LIGHT FROM THE EAST WM JAMES ANGELOS

November. Yes this was the month that a surrender that was supposed to end all wars was made. Yes many years ago it was signed in a time when all it took to consummate a deal was made on a hand shake. People believed in each other, their government, and their country. After another World War and several other wars for various reasons that only politicians know. Our Country made the month of November a month of Thanks to Our Veterans month. Yes! Thanks to the Veterans for saving us from being forced into speaking German, Italian, Japanese. Korean, and hopefully no other foreign language in the future. You people who spat on returning veterans, demeaned them at every opportunity, YOU should have been thankful that they, the Veterans, kept our shores free. Because you would have been shot and killed on the spot by the conquering enemy. In keeping with the honoring of our Veterans, I would like to have all Veterans wear your uniforms to our stated communications for the month of November. If you don't have a uniform, and you still have your hard earned medals, wear them on a jacket to Lodge AND BE PROUD!!! We all, the Veterans, had a job to do and we did it. Some of us lucky ones came back in one piece. Some were wounded, and "Alas Brother" some did not. God Bless America. and ALL YOU VETERANS. Thank You and God bless you all. WM JAMES ANGELOS

Chaplins Corner Brothers, we as Master Masons, are entitled to a Masonic burial service. It can only be done if the Lodge know that is your wish. You must inform your loved ones of your wishes or at least write them down where those wishes may be found and followed up on. It is totally up to you Brother. At the writing of this article, there is no further word on Brother Jim Scarmada. He is still I the hospital in serious condition from his accident. We all need to keep him and his family in our prayers for a speedy recovery. We also have not heard anything further on Brother Richard Dick Winkle and again we offer him and his family our most sincere prayers. Brothers please, if you know of any sick or distressed Brothers or their families please contact me or the Secretary so that we can offer our assistance if needed. Please contact the Lodge with any information at 787-5696. May the Great Architect watch over and keep you all safe. Chaplin - Jim Reynolds

W John Haas
OLDEST MASONIC LODGE Many Freemasons are curious as to what is the oldest Masonic Lodge in the world. Ive heard Lodge Mother Kilwinning in Scotland is the oldest, but some historians say Lodge of Edinburgh No. 1 (also known as Marys Chapel), Edinburgh, Scotland is the oldest and have records to prove its long-time existence as the oldest Masonic Lodge. These records include minutes of meetings that incorporate the Schaw Statutes which are dated 28 December 1598. The Schaw Statutes were written by William Schaw who was Master of Work to His Majesty and General Warden of the Masonic Craft governing the activities of Operative Masons in Scotland.

From the Secretarys Desk My Brothers, as you know I read all the letters and flyers that come to the Lodge whether it be by paper, mail either electronic or snail mail. I recently read the Trestle Board of our Sister Lodge in the Villages, and the Secretary there has come up with a novel way of recording the attendance of the Brothers to Masonic functions and enabling us to get the Masonic Education Award from Grand Lodge. We must have a minimum amount of 70 points to win the award and whenever a Brother attends an MLT class or School of Instruction, we receive points (IF they are recorded). I will have these forms at the secretaries desk and on a clip outside the office so that all who attend can fill one out and then just put it in the slot in the Secretarys door and I will collect them and enter them into the records. I have included a page of these forms on page 6, that can be printed out and cut apart. I think this is a very easy way to track a very difficult task, so please Brothers, give it a shot and if it doesnt work at least we have tried. Otherwise Brothers, I fear we wont be getting the award this next year, as our attendance at Masonic education functions has been abysmal. I include myself in this as I have not been going either. I will be attending as many as possible from now on. Brothers, once again we have had a Brother pass without us being notified. Brother Arthur Lambright passed all the way back in February of 2012! That is over two years ago and we have kept him on the Emeritus List for the last four years! If you Brothers dont let someone know your wishes then we cannot fulfill our Masonic Obligation to you as a Brother Mason to send you to the Celestial Lodge above or to assist your widow as she should be assisted if she needs help. Put the information in your will or in some prominent place that your loved ones will see when it is your time. Please also update your address and phone number with the Secretary so we can let you know of events happening and changes being made. This information is kept private and no one else other than the Master and myself as Secretary will receive it! Dont forget our Called Communication the 25th and come see how our officers can do in another station.

Figure 1 Edinburgh Lodge No. 1

s documented that as early as 1600, the Lodge of Edinburgh began to admit non-operative Freemasons. In June 1600, the Laird of Auchinleck was made a Speculative member the first authentic record of the making of such a member. During a meeting on 24 August 1721 at which time the Grand Master of England was present; the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Treasurer, the Deacon Convener Trades, and the Clerk to the Dean of the Guild Court were admitted as members. (Continued page 5)

W Hank DeBerry

(Continued from page 4) This date is thought to mark the changeover from Operative to Speculative Freemasonry in Scotland. Edinburgh Lodge No. 1 was demolished in 1787 and the members continued to meet in several locations until 1893 when the new building was constructed and is still in operation today. Because Edinburgh Lodge No. 1 claims the rank of having: the oldest Masonic minutes The Lodge of Records where the first Operative to Speculative Freemasonry began

And, therefore, due to these documented minutes, claims its title as the oldest Masonic Lodge in the world.

And now for the rest of the story Mother Kilwinning the oldest Masonic Lodge in the world? It is number 0 on the Roll and is reputed to be the oldest Lodge not only in Scotland, but the world. In the year 1140, the Abbey of Kilwinning was constructed for an order of monks. It is said at this time traveling Freemason architects were in this area and there is every reason to believe these men were the architects who constructed the Abbey. According to one article I read, the Lodge was founded in the Chapter House within the Abbey and remained there until 1560 at which time the Earl of Eglinton had the building destroyed during the Reformation Period. The Lodge continued to operate at different locations until 1893 when a permanent location was constructed and is still in operation today. Now, here is where disputes come into play. Mother Kilwinnings Lodge records only date back to 1642. Previous records are thought to have been destroyed during the destruction of the building or by fire. So, without this written proof, Lodge minutes of meeting, how can one really be sure it was a working Lodge? Therefore while Lodge of Edinburgh, No. 1 has the oldest Masonic Lodge minutes, it may very well be possible that another Lodge may be able to claim the title of oldest Masonic Lodge in the world. Ill let you decide

Medic Alert Bracelets

Hello again Brothers. The holidays are rapidly approaching and along with the fun, family, and fellowship will also come the over-eating, stress, and anxiety. I would like to take a moment to make you aware of something that is very important to me. I'm sure most of you are already aware of something called Medical ID bracelets. These are bracelets that you can get from any jeweler, and are available in silver, gold, or stainless steel or you can get simple Medical ID bracelets for as low as $10 from any Wal-Mart or pharmacy in your area. These bracelets are engraved or embossed with the Emergency Medical Symbols, known as the Caduceus or Asclepius. They will also be engraved with any medical conditions or allergies that you have been diagnosed with. You never know when accidents will happen and if you are with your loved ones and need immediate medical assistance they can be there to inform the medics, nurses, or doctors, however, if you are alone at the time of a medical emergency the information that the bracelets provide can be extremely helpful. Different medical conditions can sometimes exhibit the same symptoms but require radically different treatment. In these cases the ID bracelet can be invaluable. For example, if you suffer from Diabetes and should have a hypoglycemic episode, (low blood sugar), the signs and symptoms can mimic a stroke. If you have an ID bracelet with DIABETES engraved into it then it can give the first responders or hospital workers a better idea of where to begin with your treatment. Allergies to foods or medicines are especially important to relay to anyone responding to a medical emergency. It can give them a better idea of what may have led to your condition and inform them of what they can, and more importantly when it comes to medial allergies, what they cannot give you in forms of treatment. Medical ID bracelets should contain not only your name, medical conditions, and or allergies but also emergency contact information. For example if you suffer from Type II Diabetes, take medicine for it, and have an allergic reaction to penicillin the information may look something like this: Jane Doe Diabetes Type II On Meds Allergy to Penicillin Mom 555-555-1212. ID bracelets are not only good ideas for yourself but with the rise in allergic reactions and different medical conditions in children today they can come in handy for our children or grandchildren. A simple search online will show that they have many styles available for both men and woman, young and old. Anybody suffering from or know anyone with any of these conditions: Diabetes, Heart Patient, Pacemaker, Heart Stents, Atrial Fibrillation, Mitral Valve Prolapse, Arrhythmia, Lymphedema Alert, Asthma, on blood thinners such as Coumadin, Stroke, Food Allergy, Medicinal Allergy, Bee Sting Allergy, Gastric Bypass, Hemophilia, Alzheimer's, memory sight or hearing impaired, Schizophrenia, Hypertension, Seizures or Epilepsy just to name some of the more common or larger conditions, should think about looking into a Medical ID bracelet. Bro. Ron Glover

Clara Barton the Angel of the Battlefield Clara Barton known as the Angel of the Battlefield during the Civil War, was a nurse, teacher, and humanitarian and today is honored as the Founder of the American Red Cross. Much of the inspiration for her life of service came from her father, Captain Stephen Barton, a Master Mason and a Royal Arch Mason, who impressed her with the tenets of Freemasonry. Captain Barton, was a native of Oxford, Massachusetts and enlisted at the age of 19 to fight in the Indian wars in the West under General Anthony Wayne. After his return to Oxford, he married and later moved to the farm where Clara was born. He was chosen as Captain of the militia and served as moderator of town meetings, selectman , and a member of the legislature. Two months after his marriage, he became a mason in Olive Branch Lodge. Brother Barton combined military spirit, gental disposition, and spirit of philanthropy characteristics inherited by his daughter. After his death, Clara said, As the daughter of an accepted Mason, he bade me seek and comfort the afflicted everywhere. Before his death, he presented his daughter with a gold Masonic emblem to wear in his memory for luck and protection. Clara Barton wore that emblem throughout the war and was never harmed. Later in life, Clara became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was initiated by none other than Rob Morris, the founder of the Order. Just after her initiation she said, My father was a Mason; to him it was a religion, and for the love and honor I bear him, I am glad to be connected with anything like this.
