However, on the same day, October 10,
Prof. Areola refused to accept the letter be-
cause she did not like “the tone and man-
ner” of which the letter was written and
alleged that her words were once again
misinterpreted.
“I refuse to accept a letter in this tone
and manner from your group [The Bedan].
Obviously, Mr. Ramon King III [Manag-
ing Editor] has taken my words (again)
out of context,” Prof. Areola stated.
In response to the vice dean’s refusal,
The Bedan requested the former to clarify
the status of the publication as regards to
the publication fund last October 13 and
deliver her response in black and white to
avoid further “misunderstandings.”
On one hand, Prof. Matilde Santos, pre-
fect of student affairs, informed The Bedan
that Fr. De Villa turned down student
paper’s request to hold the collection of
the publication fee at the current office of
The Spires. Instead, Prof. Santos relayed that
Fr. De Villa allowed The Bedan to make
use of its own office located at rm. 34B-1,
St. Anselm’s Bldg., which is far from the
area of the enrolment task force.
However, the plan to collect the publi-
cation fee by The Bedan on its own, did not
push through since it ran out of ample time
and proper resources.
“Embedded in the law”
On October 15, Prof. Areola issued a note
to The Bedan stating that the law protects
and promotes campus journalism but the
collection and management of funds are
to be dealt with by the publication with
the proper office but not her authority.
“The legitimacy of your publication is
embedded in the law, however the collec-
tion and management of funds are some
things that has to be dealt by your group
with the appropriate office. The office of
the vice dean is regrettably not that of-
fice,” she replied.
As of presstime, The Bedan is still wait-
ing for a response from the rector-presi-
dent and is exhausting all diplomatic means
to arrive at a reasonable resolution.

After the said removal of the publication fees for The Bedan this semester (see
related article), students and professors expressed their sentiments regarding the
said action of the school administration.
“Removing the publication fund of The
Bedan is like removing the rights of each
Bedan,” a student from 2BIT named JB
wrote.
Another student who requested anonym-
ity wrote that, “The Bedan is the only thing
that is right in this mediocre school.”
Meanwhile, Prof. Jesster Fonseca stated
the said move of the administration did not
show the Benedictine values that they teach.
“The withdrawal of The Bedan fee with-
out just reason can only be interpreted as a
withdrawal and disbelief in the value of
communicating the truth especially when
what is at stake is the community’s being.
This act can only mean one thing, a prelude
to annihilation of further values, even life,”
Prof. Fonseca explained.
On one hand, Dr. Fedeliz Tuy emphasized
the importance of the 65-year existence of
The Bedan and its legacy to the Bedan com-
munity.
“The Bedan is already a legacy. [It] has
been in existence for 65 years. This is the
voice of the students. The only publication
where even the alumni can be updated of
what’s really going on in the campus. Your
side at least. This in where students speak
their mind,” Dr. Tuy conveyed.
On the other hand, Dr. Feorillo Petronillo
Demeterio III explained the possibilities
that may occur with the removal of the pub-
lication fund of The Bedan.
“Although the tradition of structured and
organized publication might suffer a set
back, the writing will go on. The paper
could become even more radical as it gains
total independence from the admin. Or it
could also weaken, depending on how
strong the Bedan studentry is,” Dr.
Demeterio discussed.
Further, Prof. Nancy Kimuell-Gabriel
said the removal of The Bedan’s publica-
tion fee can be seen as a big blow to campus
press freedom because it is the sole venue
for airing out the grievances of the students.
“The school paper is the only venue
where students could air their grievances,
express their thoughts and advance a propo-
sition freely,” she stated.
Furthermore, she said silencing the press
reminds her of the Martial Law days when
any one who attempts to oppose the Marcos
regime will face grave consequences.
“People, including admin, who may, at
any one point, find themselves at the losing
end of any conflict or debate should be
humble enough to accept defeat. Silencing
an opponent is clearly a sad retreat to the
realm of the sour losers. It brings forth
memories of the Marcosian tactic of
silencing the opposition and emasculating,
if not shutting down the press,” she ended.
In addition, Dr. Maxwell Felicilda
described the school’s previous
involvement in national issues “as an irony
that San Beda College, being one of the
signatories of the One Voice Movement, a
movement that so unselfishly committed
to the preservation of the right to free
speech, becomes an institution of
repression itself worst than any dictator
this country has ever known.”
Finally, Dr. Felicilda stated how the
administration’s suppression of the right
of the students to free speech damages San
Beda’s vision.
“[Any attempts] to suppress the rights of
the students to free speech destroys the very
vision that San Beda College so proudly
pronounces for a century, that is, to form
students into fully human, wholly Chris-
tian and truly Filipino. Freedom is the very
kernel of humanity. Nobody can claim to
be fully human unless s/he is truly free,”
he ended.

Sasi faces impeachment raps

Josemaria “Jiggy” Marquez, a thrid year legal management major, has filed a letter of complaint which contains allegations of grave misconduct, insubordi-
nation, coercion of subordinates, and electioneering against Student Council (SC) internal vice-president Marvin Sasi.
The complaint which was filed last
July 14 was only endorsed last Septem-
ber 4 by Prof. Matilde Santos, prefect of
student affairs, to SC president Janking
Suravilla.
The reason for this, according to Prof.
Santos, is that there were more impor-
tant matters that need to be addressed
when the complaint was submitted to her
office.
“Ang dami kasing concerns, may mga
naging problema pa tayo na sa tingin ko, ‘yun
ang nagpatagal dun. May mga times na may
cases at issues na mas dapat bigyan ng pri-
ority,” Prof. Santos explained.
She also said her office will not inter-
fere in the complaint versus Sasi and
added that she will leave it into the hands
of the Student Assembly to resolve the
issue.

Meanwhile, Jiggy Maqrquez justified
his decision to file charges against Sasi.

lowed and respected the rule of law.

impeachment complaint against Sasi,
who is a member of rival party, NYPD.
When asked to comment on the com-
plaint filed against him by Marquez, SC
IVP Marvin Sasi said, “kung may problema

Sasi also clarified that his involvement
in Tianco’s campaign during the fresh-

thy Lingad.

Omnibus Election [Code],” Sasi defended.
Furthermore, Sasi said there are more
important issues that students should
tackle and that this is now the best time
that Bedans should unite for the good of
the community.
“Sa time natin ngayon, hindi na dapat
iniintindi ‘yung mga ganyan. Mas marami
pang issue na dapat ayusin,” Sasi stated.
As of press time, SC president Janking
Suravilla said he and the Student Assem-
bly will discuss and look into the details
of the complaint before handing a deci-
sion on the issue.

opportunities in Singapore last September 28 at the Intercontinental Manila.

Dr. Kenneth Paul Tan, LKYSPP-NUS
assistant dean, said the public policy
program of his university aims to shape
future Asian global leaders who will
lead the ASEAN region into greater
heights.
“[The NUS aims] for a better [ASEAN]
region by developing the best public
policymakers they can be,” Dr. Tan said.
Further, he urged young Filipino stu-
dents and executives to pursue their
higher studies at NUS since they are of-
fering a competent academic program
that is relevant to political, social and
economic development.
“In the Philippines, you have a great
and vibrant democracy, the NUS gives
you the objective tools of public policy
analysis [to attain] the kind of society
we would like to have in the future,” Dr.
Tan explained.
He added that NUS is “one of the most
international campuses around the
world today. And one of the underrated

An Anniversary Gift
REMEMBER, remember the first of October.
The timing was perfect. The execution was
flawless. Out of nowhere, a memorandum is-
sued by College of Arts and Sciences dean, Fr.
Anselm Manalastas took off from his office on
the day he flew to New York straight to the
concerned parties (except The Bedan) and for-
ever changed the publication’s 65-year history.
Naturally, the editorial board sought an explana-
tion from the vice dean and only after this, did the
CAS office officially furnish the publication a copy
of the memorandum. The publication also sought a
dialogue with the Rector. However, to our frustra-
tion, both proved to be in vain.
Never in this publication’s existence did it experi-
ence such move from the administration. In the past,
whenever the administration experiences a problem
with the paper, they always call for the editors for a
dialogue or consultation; in other instances, the ad-
ministration heeds the request of the editors for a
dialogue.
Funny how Catholic doctrine preaches open com-
munication lines and responsible free speech when
these basic concepts seem to be alien to the people
running this Catholic institution. Despite the appar-
ent futility, The Bedan is still very open to dialogue.
The administration has already shunned the idea of
consultation and giving the paper enough time to
prepare for their plan but we still hope that they give
us the decency of explaining their rationale for such
move.
Maybe that is wishful thinking, maybe it is not.
However, we try to think of this in a different light.
By subjecting us to tyranny, they only set us free.
And if only for that, we are compelled to thank the
administrators for this 65 th anniversary gift.

SIXTY-FIVE YEARS is no joke.
From its birth to the present, The Bedan
has been the bastion for student democracy
and an avenue for critical thinking. This
publication not only provides the voice of
the students but also gives service to the
entire Bedan community as it exposes not
only news but relevant views as well. We
are one Bedan family and as such, the con-
cern of one is the concern of all.
For six and a half decades, The Bedan’s
readers witnessed how the power of the
pen helped the school become better. Ev-
ery issue it produces contains written testa-
ments of this institution’s history and how
this affects its reason for existence – none
other than the students. However, behind
every issue that we release is an experi-
ence; and behind every article that comes
out is a story of how it was made. Truly, the
strength of this institution within an insti-
tution is its people and its readers.
You have read and seen how this publi-
cation shaped San Beda not just by produc-
ing notable Bedans but also by being part
of the history it records. However, you have
not seen or heard how the editors argue
over every editorial or how these students
struggle to balance their academics with
the demands of being a part of the publica-
tion. You have not experienced the sleep-
less nights in the printing press solely de-
voted to finishing the paper and making it
available to its countless of readers. You
never had to endure the pressures of dead-
lines and the paper trails. You do not know
the way our parents get mad at us for being
dormers at our own homes because of the
seemingly endless presswork nights.
Try asking any alumnus of this publica-
tion about the best thing that happened to
him during his stay in college and he will
surely give you two words for an answer –
LET ME RECOUNT a somewhat lame and
shameful attempt of a fable.
One summer day in a cool forest, Mr. Rab-
bit came strolling out of the forest and into
a beautiful vegetable garden on his way to
his rabbit hole. He was a furry, brown-
haired rabbit with doleful black eyes, thick
gray whiskers and fluffy brown ears. The
vegetable garden was full of plump look-
ing carrots, onions, tomatoes that made Mr.
Rabbit’s stomach growl noisily. Mr. Rabbit
had no intention of eating the delicious veg-
etables in the garden until an old, balding
man thought otherwise.
“Oi! You! Scat! Get off my garden!” the
farmer screamed.
Mr. Rabbit was shocked and scared, so he
quickly hopped outside the garden and into
a hedge where he met three farm animals
who looked liked they wanted to eat the
vegetables in the garden. The horse, pig,
and the fox looked thin and hungry as they
met Mr. Rabbit and they immediately be-
came envious of Mr. Rabbit since they have

member who experienced being part of this
publication can attest to the almost fairy
tale-like love affair he or she experienced
with The Bedan. Many have tried making
sense of this attachment but all proved to
be futile.
The Bedan has become our wife, it has
become home. Our experiences with this
publication have become deeply cherished
memories. Every challenge we undertake,
a lesson learned. Indeed, our life in this
publication will be written in the pages of
our being, no editing needed; every roman-
tic minute with it, forever etched in the in-
ner Bedan in us.
Every page that you read in this publica-
tion has a story, a smaller story that is part
of the bigger fairy tale that is, our life in
The Bedan. And just like the timeless clas-
sics of literature, this fairy tale is filled with
unforgettable characters.

In every fairy tale, there is a storm that
threatens to destroy the very foundations
of a once-prestigious kingdom and bring it
back to the dark ages masterfully crafted
by the Evil Queer. Darker times are ahead.
Soon this school will no longer be the king-
dom of greatness but a marshland run by

I have been searching for an idea that would
justify this act of writing thirty in this paper that
has become my life. And unfortunately, unlike
my other colleagues, I have not been gifted with
the ability to think of brilliant ideas. Rather,
when I contemplate, dozens of ideas comes rush-
ing past me and in the end, leave me with noth-
ing.
So I guess I will just start there – with an idea.
It was the administration’s idea, which is un-
doubtedly brilliant, to stop the collection of the
publication fund. As we all know, this means
that for the second semester, The Bedan would
have to sustain itself from the funds, we our-
selves would have to generate.
It seems like a challenging task enough, and
the first idea we thought about is an indepen-
dent collection of the publication fund. Well, we
thought about, and decided to give it a try. But
then, our very understanding administration
lead by our beloved dean and his cohorts pressed
us further. I would not delve on to details but I
think it is suffice to say that what they suggested

some nerves last semester, jabbing ev-

patay ang The Bedan. Marahil iniisip ng admin
na panalo na sila at wala ng pipigil sa magiging
balakid sa kanila. Oo, wala na nga kaming
pondo pero ano naman ngayon? Sa ginawa
nilang iyon, mas lalo lang nilang pinagtibay
ang loob namin upang maglabas ng mga
balitang magmumulat sa mga Bedista sa
katotohanan.
Hindi pa patay ang The Bedan. At hindi
kailanman matitibag ang animnapu’t limang
taon na kasaysayan ng The Bedan hanggat nasa
panig namin ang mga estudyante. Hanggat
mayroon pang isang Bedistang naniniwala at
naghahangad ng katotohanan, hindi kami
mawawala. Patuloy namin kayong
paglilingkuran dahil alam namin na tunay ang
inyong pagsuporta. Maraming salamat sa inyo.
At para naman sa aming pinakamamahal na
admin, maraming salamat po sa inyong
ginawang pagtanggal sa pondo ng
publikasyon. Sa ginawa ninyong pagtanggal
sa pondo ng The Bedan, pinatunayan po ninyo
na malaman nga ang aming mga balita. Sapul
ba? Muli, maraming salamat po sa inyong
pagsuporta. :-)

and endeavors. Such stories about the great-
ness and simplicity of Bedans are worth re-
membering. Hence, this personality profile is
born.
The story of the Drummer by the Flag-
pole is a paradox – one that we all know
and yet, a story we often find hard to
understand.

Pulling the Rug beneath their Feet

“The Bedan” has been around for 65
long years, making this student publica-
tion older than most of us in the campus.
Modesty aside, it is this paper which is
considered the primary medium of the stu-
dents of the various colleges and depart-
ments of San Beda College. When the
news came that the CAS Dean has in-
structed the Finance Division to stop col-
lecting the student publication fee, I started
to reflect on what are the good things that
“The Bedan” has done to our institution.
A number of these immediately came to
my mind.
First, it definitely has trained our stu-
dents in the democratic value of expressing
their views and hopes. This service is very
much in line with our vision-mission state-
ment of forming future citizens who are “em-
powered to create a social order in accor-
dance with their aspirations” and who are
“committed to building a just and humane
society.”
Second, it gave the students a venue to
hone their skills in creative,reflective and
critical writing as they articulate their expe-
riences, insights and pursuits for excellence.
Third, it has become our mirror where
we can see our beautiful aspects, such as our
triumphs, victories, and achievements, as
well as our blemishes that we need to im-
prove. By carrying our identity and pride,
and reminding us that we are one Bedan
community, it is in effect also the soul of our
institution.
Fourth, it acted as a mechanism of ex-
pressing the side of the students concerning
important issues and matters. Some may call
this function as critique, and the tone of “The
Bedan” as critical. There is not much prob-
lem with these as long as we make a clear
distinction between pessimistic and destruc-
tive critique on one hand and optimistic and
constructive critique on the other hand. I
believe that this publication, throughout the
last 16 years that I have been reading it, had
always been brimming with hope for a bet-
ter San Beda College. The CAS administra-
tion and faculty could easily garner some
lessons and points for improvement from
the students’ sentiments and perceptions.

Stephen.
