I will rate this CSR of ACI 8 out of 10. Because farmers are mostly illiterate having learnt the art and science of farming by assisting their family on the fields. ACI continuous endeavors to educate farmers have given significant benefits like 1.Raising the level of awareness among farmers on improving their agricultural output through application of new technology, encouraging them to share experiences with neighboring farmers and, in the long run, developing educated farmers. 2. 2. Give three examples of CSR activities performed by MNCs operating in Bangladesh. CSR is the foundation of Chevrons business practice and one of Chevrons cherished values. In all its operations, Chevron strives to improve the lives of the people wherever it works. Chevrons vision in Bangladesh is to work in partnership with the Government of Bangladesh and the state owned oil and gas company, to develop the countrys energy resources in a safe, environmentally responsible and efficient manner for the benefit of the people of Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, the company has been active in community engagement for several years in a wide variety of activities and programs that focus primarily on education, healthcare and social welfare. Chevron carries out most of the projects directly, though some projects are also carried out in partnership with leading NGOs in Bangladesh. It also encourages its employees to participate actively in establishing the companys values in community development by regularly participating in various projects. Chevrons CSR efforts are grounded in the Chevron Way, which outlines its commitment to conduct business in a socially responsible and ethical manner, support universal human rights, protect the environment, benefit the communities where it operates, learn from and respect cultures where it operates. Chevrons vision in Bangladesh is to work in partnership with the Government of Bangladesh beside that the company implements projects focused on school- and work-based career and technical programs, fundamental learning competencies like reading, science and math and training and professional development for educators. They are often done in partnership with governments, local communities, non-governmental organizations and multilateral institutions. Unilever strongly believes in the importance of empowering women in Bangladesh, because the progress of any society will be constrained if a significant part of its population is neglected and excluded from the benefits of development. They believe, with economic and educational empowerment, women can become more vocal about their rights and become stronger in withstanding repression in any form. So they have established Fair & Lovely Foundation. The mission of this foundation is to encourage economic empowerment of Bangladeshi women through information and resources in the areas of Education, Career and Enterprise. It is this realization that has brought about the Fair & Lovely Foundation Scholarship Program. Under this scholarship scheme, women who have passed their HSC each receive a Taka 25,000 scholarship to support her tertiary level education.

Nurturing the intellect and development of the children coming to this school can help build a strong example of conscientious involvement of the privileged society in support of the needy. 3. How would you evaluate the tree plantation programme of BATB as a CSR activity? How would you evaluate the impact of their business on the society?
British American Tobacco created supply chains in the 1990s to improve production efficiency, control, access to markets, and profits. In the 2000s, the companies used their supply chains in an attempt to legitimize their portrayals of tobacco farming as socially and environmentally friendly, rather than take meaningful steps to eliminate child labor and reduce deforestation in developing countries. The tobacco companies used nominal self-evaluation (not truly independent evaluators) and public relations to create the impression of social responsibility. The companies benefit from $1.2 billion in unpaid labor costs due to child labor and more than $64 million annually in costs that would have been made to avoid tobacco related deforestation in the top twelve tobacco growing developing countries, far exceeding the money they spend nominally working to change these practices.

Has planted and distributed 42.5 million trees with a sapling survival rate exceeding 90%. Has successful biodiversity program specifically emphasizing on water, air and energy. They have clear company policy which they communicate to their distributors, not to engage or sell cigarettes to underage vendors. They have stopped all the brand advertisements on TV. BATB Commitment - will continue to work with other third parties, including the government, in order to make improvements to our Youth Smoking Prevention (YSP) campaign.

What is social Business Social business draws on trends in technology (e.g., powerful mobile devices, widespread availability of high-speed Internet access, low cost of data storage), work (e.g., always-on culture, globalization), and society (e.g., propensity to share). Companies should care about social business because they can improve business outcomes (i.e., increase revenue or decrease costs). The core principles touch on all areas of a business, whether for businessto-customer engagement, employee-to-employee collaboration, or supply chain optimization. Making social business work requires focus on a companys culture, connections, content exchanges, and measurement and analytics. In Yunus' definition, a social business is a non-loss, Non-dividend Company designed to address a social objective within the highly regulated marketplace of today. It is distinct from a non-profit because the business should seek to generate a modest profit but this will be used to expand the companys reach, improve the product or service or in other ways to subsidies the social mission. Unlike traditional business, social business operates for the benefit of addressing social needs that enable societies to function more efficiently.Social business provides a necessary framework for tackling social issues by combining business know-how with the desire to improve quality of life. Therefore instead of being selffocused social business is all about others.

Distinguish between CSR and Social Business Social business and CSR have much in common. Both want businesses to take the interests of all stakeholders and especially the non-shareholders, while taking a larger and serious role in addressing social and environmental problems. Yet, there are important and underexplored differences. The differences between two notions, based on their purposes, structures, targets, profit related policies, compliance issues and shareholders

CSR
Profit sharing Profit Maximizing Project based /Time Limitation Social projects within the companys core business strategies Targeting general society / satisfaction of stakeholders expectations Temporarily solutions to social problems / non sustainable in general Devoting a small portion of profit Compliance with the moral/religious or legal obligations to engage in a social problem solving Shareholders and entrepreneurs bias on allocating profit on social problems

Social Business
Non-dividend Social benefit maximizing Company based/Enduring-Sustainable Social projects within the recognition of diversified social problems Targeting the poorest of the poor, or the ones in most urgent needs Consequences oriented-permanent solution Raising its financial funds Compliance with the selflessness to engage in a social problem solving Shareholders and entrepreneurs full support on allocating profit on social problems

Dr. Muhammad Yunus also differentiates CSR initiatives of profit-maximizing companies from his concept of social business. With reference to an organizations primary purpose he argues that a profit-maximizing company could only devote a small portion of its resources to a social purpose. However, microcredit is used to establish social businesses that are self-sustaining. Social businesses try to reach poorest of the poor companies aim to meet expectations of stakeholders. By their very nature, traditional corporations are not equipped to deal with social problems, whereas social business can exclusively concentrate on delivering social benefits. CSR projects mean cost for the companies and shareholders. Although CSR is valued by individuals, they would not bear that costs due to economic purposes of firms. Especially shareholders would not approve corporate spending on social problems when it is considered that a portion of profits are allocated to CSR. In this case, entrepreneurs would be responsible to pay all that costs. However, social business core purpose is to provide solution to a social problem. Therefore, shareholders or entrepreneurs would receive satisfaction to distribution of corporate profits to social problems. CSR efforts

usually focus very limited scope of social problems. In general CSR projects aim to reduce social and environmental negative impacts of a company. But, social business movement is anticipated to defy more specific social problems such as nutrition, child abuse, disabled. In addition; individuals who owned social business idea, are better than big companies at scanning problems that need to be overcome. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs are the philanthropic programs of companies. CSR is part of a corporation, which is a profit-maximizing company. A social business is a company by itself which is dedicated to social impact-maximization. A common way of practicing CSR is by donating money for social causes. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) provides a lot of good initiatives, but is a reactive process. CSR means taking responsibility for the effects of ones business on the surrounding environment. Known examples of CSR are saving energy or buying fair-trade products. The difference between CSR and social entrepreneurship is thus the difference between reactive and proactive. A social entrepreneur focuses his core businesses on creating social value whilst a Corporate Social Responsibility entrepreneurs tries to carry out his core business in a responsible way.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept which goes beyond charity and entails the company to act beyond its legal obligations. The act is to integrate social, ethical and environmental norms into the companys core business model. The act can be anything which relates to the three concerns that I have listed above. For example, Toms Shoes, a for-profit company based in United States, donates one pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased. Toms Shoes are not legally bound donate or act for social good, but still they do. The ethical concern of donating shoes to impoverished children is integrated into the companys policy. Thats how Toms Shoes have successfully managed to implement their corporate social responsibility by producing an overall positive impact on the society. On the other hand, Social Business is solely created to address and solve a social problem. The profits made from the business activities are reinvested in the company. Investors can gradually recoup the money they invested but cannot take any dividend beyond that point. For example, Grameen Danone Company, based in Bangladesh, is a social business enterprise. The business model of Grameen Danone is designed to provide key nutrients to the children of Bangladesh through yogurt which are usually missing from their diet. They do not issue dividends and the profit made each year is reinvested in the business. By that way, the money is being used for the betterment of the children over and over again. For instance if McDonalds starts to donate food to the homeless, it would be a CSR approach, but if McDonalds ever starts a full-fledged enterprise to resolve a social problem, then that enterprise would be called a social business.
