purchasereagentsormaterialsortopayforthetime/effortofapersonconductingworkaspartofthe project,orotherexpensesdirectlyincurredasapartoftheproposedproject. 1

InclusionofInvestigatorsOutsideDukesSchoolsofMedicineandNursing TheintentoftheChancellorsDiscoveryAwardProgramistofosternewlinesofinvestigationby SchoolofMedicineandSchoolofNursingfaculty.Whileproposalsmayincludecoinvestigatorsfrom and/oractivitiesoccurringoutsidetheseschoolsoroutsideofDuke,thebulkoftheproposedactivities andexpendituresshouldoccurwithintheseschools.SalarysupporttoinvestigatorsoutsideofDukeis notallowed;salarysupporttoinvestigatorswhoseprimaryappointmentisatDukebutoutsidethe SchoolsofMedicineandNursingwillbeconsideredwithappropriatejustification.Allproposalsthat includeinvestigatorsfromand/orworkperformedoutsidetheDukeSchoolsofMedicineandNursing mustprovide(1)abudgetusingtheNIHPHS398formpage4(anonmodularbudget;URLprovided below),and(2)athoroughbudgetjustificationforeachbudgetedcategory. CollaborativeProposals Allapplications,includingcollaborativeproposals,mustidentifyonlyasingleprojectleader/principal investigator(PI);multiplePIproposalsarenotallowed.Notethatproposalsincludinginvestigators andexpendituresoutsidetheSchoolsofMedicineandNursingmustincludeabudgetandbudget justification.SalarysupporttoinvestigatorsoutsideofDukeisnotallowed;salarysupportto investigatorswhoseprimaryappointmentisatDukebutoutsidetheSchoolsofMedicineandNursing willbeconsidered.Rememberthatthebulkoftheactivitiesandexpendituresshouldoccurwithinthe DukeSchoolsofMedicineandNursing. ELIGIBILITY OnlyfacultymembersattherankofAssistantProfessororhigheronanyregularranktrackwith primaryappointmentsinbasicorclinicaldepartmentsoftheDukeUniversitySchoolsofMedicineand NursingareeligibletosubmitaproposalandtobeidentifiedasPI.Eacheligiblefacultymemberis permittedtosubmitONLYONEapplicationasPI.CurrentmembersoftheScienceAdvisoryCouncil arenoteligible. SELECTIONPROCESS ApplicationswillbereviewedbytheScienceAdvisoryCouncil,whoserecommendationsforfunding willbeevaluatedbytheChancellorforHealthAffairs,whowillmakethefinaldecisions.Applications forprojectsthatareperceivedtooverlapcurrentlyorrecentlyfundedlinesofinvestigationwillbe triagedwithoutscientificreview.Giventhenumberofapplicationsexpected,applicationsthatfailto meettheformattingrequirements(below)arelikelytobetriagedwithoutscientificreview. APPLICATIONPROCEDURESFORCOMPETINGRENEWALS: Whenexcellentprogresshasbeenachievedinthefirstyearbutadditionalsupportisneededtobring theprojecttoacompetitivelevelforexternalfunding,applicationforonecompetingrenewalwillbe allowed(thesewillcompetewithnewapplicationsandarenotguaranteed). Competingrenewalapplicationsshouldincludethetitlepage,NIHbiosketch,andlistingof supportasdescribedabovefornewsubmissions.Notethatifotherfundingsupporthasbeen obtainedfortheproject,itwillbeineligibleforDiscoveryAwardrenewal. Thenarrativesectionoftherenewalapplicationislimitedtosixpagestotalincludingthe following:preliminarydataincludingtheprogressfromyearone(~3pages),summaryofplans ifcontinuedfundingisgranted(~2pages),andabriefsummaryoftheinnovativenatureofthe proposedresearchplusastatementsummarizingthePIsplantoobtainexternalfunding(~1 page).Asabove,tables,figuresandimagesareincludedinthe6pagelimit;referencesarenot. RenewalapplicationsmustalsoprovideonepageplannedspecificaimsforanupcomingR01 (orequivalent)submission(onepage).ThispageshouldbetitledSpecificAimsPlanned Submissionandisnotcountedinthe6pagelimit.Thispageshouldbeformattedaccordingto therequirementsoftheintendedfundingagency/organization.
