Lesson 1- 50 min

General Focus History: Introduction to Aboriginal life and culture. Health and Physical Education: Introduction to tools used for hunting, and purpose of hunting.

Learning Activities The class will watch a quick introduction video on aboriginal life/culture. Using their ipads, students in groups of 3-4 will be given a key word to research in relation to aboriginal culture. The lesson will commence with each group giving a minor presentation on their chosen word giving an overall brief introduction to each other. (ICT embedded)

2- 50 min

History: Research activity on aboriginal settlement. Students to explore where Aboriginal people primarily settled and why. Health and Physical Education: Students to explore the nature of sources such as Boomerangs, Spears and Tribal Dancing for Aboriginal Australians. Students to explore what the sources are used for and identify the origin and purpose of each source.

Using the internet and worksheet provided students are to research Aboriginal settlement, Aboriginal hunting tools and Aboriginal tribal dancing. Working in pairs students formulates a poster on research. Students to present poster to class. (ICT embedded) (Intercultural understanding embedded) Review homework. (Cultural artefact from own culture) Respond to questions about the photographs, artefacts and newspaper articles. Discuss questions with class. (Intercultural understanding embedded) Using PowerPoint engage students on technological advancements of Boomerangs, Spears and Tribal Dancing. Students complete worksheet on technological advancements throughout PowerPoint. Guest speaker from the Aboriginal youth centre to speak to students

History: Identifying the origin and purpose of the Aboriginal historical artefacts. Health and Physical Education: Indentifying the origin and purpose of the Aboriginal historical artefacts within Health and Physical Education.

History: Technological advancements of Aboriginal artefacts such as Boomerangs, Spears and Tribal Dancing. How are they used today? What do they reveal about technology? Health and Physical Education: Students apply how the Aboriginal artefacts interrelate with Health and Physical Education.

5- 50 min

Health and Physical Education: Javelin practical activity and the technique needed. History: The use and technique of the spear for hunting purposes.

(ICT embedded) Students then answer questions to give a deeper understanding before going outside to complete the role play activity using the javelin. The lesson incorporates auditory, visual and kinaesthetic learning. Warm up with a game of Rock, Bridge, Tree. Students than move into skill work practicing the overhead throw. Move into peer assessment students working 1 on 1 with each other. Students practice throwing the Boomerang in an open space Students to perform the Aboriginal tribal dance. Students develop skills in dancing and knowledge of the Aboriginal culture. (To be conducted in the gymnasium) In groups of 5 students to apply understandings and formulate their own tribal dance to present to the class. Students to complete review worksheet on tribal dancing. (ICT embedded) Brainstorm: How are Aboriginal artefacts used for gathering food? Is the food gathered good nutrition? Why or why not. What does this reveal about the way we find our food sources in present world? How has the world advanced?

Health and Physical Education: Throwing practical activity. History: Which Aboriginal artefacts are replicated today within throwing techniques/activities?

7- 50 min

Health and Physical Education: Tribal dancing practical activity. History: What was the purpose of tribal dancing? Has it influenced dancing in the present day? What does tribal dancing show about the past?

8- 50 min

Health and Physical Education: Aboriginal artefacts used for nutrition. How did Aboriginal people find their food? How does the use of these artefacts lead to good nutrition? History: What does this reveal about the way we find our food sources in present world? How has

the world advanced? Quick quiz using socrative to be conducted. Complete crossword on nutrition and Aboriginal artefacts. Quick quiz using socrative to be completed. (ICT embedded)

Health and Physical Education: Identify personal, community factors and cultural beliefs that influence students own food selection. History: What is the difference between the Aboriginal culture food choices during settlement and the culture today? Compare the different between the Aboriginal cultures food selections at settlement with your food selections in present day.

In workbooks students to identify personal, community factors and cultural beliefs that influence students own food selection. Discuss as a class student responses. Reflect on the difference between how food choices and Aboriginal food choices during settlement. What are the differences? (Intercultural understanding embedded) Complete essay under test conditions covering unit.

10- 50 min

Summative Assessment: Essay.
