y Sandusky who, just a week ago, actually asked a judge to overturn his convictions for sexually abusing ten boys entrusted to him has been moved from the notorious Greene State Prison near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to continue serving his 60 year sentence (parole eligibility after 30 years). He had previously been detained at the Camp Hill processing center of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections outside of Harrisburg, before finally being delivered to the maximum-security institution of Greene State, where he will spend the term of his natural life presumably with nearly 2,000 inmates. For those with a more vigorous sense of justice, it might be disappointing to learn that Sandusky will spend that time in robust protective custody, in complete isolation from the convicted murderers and death row inmates that roam the cells of SCI-Greene. Because he is nonetheless in maximum security, Sandusky will never be able to embrace a family member again, even during their allowed onceweekly visit to his new life of otherwise 23-hour lockdown seclusion. Similarly to the federal Florence ADX Supermax prison that houses the worst of the worst the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, many former Al-Qaeda operatives, former FBI spy Robert Hanssen, Terry Nichols of the Oklahoma City Bomber two-man alliance (Timothy McVeigh was executed in 2001), Sandusky will be allowed one hour of exercise in an open space next to his cell every day, granted a shower every other day, and will take his meals in his room. As for company, he will have a personal television and radio in his cell. Nonetheless, there is a chance that he may come into contact with other inmates although that would be a breakdown in prison procedure. Should he be excused from his cell for any reason (such as an unforeseen future trial date, or a prison emergency of some kind, etc), he is supposed to be escorted with increased security designed to render him inaccessible to the other prison inmates. The question remains whether, because of his enhanced media profile, any of this will be enough to keep Sandusky from being a name-maker for some inmate seeking infamy on the outside, and respect on the inside. Given prison dynamics, anyone that could get to him would skyrocket from whatever rung on the prison totem pole they currently occupy, to the very top. After all, notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, convicted in 1991 of killing and in some cases, eating 33 boys and men had been placed in protective custody for an uneventful year, before prison officials decided to allow interaction with other inmates . He was bludgeoned to death by an inmate Christopher Sarver in 1994, who had hoped to make a name for himself in the prison population.
Only time will tell if Jerry Sanduskys dubious celebrity will have sealed his fate already, as it is difficult to imagine there arent already inmates plotting to reach the disturbed and disgraced former Penn State football defensive coordinator, who has thus far shown no remorse for his crime an attribute that is common among sexual predators.
