Metro Bus

Lahore is the second largest urban centre in Pakistan. It is the provincial capital for most populous province of Pakistan Punjab with population of more than 9 Million inhabitants in 2006. The transport demand amounts to some 13.5 million daily motorized trips to work, shopping and recreation other than walking. The rising incomes of growing population have generated increasing travel and demands for higher quality transport. Lahore is the only city in the world of its size and the population of over 11 million that does not have a proper public transport system. While knowing and considering this fact Metro bus service and the whole celebration makes a little sense but Lahore is just one district among all 36 districts in Punjab. A proposed Lahore Metro, first proposed in 1991 was shelved in 2012 in favour of the rapid bus scheme. The visionary Punjab chief minister decided to launch an organized and modern system, having no substitute not only in the country but the whole South Asia, with an aim to provide a dignified, comfortable and safe transport to the millions of the citizens who were badly annoyed with the overcrowded wagons, buses and uncomfortable and expensive rickshaws. Planning for the rapid bus transit system was developed by the Punjab government in the last quarter of 2011, Construction started in March 2012. Mayor of Istanbul Dr. Kadir Topaz also announced a gift of 100 buses for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The Lahore bus rapid transit or Lahore Metro Bus is a bus rapid transit system in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. The first section, which consists of a 27-kilometres long route and 29 bus stations between Gajumata to Shahadra, was opened by Turkeys Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozda and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif at an elaborate event in February 2013.

The Metro Bus project was undertaken and completed by the opposition partys Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The route covers dozens of residential and commercial localities along the citys main artery Ferozepur road linking Lytton road, Jain Mandar, MAO College, Lower Mall, Civil Secretariat, Aiwan-i-Adal, Chowk Katchehry (District Courts), Shrine of Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh, Ravi Road and Shahadra town. The other routes are over mountain passes. At 8-Kilometer section of the route is elevated. The system uses e-ticketing and Intelligent Transportation System wand. The system is managed by the HUD & PHE Department through TEPA with the IT part is being carried out in coordination with Punjab IT Board. The predicted average speed is 27 km/h. The Rs. 72 billion Build-Operate-Transfer basis is a result of collaboration between the Punjab government and the Turkish government. Lahore Transport Company (LTC) has defined two corridors, on which the Bus Transit will run: Ferozepur Road line extending 28 km and Multan Road Line extending 12 km. Lahore Metro Bus started on 10 February 2013.According to official figures, the route is used by 130,000 people each day.
