Mental Stimulation a. Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or possibly even prevent) Alzheimers and Dementia b. Doing puzzles and playing games such as chess have also been found to be helpful with cognitive stimulation. 2. Stress Reduction a. Reading is the best way to relax and even six minutes can be enough to reduce the stress levels by more than two thirds, according to new research. b. Psychologists believe this is because the human mind has to concentrate on reading and the distraction of being taken into a literary world eases the tensions in muscles and the heart. c. Reading worked best, reducing stress levels by 68 per cent, said cognitive neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis.

d. It really doesn't matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author's imagination.

This goes hand-in-hand with the expansion of your vocabulary: exposure to published, well-written work has a noted effect on ones own writing, as observing the cadence, fluidity, and writing styles of other authors will invariably influence your own work. In the same way that musicians influence one another, and painters use techniques established by previous masters, so do writers learn how to craft prose by reading the works of others.

When you read a book, you have to remember an assortment of characters, their backgrounds, ambitions, history, and nuances, as well as the various arcs and subplots that weave their way through every story. b.
