Jonathan Edwards
2 Corinthians 3 18 But we all with open face beholding as in a Glass the Glory of the Lord are Changed into the same Image from Glory to Glory. even as by the spirit of the Lord. The Apostle had said in the 6 verse by way of Commendation of his office that they were ministers of the New Testament not of the Letter but of the spirit for the Letter killeth but the spirit Giveth life. The Old testament dispensation was of the Letter. as meer Letters and sounds are Useless and Good for nothing any otherwise than as they Res Relate to Ideas or sen thoughts or the sense of the mind so the Old testament dispensation was unprofitable only as it Refer'd to the spirit of which the New testament was a ministra tion of. Now in the 17 verse the verse Immediately foregoing the text the apostle Referring to What he had said in the 6 verse. tells us the Lord is that spirit that is Jesus X is the spiritual scope and mean ing of the all the Legal dispensation. he was the spirit and soul of all those dark shadows and types and numerous Ceremonies that were then Commanded and Where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty. it marginal seems to Refer to 51. 12v that is the soul and substance of those things being he is no longer hid under ana types and shadows and a

he is no longer hid under ana types and shadows and a veil but we have liberty to see with Open face as in Our text and so are Changed into the same Image from Glory to Glory. but it i even as by the spirit of the Lord still the same spirit that had been spoken of before. The Words are so in the Original that they may be translated two ways Renderd either thus even by the Lord the spirit that is by the X that spirit that had been spoken of in the foregoing verse or as it is Render'd by the spirit of the Lord. but Let in whichway soever it be Renderd it Comes to the same thing for if it be Renderd that X the spirit doth it yet he doth it by the holy Ghost his spirit we Observed two doctrines from the verse ______________________________________________________ Doc I. That believers have such a sight of the Glory of X as Revealed in the Gospel as Changes 'em into a likeness to the same Glory. Doc II. That tis ye work of the spirit of X only to Give a true sight of X and to make like to X. we have already spoken to the former we shall now marginal by the help of God say something to the Latter Tis Evident by the words of the text that both these works are ascribed to the spirit of X. tis Evident it is __________________________________________________________ I tis the spirit of X that is the Immediate teacher and Instructor to Give a true sight of X. tis Evident this is Intended in the words of the text by the foregoing words. where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty that is tis the spirit that Gives Liberty to behold with Open face as it is explaind in the text. This spirit of X is the Only Immediate Instructor of the souls of men in spiritual knowledge and Understanding X is the Great teacher. we are the disciples of X but he teaches by his spirit X is the Luminary he is as the sun and the morning star but the spirit of X is as the Rays an as the very light it self the sun dont Enlighten us

But God hath Revealed them unto us by his spirit for the spirit searcheth all things -----------------______________________ The spirit of God dont only teach men the knowledge of X by Inspiring Indi Inspiring the prophets and Apostles and Inditing the scriptures but by Immediate Application to the soul of the believer see 1 Joh 2 27 But the Anointing which Ye have Recieved of him Abideth in you and ye need not that any man teach You But as the same Anointing teacheth you all things and is truth and is no lie by the Anointing is doubtless meant the Pouring out of the holy Ghost upon the soul. Anointing is a Common ei Representa tion of appli the Application of the holy Ghost in scripture Now this Cant be meant of teaching by Inditing the scripture but it is by an Immediate application of the holy Ghost that is Represented by anointing the soul ex . ________________________ This spiritual teaching is a work of mighty power upon the heart. tis Compared to the Creation of light in the beginning of the world 2 Cor 4. 6 for God Who Commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts Giving the light of the knowledge of the Glory of God in the face of Jesus X Tis a Work of Creation like Givi Creating of Eyes to marginal see. deut. 29. 4 tis like opening the Eyes of the Blind a more mighty work than Enlightening the bodily Eyes X opend many blind Eyes which was to show that he Came into the world to Open the Eyes of the blind spiritually blind. X may Give unto You the spirit of wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of him the Eyes of Your Understanding being Enlightened that Ye may know what is the hope of his Calling and what the Riches of the Glory of his Inheritance in the saints. ______________________________________________________ II Tha Tis the spirit of Jesus X that makes like to Jesus X we have hear'd under the former doctrine that true believers have an Image of the Glory and excellency of Jesus X upon their souls and that the sight they have of the Glory of X Changes them into this likeness they have a transforming sight of the Glory of X. But now in this doctrine we are taught that this is done by the spirit of that person whose Glory is seen tis X only that makes men like to himself by his sp own spirit Gho and he doth in his way by Giving a sight of himself by Revealing himself to the soul. Tis the spirit of X that makes this Great Change in the marginal soul that Gives a new nature that Creates an the man the second time. Joh 3. 5. 6 verily verily I say Unto thee except a man be born of water and the spirit he Cannot Enter into the kingdom of God that Which is born of the flesh is flesh and that Which is born of the spirit is spirit. and Titus 3. 5 Not by Works of Righteousness which we had have done But According to his mercy he saved us by the Washing of Regeneration and Renewing of the holy Ghost Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus X our saviour. The assimilating of the work of assimilating unto X or making like to him is begun by the spirit of X in Regeneration in the New Creation. as we Read the spirit of God moved upon the face of the unformed world in the first Creation and brought it into a beautifull Order so the spirit of God X moves upon the hearts of men that are naturally as dark and Ev unformed to be work in it divine beauty and Excellency. so this work is Carried on in sanctification still by the spirit of Jesus the Whole of work of sanctification both in the

And Indeed holiness in the saints seems to be nothing else but the spirit of Jesus X living and acting in the sa them that is their principle of holiness X Jesus has Recieved the spirit without measure and he Gives of that spirit which he Recieves to those that Are his and that is his his Grace. the Indwelling of that is a living principle of holy fear, and love and Joy. and disposes to humility to meekness and acts of love to an excellent and Amiable behaviour. _____________________ III Prop these things Are done Only by the spirit of X alone ti they Are never done by Angels. w tho they Are ministring spirits sent forth to minister to them Who shall be the Heirs of salvation and they are excell in strength and we Read of angels being Instrumental in Revealing the Law and from time to time Revealing the will of God but we Never Read of angels Giving spiritual Understanding opening the Eyes of the mind and Giving a new heart and Creating the soul anew marginal in X Jesus. Neither Can Ministers make men like X they are also Called Angels the Angels of the Churches and they tis their Business as Coworkers with X to Endeavour to Perswade men to be Reconciled to God but all that they Can do is to speak to men externally they Cant Change and Renew the heart they Can tell of the Glor ies of X but Cant Give eyes to see it they Can exhort

The Image of God in the soul is the most beautifull of all the works of Creation. there is no work so excellent as that the sun moon and stars are Glorious works but not so Glorious as Gods spiritual Image. mens bodies are a Curious Pieces of workmanship far excelling all works of art as human Invention but Gods Grace in the soul is far a far more excel lent work yea tis a more excellen beautifull and Glorious work than the souls of man themselve it self with all its natural Powers and faculties which Yet is a far more Glorious work than the their bodies. but this is not so excellent as the Grace of God in the soul. for this Grace of God is the Image of his own divine beauty and what Can be more excellent than that doubtless this is the Pearl and diadem of the Whole Creation. Paradise it self is as to the outward Glories of it is not so Glorious a work as the Grace of God in mens heart. Therefore doubtless it is too Great an honour to Any Creature to be the au whe ther Angel or man to be the Author of this work. it

ther Angel or man to be the Author of this work. it would it not be so Great an honour for a Creature to be the Author of sun moon and stars and all the Rest of marginal the Creation as to be the author of true Grace and holiness. tis unreasonable to suppose that God would Retain to himself only the Lesser honour of Creating the Inferiour an works and Give the Greater honour of Creating the most excellent work of all to tha Creature any Creatures much Less to such a little abject miserable Creature as fallen man . No this is an honour that God Reserves only for his son beloved son to work by his own spirit. Yea the Grace of God in mens heart Can hardly be Called a Creature tis Gods Own beauty and excellency that is Uncreated and Eternal Which in is not properly made but Communicated. it is as we said before the spirit it is God himself. therefore they that are full of Grace are full of God X they ar full of God Ephes 3 17 18 19 That X may dwell in Your hearts by faith that ye being Rooted and Grounded in love may be able to Comprehend with all saints what is the Length Breadth and Length Length and depth and height and to know the love of X which Passeth knowledge that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. There are many men in the world that Hold that men Can make themselves Godly but their Opinions are not only Contrary to scripture not contrary to the Whole scripture to the whole bible from beginning to end but tis also very Contrary to Reason. ___________________________________________________________ before we proceed to the Application it may marginal be Proper to Answer to An Enquiry. It __________________ Enq. it may be Enquired Why'e the spirit of God is here Called the spirit of X. Joh 7 38 39 he that believeth in me Out of his belly shall flow marginal Rivers of living waters But he spoke of the spirit Which they that believe on him should Recieve for the holy Ghost was not yet Given for because that Jesus was not Yet Glorified. ______________________________________________________ 2 Another Reason Why he is Called the spirit of X is because that in this work of Enlightening and Changing mens hearts as subservient to X and his messenger. X the holy Ghost in all his Gracious operations upon mens hearts in En Converting & sanctifying Quickening & strengthening and Comforting is the messenger of Jesus X Joh 15 26 But When the Comforter is Come Whom I will send from the Father even the spirit of truth Which Proceedeth from the Father he shall testify of me. and 16. 7 It is expedient for You that I Go Away for if I Go not away the Comforter will not Come but If I depart I will send him unto you. so All that the holy Ghost does amon upon the hearts of men he does as subservient as Carrying on his work and Applying his Redemption. Redeeming of men is the work that X has Undertaken and he so Carries it on by the holy spirit Joh 16 14 he shall Glorifie me. for he shall Recieve of mine and shall show marginal it unto You. that it is wholly at Gods dispose whether ever they shall be Converted Let them do what they will. they would be afraid still to Go on in sin Least they should provoke God to Resolve that he never would bestow it upon them . but they are Ready to think that there is time enou enough herafter and if they set themselves Earnestly to seek it tho it be a Great While hence. they Are Ready to Com there is no Great danger but that they Can Get they think they Can Repent where they Please and that is a temptation to em to Put off Repentance marginal 2. Another Evidence of it is that sinners expect to be able to make themselves holy is their being so apt to be discouraged after they have sought a little while and find they dont obtain The Reason why they Are discou so they Are discouraged and have a Good mind to Leave off trying any more. and the Reason is they expected soon to have Obtain'd it by their own Power they thought they Could Easily have brought themselves to believe and Repent by their Endeavour and Industry. and the but they have they set out with such an expectation . But they have been trying and dont find Labouring and dont Cant make it do they think they hant mended themselves they dont see that they have brought themselves any think thing nearer to ho holiness and as they thought they should have been able to but they see their hearts are as hard as ever and so they their Courage fails and they are Ready to Give out ____________________________ wheras If they had been Convinced before hand that they Could do nothing that with all that they Could do they Could not mend their own hearts. it would ad be any disappointment to 'em when they find it is so by experien[ce] marginal it is no more than they knew before and they would not be discouraged by that but would still wait upon God who has it at in his own breast so when When and to whom he will show mercy But thus this doctrine offers Enough to Consideration to marginal Every at once to quash all their vain trust In their own strength. how vain a thing is it for you t to think to do

will would be hatefull and abominable in his sight __________________________________________________________ 2 from this doctrine Learn to hav Glorious the saints will be made in heaven. if here in this world to by seeing the Glory of X as in a Glass darkly and seeing but a faint Glimpse in Comparison. they are so transformed into the same Image into a likeness of the same Glory and are made partakers of the divine nature how Glorious will they be when they Come to see him face to face they shall not need the Gospel to Reveal him they shall then sees him Immediately and Dwell in his Presence. 1 Corinth 13 12 for now we see through a Glass darkly but then face to face Now I know but in Part but then shall I know even as I am known we we we may Conclude therefore that as there will be marginal a far more Glorious sight so they shall be Changed into the same Image to a much Greater degree. 1 John 3. 2 Beloved now we are the sons of God And it doth not yet Appear What we shall be but we know that when he shall Appear we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is. the Apostles You see Argues that we shall surely be like X hereafter to a Greater degree than now because we shall see him as he is that will transform & make like him. a now they are now so much like him as to be called his sons sons but this is nothing to what they shall be. ___________________________________________________________ The[1]. 3 Use may be of self examination . Let those that Entertain hope that they have seen Xs Glory ex amine themselves whether they Ever had such a sight as Changed them into a likeness unto X try themselves by this doctrine try themselves by this doctrine whether they their sight of X was true or no if it was true it has Changed you into a likeness to the same Glory --whether or no that You have felt the Power of the discovery so that Your nature is Changed into a likeness

covery so that Your nature is Changed into a likeness to him when you if you have seen aright you have been a New Creature ever since. marginal Persons sometimes are affected a may Considerably for a little while by the thoughts of the love of X but it dont Come with a mighty Changing Power it soon Goes and Leaves the Na same Nature as it found there is no effectual Change of the heart. but a true sight has a sanctifying Influence it makes that Change that never Can be unmade a Examine therefore any sights of X that Ever you have had has made You of the same temper and disposition as he was of has of filthy made you pure of Carnal made you spiritual of Earthly made you heavenly. but has it made you to abhor and loath sin as the most odious thing in the world and has it made You delight in holiness. have You Got such a sight of the love of X as has Changed your nature very much into love are you disposed to love X and to love his people. is it Enough to make a man dear to you to thin that he is one of X. are you of a meek a peaceable and a forgiving disposition. are you faithfull do like X do You hate all ways of dishonesty and all ways of deceit. and has it Changed your life do you live a holy. and a spiritual life do you lit live a life of love marginal a life according to the life of X. I shall mention some things more particularly by which you may try your self whether you have had [1 it will Convince you of the truth of the Gosp] marginal a true sight of X.

ing to see him oftener and to see more. if your heart is made like X your heart will be Going after X. a man may say that he longs to see X because he longs to be deliver'd from his danger and from his trouble. he longs for safety because he is dreadfully afraid and he longs for safe ty Ease because he is dreadfully afflicted. but he

ty Ease because he is dreadfully afflicted. but he that sees has seen Jesus X he does as it were naturally Long after Jesus X for his own sake. it is like the natural appetite. as it is natural for the body to Crave food so the Renewed soul has an appetite after Jesus. he natu has a natural desire after seeing and Conversing with X his very heart is drawn that way. if it be Your Natu nature to desire X then Nature upon occasion will discover it self sometime upon the mention of X you'll feel it to the Bottom of your heart and it will Renew your longings after a sight of X. as when a man mentions a pleasant sort of food to a hungry man or drink to marginal a thirsty it Renews his Appetite. it I dont say it will alwaies be so but sometimes upon occasions your New Nature will thus discover itself. __________________________________________ [4] 2. if you have had a true sight of X it will make your marginal hearts Rest in him as a saviour and as a portion. the heart of a natural man is not at Rest. it is uneasily Going from one thing to another pursuing after happiness. and when in trouble about the danger of hell then it is flying from one thing to another for defence and for saf safety. [________________________________] marginal But when once the soul has seen X the soul finds Rest heart Can Rest in X as a saviour and as a happiness. when the excellency of X is discoverd it is enough, the soul is Contented without another. he has found the fountain of blessedness he desires no th Other blessedness. this was typified by noahs dove who wanderd about seeking Rest and finding none till she Return'd to the ark window of the ark and noah Put forth his hand and took him in. _____________________________ Therefore examine your self how do you find Can you feel that you Can take up an your Contentment in X is a must you forever in X . hear what the Psalmist says Ps 73 25 Whom in have I in heaven but thee and there in none on Earth that I desire besides thee 3dly
