Tahlee Yichye, a sophomore at
Eastern High School, will soon
join the ranks of both Jewish-
American and Israeli girls serv-
ing as the first-ever U19 National
Israel lacrosse team.
With the official roster soon to
be released, Yichye said the
unique opportunity started with
an email from Sarah Meisenberg,
an Israel National Lacrosse play-
er, who extended the invitation to
her.
They scoped out players who
wanted to be on the team, Yichye
said.
Yichye said the search for Jew-
ish lacrosse players to join the
league was held on a national
level.
Her mother, Daras Yichye,
added that the team had very
strict criteria in choosing girls
from the United States to repre-
sent Israel.
They examined Tahlees
lacrosse games, made sure she
had a passion for Israel, and re-

What started as a project for
his bar mitzvah has turned into
an ongoing endeavor for 13-year-
old Clarke Horowitz. Participat-
ing in a Samaritan Healthcare
and Hospice in Marlton-based ef-
fort, Horowitz raised more than
$1,200 for Beads for Education.
It just seemed very inspiring,
Horowitz said.
In support of the Samaritan
Healthcare and Hospices sister
site, Kawempe Home Care located
in Kampala, Uganda, the hospice
began selling beads to help raise
money for children in Uganda
whose parents are too sick to gar-
ner an income, and therefore
were unable to pay for their chil-
drens education.
Joan Horowitz said her son
was taken aback after learning
that, unlike in the United States,
education is not free in Uganda
for children, costing approxi-
mately $200 per child each year.
She explained that parents who
come to Kawempe Home Care are
often suffering from debilitating
diseases, such as HIV or tubercu-
losis, and are unable to work.
He really thought this was a
good way to give back and spread
the awareness, Joan said.

Out and About Pet Services is
excited about the holiday season.
Last week it celebrated its third
year in the dog walking and pet
sitting industry. Out and About is
a Mt. Laurel-based company that
services Mt. Laurel and sur-
rounding towns, including
Voorhees.
Each year, Out and About Pet
Services holds an annual
fundraiser for the Voorhees Ani-
mal Orphanage. The Animal Or-
phanage is a non-profit, no-kill,
open-intake animal shelter that
cares for approximately 200 or-
phans at any given time (both cats
and dogs). The orphans are con-
tinually in need of medical care,
food and supplies.
Each year Out and About Pet
Services set a higher goal for par-
ticipants to attain. Out and About
Pet Services try to not only beat
that goal, but surpass it.
For example, Out and About
Pet Services first years goal was
to fill one SUV front to back and
top to bottom. With the help of
our clients, family, friends and
local businesses Out and About
Pet Services were able to fill one
and half SUVs. The following
year Out and About Pet Services
filled two SUVs completely with
food and supplies.
Out and About Pet Services
was able to donate approximately
900 pounds of cat and dog food
alone.
It is very important that each
of these dogs have a chance to be
let out of their kennel and just
simply be a dog. This helps im-
mensely with their transition
from the shelter to their forever
home. Not one of these animals
choose to be there and many end
up there due to unfortunate cir-
cumstances. Luckily, the shelter
has many terrific volunteers and
staff to make their stay as com-
fortable as possible. Despite this,
they are in constant need of food
and supplies.

searched to see if Tahlee was a
good-hearted, well-rounded per-
son and athlete, Daras said.
After receiving the email from
Meisenberg, Tahlee responded
and subsequently scheduled a
telephone interview with Meisen-
berg. Soon after, Tahlee received
another email. This time, it was
from the program director for the
Israel Lacrosse Association, Julia
Szafman.
Ive been there a few times in
Israel, but not for anything as
great as this, Tahlee said.
While the dates are not set for
security reasons, Daras said
Tahlees trip to Israel will begin
approximately on Dec. 21 and she
will return on Dec. 30.
During her trip, Tahlee will
train with the rest of her U19
teammates at Israels official
Olympic training facility in Ne-
tanya, before then traveling to
Warsaw, Poland, to compete
against the Polish and Latvian
National Lacrosse teams.
Even more exciting, Daras
said that during training in Is-
rael, members of the team would
also be playing club teams and
helping to teach the sport of
lacrosse to Israels youth, since it
is very new to the country.
Shes like an ambassador for
the U.S., Daras said.
Tahlee said she has very strong
ties to Israel, with her father
being an immigrant from Israel
and having a great deal of family
and friends living there. Her bat
mitzvah was also held in Israel.
I know Israel inside and out,
and Im happy to represent it in a
positive light, Tahlee said.
In addition, Tahlee is also in-
volved with her local Jewish com-
munity center at Katz JCC in
Cherry Hill, teaching gymnastics
to preschoolers and will partici-
pate in the 2014 Maccabi games
for girls lacrosse.
As far as future aspirations,
Tahlee said she has not decided
where she will attend college, but
hopes to pursue a major in psy-
chology. She also hopes to contin-
ue to play lacrosse on a collegiate
level and added that she could see
herself volunteering as a coach
for recreational lacrosse in addi-
tion to her professional career.
However, for now, Tahlee is ea-
gerly awaiting her trip to Israel.
Im super excited, she said. I
cant wait until December to
jump on a plane and go.
Daras also said she is proud of
her daughter and the significant
contribution she is making to the
Israeli community.
Its an amazing opportunity
and shes one of a kind, Daras
said. Shes going to be in the his-
tory books.
She also said that since the Is-
rael Lacrosse Association does
not receive government funding,
because it is such a young organi-
zation, Tahlees trip would be en-
tirely self-funded.
Fundraising efforts by Tahlee
have been aided by the associa-
tion, such as providing a letter
nominating her for the Jewish
Community Foundation Grant.
In the letter, Szafman outlines
what it will mean for Tahlee
Yichye to participate:
Tahlees time in Israel will be
particularly special because
young girls here are rarely active-
ly recruited for sports, especially
team sports, while there are
many programs for boys. In order
to empower Israels young girls, it
is important to have dedicated,
talented and enthusiastic role
models like Tahlee here in Israel.
After spending time here, Tahlee
will be able to act as an ambassa-
dor to her community at home by
sharing her experience and en-
couraging others to get involved
with Israel.
Members of the community
who would like to donate to
Tahlees trip can do so by email at
tollilolli1@yahoo.com or calling
282-7372.

For too many New Jerseyans, addiction
begins in the medicine cabinet. The New
Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs has
developed Project Medicine Drop as an im-
portant component of its effort to halt the
abuse and diversion of prescription drugs.
It allows consumers to dispose of unused
and expired medications anonymously.
I am pleased to advise our community
that the Voorhees Township Police Depart-
ment is participating in the program, and
the police station lobby now has such a
drop box available Monday through Friday
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The prominent Pro-
ject Medicine Drop logo makes the box
highly visible and recognizable.
This initiative builds on the success of
the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administra-
tion's National Take Back Initiative, and
the American Medicine Chest Challenge.
The initiative is sponsored in New Jersey
by the DEA, Partnership for a Drug Free
New Jersey and
Sheriffs' Associa-
tion of New Jersey.
Both programs pro-
vide single-day op-
portunities to drop
off unused medica-
tions at pre-identi-
fied, secure loca-
tions.
Project Medicine
Drop provides the
opportunity to dis-
card unused pre-
scription medica-
tions in a safe,
convenient man-
ner. Our police de-
partment will
maintain custody
of the deposited drugs and dispose of them
according to their normal procedures for
the custody and destruction of controlled
dangerous substances. They report the
quantity of discarded drugs to the Division
of Consumer Affairs on a quarterly basis.
The division plans to expand the pro-
gram to include police departments in
each of New Jersey's 21 counties.
Please take advantage of this initiative
and join the fight against prescription drug
addiction.

MAYORS MESSAGE
O
ne year ago at this time, com-
munities throughout New Jer-
sey were in utter amazement
of the damage that Hurricane Sandy
had done. Those of us who were lucky
enough to avoid direct damage from
the superstorm watched the videos
of the flooding in horror.
Hurricane Sandy destroyed peoples
homes, businesses and livelihoods. It
devastated our vacation spots, our es-
capes and our states largest tourist
destinations. It changed the way we
think about storm preparation, and
the likelihood that we can be heavily
impacted by what was before now
thought to be only a southern prob-
lem.
Over the months that followed the
storm, New Jersey rallied together
and fought to recover. The state put to-
gether messages saying we are
stronger than the storm. Volunteers
from all over showed up to help with
cleanup at Shore towns.
Slowly but surely, the federal gov-
ernment made grants available to help
us recover. Insurance companies often
made the process long, arduous and at
times unfulfilling.
One year later, we are still recover-
ing. Homes are still left unrepaired,
businesses have closed their doors for
good, and lives have been changed for-
ever.
But we move on. We keep on truck-
ing, as they say.
The phrase is played out at this
point, but it really is true that we are
stronger than the storm. Sandy cant
beat us.
The storm did remind us of how im-
portant it is to support our local com-
munities. We rushed to the Shore this
summer to vacation, and hopefully,
well continue to do so next year.
Local support isnt just seasonal,
though. In a few short weeks, youll
begin to see campaigns that will urge
you to spend local this holiday shop-
ping season, and its something that
you should definitely do.
Its a practice you can perform all
year round by shopping, eating and
buying locally. We all benefit from the
support.

The Camden
County Free-
holder Board and
the Camden
County Animal
Shelter want to
share the joy of
pet ownership
with our veter-
ans. To do that,
weve created a
new program,
Pets4Vets, that provides shel-
ter animals to veterans at no
fee.
We view this program as a
small thank you to our veter-
ans who have selflessly served
our country. It provides our
men and women in uniform
with companions that will
supply unconditional love to
the most valued members of
our society.
The program is open to all
active military, reservists as
well as veterans. Camden
County residents meeting the
criteria of the program will
have their adoption fees
waived. The animal shelter
will need valid military iden-
tification to waive the adop-
tion fee. If you are a veteran
and do not have an identifica-
tion, you can secure your ID at
the Camden County Clerks Of-
fice in Camden or at the
County Store in the Voorhees
Town Center.
Camden County loves pets,
especially cats and dogs. Ac-
cording to the last census, 70
percent of Camden County
households include one of our
furry friends. Now you can
adopt a pet of your own, and
can do it at no charge.
By providing this program,
we hope to en-
courage mem-
bers of the
military and vet-
erans to adopt
pets currently in
our shelter, giv-
ing them loving
new homes. This
initiative is part
of a wider pro-
gram of benefits
and services tailored to veter-
ans, including special Job
Fairs and Benefits roundtables.
In addition to this new
Pets4Vets adoption program,
the Freeholder Board is work-
ing hard to make life better for
all animals in Camden
County. In August, we an-
nounced plans for a $3.5 mil-
lion investment over the next
two years to improve the lives
of shelter animals and to in-
crease adoptions. This years
budget includes $2 million for
the renovation and expansion
of the animal shelter. That
project is already underway.
And, an additional $1.5 million
is projected for next years
budget for the construction of
a new adoption center expected
to open by the end of 2014.
The Camden County Animal
Shelter is located at 125
County House Road in Black-
wood. Please visit the shelter
if you are considering adopt-
ing a dog or cat for your family.

the program or the shelter,

By Freeholder Deputy Director Ed McDonnell
Freeholder Board offers
free pets to vets
A skunk removed from
Voorhees Township on Oct. 26 has
tested positive for rabies.
Recently, a Voorhees resident
discovered her dog had been
sprayed by a skunk on her proper-
ty. The skunk subsequently was
either killed by the dog or died on
its own. The animal control of-
fice for Voorhees Township re-
moved the skunk and arranged
for rabies testing.
On Oct. 30, the Camden County
Health Department was notified
by the NJDHSS that the animal
was rabid. The dog is current
with its rabies vaccination and
will be receiving a booster dose of
vaccine from its veterinarian.
There were no human exposures
noted.
Although rabies is a serious
illness, it can be prevented by
early treatment, said Freeholder
Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the
Camden County Health Depart-
ment. If you have been bitten or
scratched by a wild animal it is
important that you seek immedi-
ate medical attention.
Rodriguez urged county resi-
dents to protect themselves, their
families and their pets from ra-
bies by observing a few simple
rules, including acting responsi-
bly as a pet owner:
Keep vaccinations up to date
for all dogs, cats and ferrets.
Keep your pets under direct su-
pervision so they do not come in
contact with wild animals. If
your pet is bitten by a wild ani-
mal, seek veterinary assistance
for the animal immediately.
Contact your local animal con-
trol agency to remove any stray
animals from your neighborhood.
They may be unvaccinated and
could be infected by the disease.
Rodriguez said its also impor-
tant to avoid direct contact with
unfamiliar animals:
Enjoy wild animals such as
raccoons, skunks and foxes from
afar. Do not handle, feed or unin-
tentionally attract wild animals
with open garbage cans or liter.
Never adopt wild animals or
bring them into your home. Do
not try to nurse sick animals to
health. Call animal control or an
animal rescue agency for assis-
tance.
Teach children never to handle
unfamiliar animals, wild or do-
mestic, even if they seem friendly.
Prevent bats from entering liv-
ing quarters or occupied spaces
in homes, churches, schools, and
other similar areas where they
might come in contact with peo-
ple or pets.
When traveling abroad, avoid
direct contact with wild animals
and be especially careful around
dogs in developing countries. Ra-
bies is common in developing
countries in Asia, Africa and
Latin America. Tens of thou-
sands of people die of rabies each
year in these countries.
Rodriguez said interested resi-
dents can learn more by access-
ing the information available
from the Centers for Disease Con-
trol and Prevention at www.cdc.
gov/ncidod/dvrd/rabies/ or, resi-
dents may call the Camden Coun-
ty Department of Health and
Human Services at 374-6370.

and varnish, those who seek care
from Kawempe Home Care craft
the bracelets that are then sent to
the Samaritan Healthcare and
Hospices location in the United
States, in hopes of raising money
for their childrens education.
It just caught on like wild-
fire, Joan said.
After Clarke learned of Beads
for Education from his mothers
friend and hospice nurse from
Samaritan Healthcare and Hos-
pice, Susan Rogoff, he and his
mother soon made the trip to pick
up their first batch of beads.
Soon after, he had a number of
adults aiding him in his fundrais-
ing, such as the parents from his
traveling baseball team and fami-
ly members.
Beginning the fundraising in
September, Clarke said he has no
intention of giving up his
fundraising efforts even though
his bar mitzvah had already
passed.
This was a perfect way for me
to give back, Clarke said.
During his bar mitzvah, a doc-
tor representing Kawempe Home
Care awarded Clarke for his sig-
nificant contribution to Beads for
Education initiative.
In the future, Joan plans to
host another bead party at her
home sometime during the holi-
days, but has also reached out to
the Voorhees Township Public
Schools in hopes of hosting a
school assembly centered on rais-
ing awareness about education in
Uganda.
She also added that the Beads
for Education program is contin-
uing to grow and may eventually
grow from selling bracelets to
other items such as baskets.
Every time I go into the office,
they just get more and more,
Joan said.
As for Clarke, he said this expe-
rience has taught him the value
of hard work as well as giving
him a new outlook on education.
It taught me to value my edu-
cation and not to take it for grant-
ed, Clarke said.

for Education, contact Joanne

Drapes, wood blinds, sheers
or verticals......... It a dilemma
that makes for many calls for
HELP! Have no fear. I have got
a handful of great alterna-
tives to work with any design
style.
The first thing to consider
is the level of privacy and
light needed for the space.
This certainly will not limit
your product selection, it's
more that the architecture
could limit some choices but
not in all cases. If we are
planning a front living room
window that gets extreme sun
at some portion of the day
then you need a dual purpose
treatment. Look at Hunter
Douglas Silhouette sheer
shades. They are one of those
products that lets you have
your cake and eat it TOO.
They can be open and light fil-
tering then when needed
close them or tilt them to de-
flect the harsh sun rays.
There are many interesting
textures within the collection
from linen texture weaves to a
refined sateen cloth and col-
ors galore.
When we think about bed
or bath windows the need
change a bit. It's generally not
a space you sit during the day
so it could be light filtering
but definite need for full pri-
vacy. This can be achieved by
the product just mentioned or
may I suggest a layered plan.
That could be a fabric roman
shade finished with station-
ary panels to complete warm
yet functional window treat-
ment. For a bit of the old fash-
ioned approach but twisted
up a bit I like to layer a tra-
versing liner panel under a
sheer panel for optional light
control .This is a soft window
treatment yet can still have
an updated detail like a euro
pleat verses a traditional
pinch pleat heading.
One of up and coming
trends for window fashion in-
cluded fabric roman shades.
The Design Studio Collection
by Hunter Douglas features
cotton , silks and blended fab-
rics to compliment any decor
(even your mothers) and as
far as light and privacy op-
tions that's not limited either.
They are usually on the top of
my list for a space that cannot
be cluttered with too much
fabric yet a need for a soft
window treatment.
We have a full display of
these and other products at
the studio on Third St . Call to
set an appointment to see
them and have an interactive
computer presentation of
your windows showing vari-
ous options. It's truly amazing
and makes the visual concept
so easy !
