POS NO: 132 1. PURPOSE OF POSITION To contribute to the general operations of the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, including the provision of information services to Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales (HHT) staff and members of the public; the provision of circulation services to HHT staff; and the development of the CSL&RCs online catalogues and databases, especially through the maintenance of the serials catalogue and the addition of digital images to catalogue records. 2. ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT OF POSITION The Historic Houses Trust of NSW is responsible for the interpretation, conservation and management of a portfolio of historic properties in NSW. The Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection supports the Trusts work in interpreting and managing places of cultural significance, particularly through the development of a specialist research collection related to the history of house and garden design and interior furnishing in New South Wales. The Collection is housed within the Trusts Head Office and is a public facility. 4. NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION A. Work Performed

The position holder is responsible for the day-to-day management of the serials collection, including: maintenance of serials accession records maintenance of the integrity of the serials catalogue monitoring the receipt of serials subscriptions initiating serials claims processes

processing, shelving and general day-to-day physical maintenance of the serials collection preparation and electronic distribution of a regular current awareness bulletin

The position holder is responsible for the implementation of agreed circulation procedures, including processing of issues, returns and reserves from the CSL&RC collection; and for providing inter-library loan services to HHT staff and to the wider library community through participation in the Libraries Australia Document Delivery [LADD] service. The position holder assists the Reference Librarian in the provision of information services based on the CSL&RC collections to Historic Houses Trust staff and to the general public and takes responsibility for monitoring the link-checker report generated by the Library Management System. The position holder participates in HHT-wide electronic information projects, including the presentation of content on the CSL&RC web page and the addition of image records to the HHTs Image Management & Storage System. The position holder works as part of a team with other CSL&RC staff to deliver training and presentations to visiting groups of library students and to such students on professional placements. The position is responsible for collection maintenance tasks, including: end-processing of newly catalogued items planning and carrying out a regular programme of shelf-checking and shelftidying, including renewing labels and book covers.

Challenges/Problem Solving

The position holder is expected to make recommendations about normal improvements to existing methods and procedures including: collection maintenance, storage and shelving problems and current awareness services. The position holder is expected to make recommendations about titles for purchase derived from readers requests for inter-library loans or from reference enquiries. The position holder is required to have an appropriate level of expertise and confidence to supervise the library during the short-term, temporary, absences of more senior staff.

The position holder works within agreed guidelines and procedures as a member of a team and develops operational competence to resolve problems of limited complexity.

Communication

The position holder is expected to communicate regularly with all members of the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection team; is required to provide assistance in the use of the Librarys databases and collection to the HHT staff generally and to members of the public; and to maintain timely and professional responses to electronic communications which arrive via LADD and library@hht.net.au. 5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE


Associate Diploma of Arts (Library Practice) or equivalent. Experience with Libraries Australia and other on-line databases. Knowledge of, and experience using, USMARC, DDC, LCSH and AACR2. Experience providing circulation and information services to Library patrons in an automated environment. Knowledge of, and experience in, inter-library loan procedures.
