This is combination resort complex and Trout sanctuary. The choice of accommodation is varied, with around 113 power sites and numerous tent sites. In the lodge there is a full kitchen, plus bathroom facilities which are available for the campers use. The lounge has a TV and an open fire. The camping area is on two landscaped terraces; some sites have fences and trees. On the upper level there is a kitchen/dining with a stove, microwave and plenty of refrigeration. Your freshly caught trout, or salmon can be stored in a coolroom. To serve the campsites there are two blocks of ablutions and a shub/bath in the ladies. The laundry has automatic equipment and dryer. There is a dump point. Outdoor activities include the use of free canoes, and golf clubs may be hired. Fishing, tramping, jet boating, golf, tennis and bowls are nearby. Joan and Chum Chamberlain are your friendly hosts. All camping is $14 per person. For a golden holiday or as a base to travel the Vanished World Trail, turn-off 200m east of the bridge over the Maerewhenua River on the eastern edge of Duntroon, and look for a signpost to Naseby and Danseys Pass. The camp is 14km further on, snuggled into a valley in the surrounding hills, along the banks of the river. The grounds are well groomed and neatly edged with pine trees. There is a grass tennis court, a basketball net and a playground. On a lower level are some gorgeous riverside sites. The kitchen is well equipped, with an adjacent dining hall. The excellent facilities are modern and clean, with huge shower cubicles. A carpeted and comfy TV room will be welcome on wet days; however when it is fine there is a choice of two swimming holes. An alternative is gold panning (almost at your tent site) or fly fishing, tramping, mountain biking, or fossil hunting. Power sites $18 and Tent sites $16 per person including free use of laundry equipment. Your friendly hosts are Scott and Margie Brown and family. There is a choice of lakes to discover in this central South Island location. Take the lovely drive west along the Waitaki River. The level, well-groomed grounds have plenty of shady trees and a lazy meandering stream. There are 94 power sites and 80 for tents. The main amenities are at one end of the extensive grounds. A special treat for motorhome travellers and families, there are many large power sites, each with an en-suite, picnic table, tap and TV aerial connections. The well kept grounds are level and have many attractive shelter trees scattered throughout. A little laundry building has automatic washer, dryer, ironing facilities and vacuum cleaner. Beside the original farm barn is a cosy kitchen with room to relax away from the working area. There are plenty of small appliances, including a microwave. All the facilities are well kept and clean. Across the road is Lake Benmore where there is boat access for campers use and plenty of shore fishing. Not far along the road you can visit the dams - Benmore, Aviemore and Waitaki. Travel south through Herbert for 3km turn west onto Breakneck Road. Only 1km further and you will find this basic but beautiful camp. The grounds are well groomed and the many camp sites, are on two levels amongst lovely stately trees. Just 5 power sites but easy to find your own secluded spot. The facilities are basic but clean and tidy with shower and toilets, washing machine and a cosy kitchen/dining with hotplates and fridge. A rose garden has been planted in the front of these facilities. A new shower/toilet block is available on the upper level. Scattered around the spacious grounds are woodfired BBQs. Plenty to do here - in the peace and quiet you can listen to the birds, kayak on the river which is safe swimming for the children or go on one of the many walking tracks. This camp is situated on the western side of SHwy 1, 3 kms south of Herbert and is a well established former scouting site. It is newly fenced and has a range of farm animals. Lots of room, just 4 powered sites. The campers kitchen has electric hobs, hot water, fridges and microwave but no dining or lounge area for campers. Ablutions are reminiscent of its prior use with rudimentary cubicles and a communal changing area, although bright new shower curtains and some paint liven things up. Shower taps are at a pre-set temperature. A spa and sauna are available for hire. The river is just past the border of trees and on the far bank is the main trunk line. There are swimming holes for the children, an adventure playground, and a dump site. Your hosts are Kim and Lyn Simpson. Tent sites $14 per person, power $30 for two.

On SHwy 1 turn-off at Maheno towards Kakanui. At the T junction turn right to Kakanui South and the camp is on your left. It has spacious well kept, sheltered grounds with new tree plantings. The ablutions are clean, tiled, unisex and disability friendly ($2 per shower). The kitchen area has gas hobs, fridge/freezer and a TV. Outside is a covered BBQ area. There are swings for the children and make sure you check out the weather station. A laundry is available with auto machines. Some power sites are available. Plenty of room here, park your small tent or your large bus. Entrance to the Penguin sanctuary is free; you can canoe on the river, or stroll to the beach from here. Just north of Moeraki at Hampden, this camp has plenty of tent sites and 25 power sites next to a riverside beach. In the busy season additional tent sites across the road are opened. The grounds are pleasant with some shady trees. The kitchen is fully equipped. Internet,fax and TV. A trampoline, outdoor games, bikes and kayak hire for your enjoyment. Nearby is a small childrens playground, tennis court and

This is a pretty camp 3km off SHwy 1, towards the coast. Fishing boats bobbing lazily in the bay, present a picture postcard view. There are a number of camping pockets, many overlooking the bay. Brand new toilets and showers have a disabled suite. The new state-of-the-art kitchen is a joy. There is a TV room available. Take time to inspect the Moeraki Boulders and the nearby seal colony, or visit the Penguin hospital. This may be the place to land that Salmon. There are 27 sites with power plus tent sites. A pretty domain ground with provision for camping. The toilets are basic and shower cubicles are available to hang your own solar shower in. The adjoining tennis courts and bowling green are appealing and a swimming hole is nearby. Camping is only $2 per person.

This is a lovely alpine park with campsites hidden in the Larches. There are 48 terraced power sites and innumerable tent sites. On the picturesque Otago Peninsula this parks location is half an hours drive from Dunedin City. Not a large complex, but one that has that personal touch.
