Dave and Mary Sollie

Dave and Mary Sollie are originally from Minnesota and have come to Arizona by way of other states. They lived the past 20 years in Colorado where they raised their son and twin daughters. Their family has grown to include a wonderful daughter-in-law and three beautiful grandchildren. Dave retired from the business world and Mary from the health insurance industry. After an indepth search over the past three to four years, they decided on Arizona for the beautiful weather and were happy to leave the snow behind. They love all of the great amenities of Sun City Festival starting with the wonderful, friendly people who happily live here. The active-adult lifestyle really suits them. Dave is an avid golfer, softball player and Desert Horizons Neighborhood Representative. Mary is working on her golf game, exercise classes, Players Club Mah Jongg, Glass Arts Club and Caring Neighbors. They are grateful for the opportunity to live this retirement lifestyle in such a great community as Sun City Festival.

What You Dont Know About Fat?

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., Fitness/Wellness Director

Fat, a simple three-letter word, is something which can have significant impact on our physical and mental well-being. We work to keep fat off our bodies. We strive to avoid eating too much fat. Having fat in our bodies is critical for optimal function. Too much fat however, especially certain types, creates health problems. According to Shawn Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist, we have three different types of fat: white, brown and beige. Each type of fat has a different function. White fat makes up more than 90 percent of the fat in the body. This type of fat has a low metabolic rate (burns very few calories). Most believe the white fat is basically useless and serves mostly as storage for extra calories. Brown fat, darker in color due to greater blood supply, can actually burn calories. Certain mammals use brown fat to provide fuel and create body heat in times of cold. Humans have very little brown fat and, unfortunately, are unable to get any metabolic boost and body heat from it. Beige fat is between white and brown fat in caloric consumption. A small amount of research shows white fat can actually be converted to beige fat. Hormones released in response to exercise, as well as some foods-licorice root, hot peppers and brown seaweed, may cause white fat cells to be converted to beige fat. This could create a metabolic and calorie-burning boost beyond that of the exercise itself. Location of fat on the body is also important. Belly fat, sometimes called visceral fat, can create health issues not seen from fat stored in other parts of the body (thighs, arms, etc). Visceral fat is very sensitive to the stress hormone cortisol and tends to be the storage of choice in times of stress. Also, visceral fat, on its own, releases inflammatory chemicals which travel to the brain creating feelings of fatigue and hunger leading to overeating and sedentary behavior. This vicious cycle leads to storage of more belly fat and more inflammatory chemicals. Anything which fights inflammation, omega 3 fats, yogurt with active cultures, and other foods, help reduce the brain signals from visceral fat. Creating a calorie deficit is the best way to get rid of fat. The notion of fat burning exercise as a specific type of exercise is inaccurate. Simply burning more calories by working longer and/or harder during exercise and by consuming fewer calories is truly the answer to fat loss. Fat, as we see, effects mood and health. Creating caloric deficit and consuming foods with anti-inflammatory properties can minimize fat storage and reduce the amount of fat already stored in the body.
