Know Your Skin
By Lisa A. Manz-Dulac, MD
Te departure of warm weather
causes certain skin conditions to
fourish. One such condition is
keratosis pilaris, or KP.
Afecting mostly teenagers
and young adults, KP is a very
common and harmless condition.
KP presents as small bumps that
have a dry sandpaper feeling.
Tey can be red or brownish in
color. Upper arms, cheeks and
thighs are the most frequent
sites for the condition. While the
condition may also be present in
babies and persist into adult life,
keratosis pilaris is uncommon in
elderly people.
Keratosis pilaris is caused by
tiny skin plugs which block hair
openings, forming a horny plug
of the hair follicle. Tis also
widens the pores making them
appear more obvious.
Keratosis pilaris tends to be
more severe and can sometimes
itch during the winter months
or other times of low humidity
when skin dries out. However, it
can persist throughout the year.
KP is not curable and
treatment of KP is not necessary.
Moisturizers may help with
the dryness and associated itch.
Topical prescription creams
may also be recommended by
your dermatologist. Exfoliation
with an exfoliating cloth or
Clarisonic body brush may also
help minimize the appearance
of the bumps. While KP can be
efectively treated, therapy must
be continued on a regular basis or
the KP recurs.
To learn more about
Keratosis Pilaris, contact your
dermatologist or call us at

A. Manz-Dulac and Associates.

Phones swiped
Police are looking for
the person or persons re-
sponsible for throwing a
cinder block through the
glass front door of the
T-Mobile store on 9 Mile
and stealing 3 iPhones
Saturday, Oct. 20, at about
4:10 a.m.
Upon investigating the
burglary, police found
shattered glass both in-
side and outside the door.
Once inside, muddy foot-
prints were spotted near
the Apple iPhone display
case, the arm that holds
the phones was broken
and the phones missing.
A chunk of cinder
block, of which police
suspect was used to break
the front door, was on top
of the display case.
The store manager was
contacted and she noted
the cash registers and
some cabinets had been
rummaged but nothing
was missing other than
the three phones.
Surveillance cameras
were on the property and
copies of which are being
sent to the police depart-
ment for review.
Nature calls
A 29-year-old Roseville
woman imprisoned at the
St. Clair Shores Police
Department made a run
for it after completing a
visit to the restroom.
The woman, held on a
warrant from 40th
District Court on a third
degree home invasion
charge, requested a more
private area to address
personal needs and broke
away from a police officer
escorting her back to her
cell. The woman headed
out the west entry door of
the police department
and into the parking lot.
The officer gave chase,
assisted by a sergeant and
another officer working at
the front desk.
The woman headed
southbound into an area
off the parking lot sur-
rounded by a privacy
fence. As she began to
climb it, one officer
grabbed her around the
waist and another
grabbed her leg and wres-
tled her to the ground.
The woman tucked her
arms underneath her to
avoid being handcuffed.
One officer hit her in
the back of her arm with
a closed fist once or
twice and the woman re-
lented. She was hand-
cuffed and returned to
her cell.
Tire thieves
A 23- year- ol d
Southfield man was
pushed out of the get-
away car after he and
three other black males
attempted to steal the
tires off a Cadillac CTS in
the Don Gooley lot on 9
Mile.
A security guard con-
tacted police a 8:13 p.m.
Saturday Oct. 20, report-
ing four men were at-
tempting to steal the
tires. The men, wearing
ski masks and gloves,
tried to escape under a
chain link fence later dis-
covered to have been de-
tached from a post, al-
lowing the suspects to ex-
it to a silver Chrysler mini
van.
As the vehicle headed
northbound through the
parking lot, the
Southfield man was
ejected from the mini
van, which continued
west on Nine Mile.
The Southfield man
ran across 9 Mile toward
the Bow Wow Dog
Resort. An officer giving
chase on foot found a
black ski mask in the
Dumpster behind the
business.
Shortly thereafter, an
employee at the Mobil gas
station at the corner of 9
Mile and I-94 called police
to report a man meeting
the suspects description
and sweating profusely,
saying he was jacked,
asking for directions to
Detroit.
The man was later
found and arrested while
walking along the I-94
shoulder near Shady
Lane.
Officers on the scene at
the car dealership found
lug nuts and cement
blocks on which the vehi-
cle was raised. A car jack
was also found.
A surveillance tape of
the dealership is being
handed over to police.
Police are seeking in-
formation on the three
other suspects.

I have a photograph al-

ered in the spring by
Olivers oldest sister,
Evelyn. The photos, now a
faded sepia, were glued in
place and taken between
1900 and 1910, he said.
They (the photos) were
fascinating. Although
mom could be recognized
in many, to find out who
else was in them and when
and where they were tak-
en, required lifting them
carefully from the pages
with the hope that some
clues could be found on
the back." Although none
were found, it could be
seen that of the 70, 26 cen-
tered around his mother
and her friends.
Voss is not alone in seek-
ing information. For years,
families have taken photos
and dropped them into
boxes, secured some in al-
bums and others were
framed sans dates, names
and places.
The photos fade and
those who have informa-
tion about the photos for-
get or die.
To preserve those mem-
ories for another genera-
tion, Grosse Pointe pho-
tographer John A. Martin
provides advice. He said
when cataloguing photos,
never write on the back or
on the CD or DVD con-
taining photos. The ink
can break down, leak onto
the photo and or fade.
Using an indelible pen on
a CD can destroy the data,
Martin said. Also, dont
use a sticky note because
the glue can destroy the in-
formation either on a pho-
to or CD. Instead, he ad-
vised, write on the CDs
case and store the infor-
mation a second time on a
hard drive.
For photos, the best
thing to do is write the
name on a paper with a
pen. Frame the photo with
the paper behind it, he
said.
Martin went on to say,
people should emulate an
archivist and think about
where pictures are stored.
All boxed photographs
should be stored in a dark,
cool and dry place.
If its real humid and
photos are stacked up, the
humidity will affect the
emulsion and will destroy
the photos, he said.
Rather than storing pho-
tos in the attic, place them
in a room with a tempera-
ture of 65 to 70 degrees
By Ann Foughty
Special Writer
Former Grosse
Pointe resident
Bill Oliver
needs help
identifying
people in pho-
tos that include
his mother,
Felicitas Voss.
The photos are
from about
1910, he said,
and probably
taken at the
Academy of the
Sacred Heart.
At top, Voss is
on the lower
left.

with 50 percent humidity.
Martin urges using a de-
humidifier for preserva-
tion purposes.
There are things a pro-
fessional is able to do to re-
store the not-too-faded im-
ages, but, once the photos
images have faded beyond
recognition, there is no
way to bring them back,
he said.
The photographic pro-
cess, from the camera to
paper, has improved tre-
mendously since the late
18th century when pho-
tography began, though
the general principle re-
mains the same, he contin-
ued. Treating the photos,
whether on paper or digi-
tal, should be done with
thought.
Keeping photos out of
direct sunlight and using
high quality glass in front
of framed photos is a way
to preserve memories.
Protecting it does cost
more with the UV protec-
tion built in (the glass), he
said.
The best way to pre-
serve images is to create a
CD, store it on a hard drive
and have a backup, just as
a precaution because, he
said, everything has the
potential to loose data.
So it is with Oliver. He
has the images but little
written data for his mother
who was born in 1891 in
Cincinnati. In 1905, her fa-
ther moved the family to
Detroit to build a small
factory and 20 houses for
his employees in Delray at
the intersection of Voss
Street and West Jefferson.
Growing up, the Vosss
playmates were the Stroh
and Ford children.
