Week 1: Focus on Journeys and Flat Stanley

Lesson: Creating Flat Stanley and a Friendly Letter Objective: At the end of this lesson students will understand how to write a letter.
They will also understand how to scan a document and email it.

Writing: W1: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state and opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure. W2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. Language: L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. a. Print all upper- and lowercase letters b. Use common, proper, and possessive nouns c. Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in basic sentences f. Use frequently occurring adjectives g. Use frequently occurring conjunctions L2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuations, and spelling when writing. a. Instructional Directions:
1. Have following video play over the ELMO about how to write a letter. http://youtu.be/DqJs5am0m7c 2. Students should have brought back information on who they are sending their Flat Stanley to and should have that information on their desk. Over the ELMO have the students help write a friendly letter that includes all the components of a letter to check for understanding from the video that they just watched. 3. Pass out following worksheet for the students to fill in the blanks of a friendly letter that they will be emailing to the friend or family member that they are sending their Flat Stanley to. https://docs.google.com/document/d/10NCamIAvWHLFImXvnkGIZmlJ6tCQl6f 3ztZmYGJX5wk/edit?usp=sharing Make sure to walk around and scaffold the students as they fill in the blanks making sure to help with orthography and penmanship. Students will use the information on their desk of who they are sending their Flat Stanley (name and email address) to aid them in filling in the blanks on the friendly letter. 4. After the students complete the letter, put up the following Flat Stanley website which gives them different ideas of how to color their Flat Stanley. https://www.flatstanley.com/resources?subpage=templates 5. Pass out the following blank Flat Stanleys for the students to color and decorate. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EC_3hBG8iZg/T6G2nJo0kKI/AAAAAAAABt4/C0JOfSqsnY/s1600/fs.jpg Make sure to pass out coloring materials and decorating embellishments to each table group. 6. As each student completes their Flat Stanley and letter, have them come to the teachers desk to scan and email both items to their family member or friend. Make sure to have the student use the scanner and have them enter the email address, and attach the documents. This is the students project and they should be learning how to email and scan during this part of the lesson.

7. After emailing is completed, have students vote for one of the 4 Flat Stanley adventure books to have read to them after lunch. There should be cups in front of each book and the students will put a marble in the cup that is in front of the book that they would like to have read. Count the marbles for each book and make tally marks on the white board so the students can see which book has the most votes.
