n Improving the quality of life

For ILF Consulting Engineers, design projects are coupled with high engineering standards and firm principles. To stay fully in tune with our objectives, we strive to create better living conditions for large sectors of the population. Projects implemented by ILF must be highly sustainable, economically efficient and environmentally friendly.

Water is life
The worldwide demand made on both the quantity and the quality of the natural resource water is growing every day. In many parts of our planet, water is already a scarce commodity and often the actual demand exceeds the current supply. Water has thus become a limiting factor to the stable development of many countries.

services during construction. ILF is now recognised for its high standard of professionalism in this highly specialised field and the firms state-of-the-art consulting services are appreciated by clients around the world. ILFs capabilities in this area comprise a wide array of services from the development of water resources, through the treatment and transport of water in large transmission systems with pumping stations and water reservoirs to urban distribution networks.

Development of water resources

n Water resources development
The challenges and benefits involved in the development of water resources may vary greatly, depending on the local conditions encountered. In mountainous terrain, springs may be the logical choice as water sources. In valleys and lower lying areas, groundwater may often successfully be tapped using individual wells or entire well fields. In areas which have neither springs nor groundwater of sufficient quality and quantity, surface water from rivers, lakes, or from reservoirs, constructed for this very purpose, may be the appropriate solution. In countries with arid climate conditions, sea water desalination may often be the only way to provide drinking water in sufficient quantities. Regardless of how challenging and demanding the development of water resources may be, ILF is a competent partner for all water development and supply projects. ILFs clients benefit from the extensive professional know-how and the long-standing experience gained by ILFs engineers during multiple international project assignments.

n I LFs scope of services in this field consists of the following activities:

Hydrogeological analyses Groundwater exploration Numerical groundwater models Design of spring water intake structures, wells, river water, lake water and sea water intake structures Resources management Identification and establishment of water protection zones Environmental impact analyses

n Water treatment
As a result of the growing utilisation of natural water resources and the increasing pollution of the environment, water of inferior quality requiring treatment is often the ILF performs all tasks and services from the design of new facilities to the expansion and retrofitting of existing water treatment plants. Apart from the objective of ensuring maxi-

only solution. Different raw water sources and types of water use necessitate customised water treatment plants. ILF Consulting Engineers offer innovative solutions for any challenge in the field of water treatment. ILF possesses the professional expertise and the long-standing experience to cover the entire water treatment spectrum. mum availability, ILF also aims at minimising investment and operating costs throughout the plants operational life cycle.

n Water transmission and water reservoirs

Another major field in which ILF has become an international market leader over the past two decades is the design of large-scale water transmission systems. For the Jubail-Riyadh Water Pipeline System in Saudi Arabia, which pumps approx. 900,000 m3 of water over more than 700 km every day, ILF Consulting Engineers were the first to develop and apply the technology of a closed high-pressure system. This ILF system

n I LF Consulting Engineers perform outstanding services in the following areas of design and construction management:
Conceptual design, including system optimisation focusing on technical and economic considerations Environmental impact assessments and safety analyses Geological and geotechnical site investigations Optimisation of pipe diameters, pressure ratings and selection of pipe materials Computer simulation of steady-state and transient flow conditions in water transmission systems Design of pumping stations and control systems Design of storage facilities and surge vessels

Transmission of water
The extremely large quantities of water which are pumped through such pipelines for hundreds of kilometres require highly sophisticated facilities. The continuous reliability of water pipelines over several decades poses a special challenge to ILF Consulting Engineers which is to be addressed with every new project. The required long-term availability of these facilities is to be achieved simultaneously with a minimisation of investment and operating costs. is characterised by high operating safety at minimum operating expenses and has since successfully been implemented in a series of other large-scale water transmission systems. Water reservoirs are required at the beginning and the end of these large longdistance water transmission systems. With these reservoirs, a constant operation of the upstream water treatment plants as well as a continuous supply of the connected distribution networks may be ensured even in case of a temporary pump shutdown.

n Drinking water distribution

When distributing water to consumers, it is essential that the water made available be of the required quantity, adequate quality and sufficient pressure. A number of existing drinking water systems experience high water losses and addressing this problem leak detection investigations, a hydrodynamic network analysis is performed by ILF Consulting Engineers. The objective of this analysis is to increase capacity by rehabilitating and optimising the existing network while minimising construction and operating costs.

n Overview of ILF services:

Water demand analysis and prognosis Survey of current network situation and evaluation of structural integrity Water consumption analyses as part of pilot zone studies or on the basis of pressure zone inflow measurements Flow rate and pressure measurements Compilation of water balances and identification of technical and non-technical losses Elaboration of rehabilitation concepts Optimisation of network design and network operation by means of careful hydraulic analyses Assistance with preparation of water bylaws Analysis of invoice data derived from water rate surveys Water tariff studies and calculations System optimisation with regard to interaction of distribution, storage, production and water transmission Assistance with preventive maintenance measures and leakage loss minimisation

becomes increasingly important. Even today, substantial water losses in existing supply systems jeopardise the objective of ensuring a continuous water supply. When expanding or retrofitting water supply systems, priority is given to the rehabilitation of existing network components. Based on extensive system inventory data and ILF Consulting Engineers use computeraided hydraulic simulations of transient flow conditions in the distribution network to identify potential problems, prevent damage caused by pressure surges and to curb resulting repair costs. These analyses also include the optimisation of various pressure zones in the distribution network under different operating conditions.
