Arista means the properties of a drug that enables it to remain without decaying and losing its effect for a long time. Asavas and arishtas are liquid preparations. They are alcoholic solutions containing all the active ingredients of the drugs of which they care compounded. Thus they contain water soluble as well as alcohol soluble substances of the drugs. They differ from the official sprits which are merely alcoholic solutions of essential oils. Asava and arishtas differ from each other owing to their difference in method of preparation. Asavas are preparations which are subjected to fermentation for an allotted period with all its specific ingredients mixed with certain quantity of water, while arishtas are preparations which are subjected to fermentation for a specific time after boiling the main decoction substance and the adding other ingredients. Asavas and arishtas are prepared from fruits, roots, extracts, roots, leaves and barks that is they are fully herbal preparations. The jaggary sugar or honey with water are the other ingredients.
