This Friday, November 1 , is the Feast of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be at 9am and 7pm. On Saturday, November 2nd, the Feast of All Souls, Mass will be celebrated at 8:30am (though this is not a Holy Day of Obligation). Today (or tomorrow if youre reading this on Saturday), is National Priesthood Sunday. Unfortunately, I wont be here this weekend, but I hope you let the visiting priest know that you are praying for him and please, remember me in your prayers as well. Let us all pray that more men may hear the call to priesthood because we need good leaders and servants for Gods people. This past Friday I joined with the priests & people of the Diocese to participate in the Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral for retired Auxiliary Bishop Quinn. Some of you may recall that Bishop Quinn was with us just a few months ago when he conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on a couple of adults and on several of our young people. That was on Sunday, June 9 th. His death was sudden and unexpected and that always shocks us into the reality that we never know how much time we will have in this life. I have worked with Bishop Quinn while in Lorain and I can tell you that he was a kind, intelligent, sincere shepherd who cared very much for clergy and the faithful. Here is a brief bio that is found on the Diocesan website (www.dioceseofcleveland.org) where more information about his many accomplishments can be found: Most Reverend A. James Quinn, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Cleveland died in the morning hours of apparent natural causes on Friday, 18 October 2013 at his residence in Westlake. He was 81. A. James Quinn was born on 8 April 1932. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland on 24 May 1958. He was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland on 14 October 1983. He was ordained as Bishop on 5 December 1983. His retirement date was 14 June 2008. He resided at Saint Ladislas Parish in Westlake. May he rest in the joy of the Resurrection. There will be games, food and hay rides weather permitting from 2:00 - 5:00 PM. What are we really celebrating on Halloween? Halloween is a derivation of the term holy person or saint. The recognition of the All Saints Feast day dates back to Pope Boniface in the 7th century when he dedicated the Pantheon in Rome to the Blessed Mother and the martyrs. Pope Gregory III made the Roman observance on November 1st when he dedicated a chapel in the Vatican Basilica to All the Saints. All Saints day is a Holy day of obligation.
