One of Lisbon's largest developments, Praa de Entrecampos is located between the Campus of University of Lisbon and the city's central business district. University Library

The library plays a central role in the organisation of the university campus situated on the edge of the city of Aveiro. A free-standing curving wall characterises the western faade and expresses the reinforced concrete structure of the building. This baffle admits reflected light while a continuous horizontal cut at the third level assures (for those seated) a visual connection across the sait marshes extending to the horizon. All electrical and air-conditioning services are integrated into the perimeter shelving system at each floor allowing the ceilings to be left uncluttered and spatially continuous with the vertical voids which traverse the interior spaces. This configuration also permits the spatial continuity of the double curvature of the ceiling at the top floor.

Rectory of Universidade Nova de Lisboa

The site used to be remote a land of farms and desolate ground is the location of the Campolide Campus of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. With the former Jesuit School, it creates a public square of imposing scale and provides a three-dimensional expression to the entrapped territory. The program is divided into two distinct zones. Administrative offices are located in a slender tower overlooking Monsanto Park. Large scale foyers, meeting rooms and auditoriums are set at the base of the building, housed within a plinth that marks the difference in level between the public square and the school plateau. The rising tower has the same height of the three-floor School building. Its faades are clad in white stone with an abstract layout of fenestration concealing the many levels of the building. The public square and grand steps leading up to it are clad in the same stone. These more symbolic and formal spaces are carved and sculpted within the plinth.

Moura Mixed-Use Building

This building is part of the restauration of an old building that faced the square in front of the castle of Moura. The intervention meant to create new faades in some of the historical streets, while providing commercial space on the inside. The main feature of this building is the way the faade is constructed. By using simple openings, the architects created a faade system that tends to be very expressive on sunny summer days. In the interior, a public patio was created resembling a cloister.

Barreiro College of Technology

The site assigned for the School is located in the outskirts of the city of Barreiro. The location had at one end a dense forest of cork and large pine trees. There are some projects that cause a public reaction even before its existence, with a great deal of important matters to consider. This school is such an example. The inhabitants of this neighbourhood protested because they wanted a primary school instead which was transferred elsewhere , and because they feared the impact a building of large proportions would have, both visually and ecologically. Fearing that the trees would be cut down, they counted and marked every single one. So we gave the building an ambiguous character. On one hand it "dissipates" and accepts the prevalence of the natural elements, on the other hand it deals with their presence as an artificial element of abstract origin. This principle is highlighted by the constructive choices: big coal-grey block that, when sectioned, reveals a white interior.

The building is located at the Campus, outside the city. In the absence of a general order for the spatial planning, the already built structures on Campus seem to have grown autonomously, without apparent relation. The only obligations imposed were the number of floors (2-3), the relative location of the new building and the maintenance of the many (and beautiful) cork trees. The program contained classrooms, laboratories, lbrary, auditoriums, teacher's dens, administration bureau and management bodies, covering a rough area of 129.000 ft. We could not find an empty land parcel with the necessary dimension for such a big volume, so we chose to build on 2 lots, separated by the Campus's road. Given the autonomy verified in the pre-existent buildings, we wanted this new school to communicate clearly to its neighbour structures, thus giving the first boost to a broad collective vision, and the smallness of the available land lots forced us to a closeness with the existing constructions.

Canteen

The canteen is situated on the new Campus III of the University of Coimbra. Situated on the edge of the campus, looking away from the city and facing its main road ring, the canteen is the built result of a competition won back in 2001 by the Lisbon-based architectural practice, LGLS. Conditioned by a sharply sloping site and a limited budget, the project quickly evolved into a play of scale, space, light and colour that offers a surprisingly large and luminous interior wrapped in what at first sight seems to be a fairly compact external package. Public access is at the upper level. The building then develops downwards, generating its strongest external moment at the opposite end from the entry point, thereby twisting the meaning of 'main facade' and allowing for an internal shift in scale that makes the light-flooded refectory so impressive. The internal colour scheme, tied to distinct ceiling heights, clearly defines the internal functions and instinctively organizes the users.

Glicnias Housing

In a country like Portugal, where education still lags behind for most of the population, taste -like other matters- is still in that phase in which it requires some kind of reform. As taste affects the reception of architecture -as much as it does any other cultural production- this is also a question that has to be dealt with by architects. Ricardo Vieira de Melo, architect of this housing block in Aveiro, not only participates in the improvement of taste that is slowly and subversively sweeping the country, he also manages to produce exciting, powerful and non-conformist architecture at the same time. The rationale behind his undulating aluminium faades is both technical and aesthetic. They reduce noise pollution from a busy road. They reduce the bulk of the building. They echo and augment the dynamic movement of traffic. And last, but not least, they abandon the geometric rigidity of the modernist slab. And at the same time, however, these faades are engaged in altering taste.

Boua Housing Complex

This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL in Porto to create social housing for poor people. And even though it was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managed to create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting. In 1977 there where only two blocks completed. Nowadays, in 2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given to this complex. Instead of having only poor people living here, the low prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects and young couples to settle in. With four levels, each block present an articulation in terms of passages that connect the whole complex. Together with the housing units there is also commercial spaces and green open spaces.

Malagueira Housing

Here the architectural forms typical of the Alentejo, square houses painted a blinding white with broad chimneys and few windows, confront Modernist volumetric experiments, conferring on this part of the city a uniformity that is, however, subtly disrupted by a modern version of an aqueduct consisting of above-ground supply lines. Tempering what might otherwise be too "white and orthogonal" a site, this structure, arching over the neighbourhood, seems to avenge the absence of history that any city built from the ground up necessarily represents. Here, Siza's apparently simple mixture of typologies results in an impressive urban complexity.

Terraos de Bragana

The housing project Terraos de Bragana occupies an area of 5000m2 of the historical city centre of Lisbon. There is a great sense of responsibility of the architect to maintain a certain dialogue with the existing buildings and it results in a building that is at the same time very modern but with a lot of local inspirations and elements. The main faades are covered with stone Lioz and the blue tiles, traditional of Portugal. Behind the building of the street there is the other building of the housing complex with a very contemporary kind of drawing, catching the tremendous views, facing south to the river Tejo.

Located in the centre of Porto, this building has two separate apartments with a garden and a commercial area. A new construction has been cleverly settled next to an existing 19th century house, creating an interesting architectural tension, and a rich dialogue in what comes to architectural language and expression. The total area of construction is approximately 500 sqmt, integrated in a 800 sqmt garden.

Housing Complex

The block building unifies two previously separated sectors, and has four floors, sitting on top of two other ones for underground parking. The ground-floor was designed for commerce, the first floor for one-storey apartments, and the second and third floors for two-storey apartments, with access by a gallery. The gallery, a meeting place, has been dimensioned as an airway, and is mainly located on the North side of the building. It crosses the street separating the two units, and provides the constructed masses with the formal and operating unity required.At ground-floor level, the central apexes have been left empty, thereby visually and functionally uniting the two common areas.This design was an opportunity to realize a city by means of architecture, in what is most relevant in urban living: public spaces. Between family architecture and public facilities, a series of spaces were conceived, ranging from the public to the semi-private, from the open to the confined.

Housing in Matosinhos

This new housing project is situated in a mixed used area, with left-over buildings of industrial use, where small factories and new housing projects coincide. This part in the south of Matosinhos is being reconverted from industrial to housing destination. And this house embodies both sferes in its facade. The six floors heavy weight concrete construction is filled in with large transparent glass plates, to give it a light new modern image. The whole building is carefully set in its surroundings, and interacts with the street. The communal spaces open up to the street, with large glass windows. The private zones of the building are more closed, with a differentiating open and closed facade.

Housing Complex

Built in white reinforced concrete this housing complex is formed by two separate blocks connected by the mainly vertical access with the lift and the staircase. All the floors are composed by an external gallery that connects all the appartments allowing them to face the great views of the sea and to receive good sunlight. With a very simple and contemporary language this complex establishes new ways of drawing the housing complex in a simple and elegant manner.

Housing Block

This housing block situated on the western part of Porto, in front of the Atlantic ocean is a conceptual reinvention of the traditional urban houses of the XVIII century. Instead of a stone structure, here the structure is in steel but is completely visible and separated from the other elements. But at the same time there are traditional materials that were used on the faades, transposing the modern architecture into a more site related project.

The building of the College of Education of Setbal was inaugurated in June 29, 1993 by the then Prime Minister Anbal Cavaco Silva. In 1993, lvaro Siza Vieira was awarded with the project of the ESE. Two wings of the building's two floors fit the route of access to the lobby of the building, located under an axis perpendicular. This broad cross space is the core from where the galleries and the areas of greatest surface are accessed (Cantina, CDI, CRE). The complex, schematically an 'H', is located slightly elevated in relation to the adjacent agricultural land and is equally accessible from the existing path.

The Music School and auditorium - Conservatrio Regional de Msica de Vila Real - reuses the ruins of a former convent and is located in the main centre street of Vila Real. In five hundred and eighty years the troubled ground of the Convento de So Domingos was also a Hospital, a Military base, a hostel, a cinetheatre...Without any evidence of the old cloister, the South faade is new and parallel to the aisles of the church. The West faade was returned to its one time coarseness that used to face the rural fence.

a.s* attempt to find new architectural possibilities rather than adopt existing models. Forced to start from a pre-existing element (the old library) on the boundary of the University campus, they have positioned the building as a pivotal point so that it could create a new urban front. The way the new library is fitted into the city street is quite discreet; not that it goes unnoticed, but it is more expressive on the inside. The interior appears as a single space divided by a system of ramps. Connecting the two tops of the building, these ramps structure it, acting like a 'promenade architecturale'. The new library is a deceptive building, offering different perceptions at every step. Natural light plays an important role in this, as it is carefully controlled. Entering the building through ceiling openings, it creates different environments throughout the day. It rests on the concrete walls, exposing their raw texture and invoking the volcanic landscapes of the Azores.

The new Public Library of Loures, one of Lisbon's satellite towns, faces a landscape of banality. Building a library in a crowded place sounds reasonable, except that people nowadays are as much alienated from reading cities and their visual culture in a critical way as they are from reading books. In his choice of a clean aluminium cladding, Fernando Reis Martins correctly appropriates the banality of the post-industrial, whilst on the other hand, the wooden entrance 'tunnel' that traverses the library and defines its central axis speaks of comfort and welcome. It vaguely resembles the famous church entrance by Tadao Ando, as it also uses simple wood craftmanship to convey proximity and warmth. In the main hall, Martins contrasts these elements with the stark boldness of high concrete walls. In its use of industrial banality transformed by qualities of composition and precision, the new library conveys a sense of 'reading' with a new sensibility through readily available materials.

This small pavilion located between the trees in the gardens of the Crystal Palace has two levels with a double height vestibule. The library appears as an "objet trouv" in the nature, participating in this spontaneous environment. The volume resembles an old train wagon, lifted slightly off the ground turning it into a light and welcoming space. The used materials were chosen according to the environment, following the textures and colours of the nature. The structure and wall panels are made out of wood and the windows are sheets of transparent polycarbonate located at the height of the children with awesome views to the gardens. It's a building that fits perfectly in this natural environment.

The Escola Superior de Msica is part of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute, which comprises six schools (Education, Communication and Information Sciences, Theatre and Cinema, Dance, Music, Health Technologies) and two further institutes (Accounting and Administration and Engineering). The design of the school makes reference to the inner space of a cloister. "The challenge of creating an inner external environment with acoustic and living characteristics and of a scale hardly reachable in the centre of the city led us to explore, up to its limits, the relation of the building as mass and volume, and the programmatic content thereof, with the empty space of the patio with a size of 100 x 40 m. Beyond its use as a meeting area, this space will also be able to function as an extension of the classrooms and allow for the performance of small, open-air concerts. In general, the area surrounding the patio has only one floor."
