WHAT is a hero or a heroine? My dictionary defines a hero as

“a man or boy admired for his bravery, great deeds, or noble
qualities” but I think it’s not quite as simple as that.
If we were in search of a summer sporting hero then I suppose that
a certain British tennis player who so nearly reached the final of
Wimbledon would be near the top of many lists. If we are looking for
someone with “noble qualities and bravery” then Nelson Mandela
must be in any top five list. You could even argue that the hundreds
of thousands of protesters dressed in black and green who flooded
the streets of Tehran Iran recently in a sombre, candlelit show
of defiance and mourning for those killed in clashes after Iran’s
disputed presidential election are all heroes and heroines!
What does it take in 2009 to achieve heroic and legendary
status? The recent sudden death of Michael Jackson will no Andy Glover has lived in
doubt increase his status as a legend! Long gone are the days Hoole with his wife Sue
when our heroes were explorers or military leaders, or even suave for 20 years. Andy began
members of the royal family. Instead it is the faces from reality TV at Hoole Baptist Church,
shows or from wannabe pop bands. on Westminster Road,
Even some of today’s sporting heroes are far from what we would as Youth Pastor, before
want as role models. Which leads me to ask the question: “Where becoming the Pastor and
have all our heroes and heroines gone? The people of the UK and now Team Leader.
especially the young people are in desperate need of good old-
fashion heroes. Where are the people we can look up to, of whom we
can say, “ I want to be like her” or “I’m going to be like him when I grow up?”
In the midst of the story of our lives I believe we are looking for a hero, is it your dad, your best
friend or your school teacher, maybe it’s a popstar or football player whoever it may be, having
heroes is a natural part of life, we all need someone to look up to, someone we aspire to be like,
some one who can give us hope that life can be diffrernt.
Of course there are many unsung heroes in our communities, people who volunteer time to
work with the young and old and the vulnerable and poor within society, those who deal with
tragic circumstances of life with dignity and respect and those who are living lives of genuinely
heroic quality like the single mum raising her children.
It is really easy to miss these heroes and heroines because we have been sucked in by
the myth-building techniques of television and the media where heroes are only portrayed
as superheroes. Using their super powers, they fight imaginary and real life problems like
crime, greed, drugs and villains. Super heroes and heroines entertain us with excitement and
adventure. So we don’t see the heroes and heroines living in the real world.
I’m not sure the church is place where many would look to find their heroes or heroines but if
we were to look at the person and life of Jesus Christ then I believe we will find a hero, someone
to follow, and if Christians really are followers of this Jesus then we should be able to find in
these people qualities and character that will prompt the question “I want to be like him/her!

CUSTOMERS at the Lodge Bar had a bonzer afternoon recently.
The bar, on Hoole Road, was the venue for an Oz-fest day which had the aim of bringing
the Hoole community together with activities all the family could enjoy.
There were three solo performers play during the day as well as local DJ Daryl Thomas
who played summer chill out tunes into the evening.
An outside bar and Australian BBQ serving kangaroo kebabs and emu burgers kept
punters outside to enjoy the hot weather. A paddling pool was put up for the children to
enjoy and all staff wore beach wear to keep the theme Australian.

A. I would never advocate the use of
sunbeds. A suntan is the skins response
to exposure to harmful radiation in order
to protect itself. In short, a tanned skin is a
damaged skin. If you are very fair skinned
take sensible precautions – apply a very

AUGUST IN YOUR GARDEN

Gardening by Janet Heath
AUGUST can be a dull month in the garden as the spring and early summer flowering shrubs and
perennials are over and tree foliage can look a bit tired.
With a bit of planning, you can have colour in the garden if you concentrate on flowering
perennials and some shrubs. Flowering shrubs include such favourites as hydrangeas,
Hypericum Hidcote with its shiny buttercup yellow flowers, Lavatera, which flowers for weeks in
shades of white and pink and Buddleia, try the variety Black Knight with its deep purple flowers.
If you go for flowers, there are many perennials that will reliably flower every year especially if
you have a sunny border. Campanula lactiflora is tall with clusters of bell flowers in white or pink.
For something different and if you have slightly damp soil, consider Inula hookeri which will give
you large, yellow delicately fringed daisy flowers about 75cm (30ins) tall in July and August. Pair it
with scarlet or deep pink Dahlias for a bright show of summer colour. Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath
is an old cottage garden favourite with tiny button white flowers on tall stems (75cm (30ins) which
will give you an airy cloud of white.
In the vegetable garden you should keep your, salads, tomatoes, beans and courgettes watered.
If you pick them regularly, they will continue to produce. Beans and peas will tend to stop
producing if pods are allowed to mature. Late salads and radishes can be sown for cropping in
autumn. Try some of the salad leaves for winter such as Land Cress which is similar in flavour to
watercress but easier to grow in fertile soil that does not dry out. Spinach can also be sown for
winter and spring cropping again in rich fertile soil.
August is a good time to clip hedges for the last time in the year. Lavender can also be clipped
back after flowering for bushy growth next year. Remember not to cut back into wood where there
is no green growth, as this will kill the plant.
Lawns may well be looking tired after long dry spells but they will come back again after early
autumn rains. Rather than waste water on the lawn, just accept the situation!
