First same-sex marriage held in Evesham
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Sun
Linda Key and Susan Brown
made history in Evesham Town-
ship as the couple said I do at
their wedding at the Municipal
Building Oct. 24.
No other human ties are more
tender and no other vows more
important than those you are
about to pledge, Mayor Randy
Brown said just before he asked
the women if they take
each other to be their spouse for
life.
Assemblyman Reed Gusciora
attended the historic ceremony,
as he fought Gov. Christie on the
human rights matter.
Its important, it means equal-
ity, Gusciora said. Its no differ-
ent than the victories in the 60s
for civil rights.
New Jersey is the 14th state to
legalize gay marriage.
According to Gusciora, Key
and Susan Brown will now have
federal tax benefits they werent
afforded before gay marriage was
legalized in the state.
Gay couples, whether you like
it or not, can adopt children, they
own houses, they pay property
taxes like anyone else, Gusciora
said. I think they should enjoy
any benefit thats out there for
them.
We just wanted to do this for
so long, its such a nice thing,
Susan Brown said.
The couple has been together
for 14 years and has lived in Eve-
sham for 12 of those years.
When we bought our house in
Evesham, we got a mortgage for
30 years, Key said. Susan told
me when we got it, now thats
commitment.
The couple held a civil union
ceremony in 2007 and a domestic
partnership before that.
We did everything we could
along the way, Key said. This is
just amazing.
The most exciting part of the
wedding for the couple being
equal to everyone else, and not
being a second-class citizen, Key
said.
The two are excited to call each
others families in-laws and
making their commitment to one
another official.
The women are keeping their
own last names.
Were in our 50s now, Im
afraid we cant remember it, Key
said jokingly.
The two combine names for
Christmas and holiday cards into
Brownkey, we thought since we
were old we can keep the same
names we have now, Key said.
When the state Supreme
Court ruled over the weekend, I
thought it was and is the right
thing to do, Randy Brown said.
You have to follow what the laws
are in the state and thats what we
did.
Gusciora thinks Christies
move to drop the appeal against
the state Supreme Court was
based on national politics.
According to Gusciora, New
Jersey was one of the last in the
northeast to allow gay marriage.
Pennsylvania is the only remain-
ing state in the northeast to not le-
galize gay marriage, Gusciora
said.
Christie would have been be-
hind marriage equality. I think he
knows better, but I think he has
his eye on the southern states and
the red states, Gusciora said. I
think in 2016 it wont be an issue,
even in the red states.
Insincerity in politics may put
politicians at the back end of his-
tory, Gusciora said.
I think the mayor is going to
be remembered for stepping up,
being courageous and embracing
civil rights. Theyre the true vic-
tors, Gusciora said.
Key and Susan Brown will be
holding a separate celebration in
the coming months. The two went
out to Tarantellas, where the cou-
ple held their civil ceremony, to
commemorate the historic and
happy day.
I hope this helps other people
to be able to do it, Key said.
Were just really happy.

O
ne year ago at this time, com-
munities throughout New Jer-
sey were in utter amazement
of the damage that Hurricane Sandy
had done. Those of us who were lucky
enough to avoid direct damage from
the superstorm watched the videos
of the flooding in horror.
Hurricane Sandy destroyed peoples
homes, businesses and livelihoods. It
devastated our vacation spots, our es-
capes and our states largest tourist
destinations. It changed the way we
think about storm preparation, and
the likelihood that we can be heavily
impacted by what was before now
thought to be only a southern prob-
lem.
Over the months that followed the
storm, New Jersey rallied together
and fought to recover. The state put to-
gether messages saying we are
stronger than the storm. Volunteers
from all over showed up to help with
cleanup at Shore towns.
Slowly but surely, the federal gov-
ernment made grants available to help
us recover. Insurance companies often
made the process long, arduous and at
times unfulfilling.
One year later, we are still recover-
ing. Homes are still left unrepaired,
businesses have closed their doors for
good, and lives have been changed for-
ever.
But we move on. We keep on truck-
ing, as they say.
The phrase is played out at this
point, but it really is true that we are
stronger than the storm. Sandy cant
beat us.
The storm did remind us of how im-
portant it is to support our local com-
munities. We rushed to the Shore this
summer to vacation, and hopefully,
well continue to do so next year.
Local support isnt just seasonal,
though. In a few short weeks, youll
begin to see campaigns that will urge
you to spend local this holiday shop-
ping season, and its something that
you should definitely do.
Its a practice you can perform all
year round by shopping, eating and
buying locally. We all benefit from the
support.

Editors note: The following is an open let-
ter to Mayor Randy Brown.
I am writing this letter as an individual
homeowner in Evesham Township and not
in my capacity as an elected member of the
Evesham Township School Board. The
opinions expressed herein are my own per-
sonal opinions and do not reflect the opin-
ions of any other member or members of
the Evesham Township School Board. I am
speaking for myself.
You recently appeared before the school
board, with members of township council
in attendance, to express your view that the
school board, among other things, should
not consider closing the Evans school. You
stated many reasons for your views, some
valid and others somewhat misguided.
At that public meeting, and in numerous
private discussions, I have listened to many
people in Evesham Township telling me all
of the things that the board of education
should not do relative to the upcoming
budget formation do not close Evans, do
not apply to be an Interdistrict Public
School Choice district, do not raise taxes,
etc.
I know that you have heard these same
opinions.
Rarely, though, have I heard constructive
alternatives to all of these negative opin-
ions that are not already under considera-
tion by the board of education.
Well, there is one positive thing that I
can do and I have taken action.
I stopped by the school district adminis-
tration building and delivered a personal
check in the amount of $2,500 as a donation
to our district. While this is a drop in the
bucket compared to the additional $2 mil-
lion needed to meet the needs of the Eve-
sham Township School District for the
coming school year, it is a start.
Mr. Mayor, I challenge you, town council
members, your supporters and every Eve-
sham Township resident who is able to
help fill that bucket by donating to our
school district.
Now is the time for positive action in-
stead of negative statements. Be positive.
Thank you.

The Evesham Township Board
of Education will be receiving
$12,000 in revenue through host-
ing a cell phone tower.
The district has done this in
the past and already has a cell
phone tower at Marlton Middle
School, business administrator
Dennis Nettleton said. We are
constantly looking to increase
revenues.
According to Nettleton, the cell
pole will not cause any negative
impact on the surrounding resi-
dents or the students.
The pole is located in the bus
lot behind Marlton Elementary
School on Marlton Parkway.
What we have is an existing
cell phone tower from T-Mobile,
school board president Sandy Stu-
dent said. Verizon approached
the district, needing one in the
same area.
According to Student, Verizon
will develop and get approvals
from the township planning and
zoning boards.
It wont be close to the school
and wont do harm to the chil-
dren, Student said.
According to Nettleton, Veri-
zon is looking to expand its 4G
network in that part of town, and
they estimate that it will assist
Verizon customers with their
service.
There is no cost to build the
tower, Nettleton said. Verizon
Wireless will build the tower on
district property and rent the
space from the district at approxi-
mately $1,000 per month.
The tower has flexibility as
well.
This tower has been designed
to accept other vendors, Nettle-
ton said. They would require a
separate leasing agreement with
the district.
Currently, the district is facing
budgetary shortfalls, which has
brought about conversations to
close Evans Elementary School,
in addition to other budgetary so-
lutions, including selling district-
owned property.
Superintendent John Scavelli
said at the most recent board of
education meeting that the dis-
trict will begin next years budget
with a $2 million obligation for
salary and benefits.
According to Scavelli, approxi-
mately $1 million of that can be
raised through taxes with the cap.

The following is on file with the
Evesham Police Department:
On Oct. 29 at 9:28 p.m., an Eve-
sham police officer patrolling in-
side the Data Driven Approach to
Crime and Traffic Safety Zone
conducted a motor vehicle stop on
Route 70 after he determined the
driver was operating the vehicle
on a suspended license.
During the investigation, the
officer observed drug parapher-
nalia and a cut straw containing a
white powdery residue lying in
plain-view inside the vehicle.
A subsequent search of the ve-
hicle resulted in the discovery of
cocaine and pharmaceutical pills.
The driver was put through a se-
ries of field sobriety tests, and at
the conclusion of those tests, the
driver was arrested for drug pos-
session and DUI.
The accused, age 34 of
Voorhess, was charged with
third-degree possession of co-
caine, third-degree possession of
pharmaceutical pills, a disorderly
persons offense for possession of
drug paraphernalia and driving
under the influence of drugs. He
was released on his own recogni-
zance.

"We have a fundamental prob-
lem every year, which was true
last year, next year and the follow-
ing year. The tax levy cap is here
and unless that law is changed we
have to deal with it every single
year. This is our particular prob-
lem on the scope we're talking
about," John said at the meeting.
Sorry to cause you all this indi-
gestion, John. We taxpayers have
a fundamental, particular prob-
lem last year, this year and every
single year on the scope we are
talking about: the concept and re-
ality of ever-increasing property
taxes to support more teachers
and administrators to service
substantially fewer students.
I have the answer to your $1
million dilemma and your stom-
ach problems: cut staff and facili-
ties to meet declining demand.
The logical choice for the first
head on the chopping block seems
to be the superintendent himself,
to be replaced with someone with
innovative ideas uninfected with
bureaucratic tax-and-spenditis.
With lower taxes, families
could afford to live here, then
your declining student popula-
tion problem would be quelled.
Businesses trim fat to survive,
why not the sacred cow of the ed-
ucation machine? No, it is not for
the kids, that card has been over-
played. Get out the carving knife.
Bon apptit!

Burlington County Clerk Tim
Tyler announced plans for wed-
dings at the historic Smithville
Mansion for Nov. 12.
Given the enormous success
of several years of special dates
and holiday weddings, it is once
again my pleasure to offer cou-
ples the opportunity to exchange
vows at the Smithville Mansion
Tyler said. With the continued
support and cooperation of the
County Freeholders, the county
Division of Parks and the Friends
of Smithville Mansion, we are
looking forward to hosting these
events at this stately and historic
location.
There are a limited number of
appointments available for each
date so interested couples should
contact the clerks office as soon
as possible to schedule their cere-
mony. Nov. 12 weddings will be
performed by appointment, with
the first wedding at 1 p.m.
Ceremonies will be scheduled
until 5 p.m.
The clerk will return to the
mansion to continue the tradition
of Holiday weddings on Thurs-
day, Dec. 19.
Holiday weddings in the beau-
tifully decorated mansion will
begin at 2 p.m. with ceremonies
scheduled until 7 p.m.
Couples interested in a wed-
ding should contact my office at
(609) 265-5142 to ensure an ap-
pointment is available, Tyler
said. The couple will need to ob-
tain a marriage license from the
town in which either of the par-
ties resides. It takes 72 hours to
obtain the license, so it cannot be
left until the last minute.
Tyler regularly performs wed-
ding ceremonies for Burlington
County residents and persons
posted to local military facilities.
He has performed special date
ceremonies for Nov. 11, 2011 and
Oct. 11, 2012 in historic County lo-
cations and has held ceremonies
regularly for the holidays since
2009 and St. Valentines Day since
reviving the tradition in 2011.
Tyler has performed over 700
ceremonies since taking office
after his election in 2008.

The cell phone tower is part of
the districts answer to finding al-
ternative avenues to raise money.
The tower will be located with-
in the bus lot due to fewer buses
on the lot, according to Student.
The district was able to shave
a few thousand dollars by consoli-
dating bus routes and getting rid
of some buses. Might as well put
that extra area to good use, Stu-
dent said.
The district was able to save
$211,000 as a result of bus consoli-
dation, Student said.
ETSD is exploring solar oppor-
tunities as well, Nettleton said.
Solar would be two-way sav-
ings because you dont have to
buy the power and you can sell
back the excess, Student said.
Additionally, the district would
consider placing another cell
phone tower in another location.
The district is being creative
when it comes to revenue. It
makes sense to host the cell
phone tower, Student said.

Responding to the growing de-
mand for veterans services,
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly announced
that the countys Division of Mili-
tary and Veterans Services has
relocated to more spacious offices
at the Human Services Facility
on Woodlane Road in Westamp-
ton.
This is a case where the num-
bers truly tell the story, Donnelly
said. Our military and veteran
clients have tripled over the past
three years. And last year, the of-
fice processed more than $18 mil-
lion in claims more than any
other county in the state.
With the expanded space, each
Veteran Service officer has a sep-
arate office and can offer veterans
privacy to discuss their personal
medical issues, Donnelly said.
We also added an office for voca-
tional rehabilitation counseling,
so our veterans no longer have to
travel to Trenton for processing.
Space is now also available for
post-traumatic stress counseling,
and a conference room is avail-
able for group sessions.
The new suite also includes in-
dividual workstations, where vet-
erans can complete paperwork.
More than 4,500 veterans visit-
ed the offices in 2012, and 2013 ap-
pears to be on another record
pace, Donnelly said.
Relocating and expanding the
offices makes for a better environ-
ment for veterans and our staff
alike.
The new suite is located on the
third floor of the building.
For veterans with disabilities
and mobility challenges, the ele-
vator is within easy access.
Those wishing to schedule a
consultation to review eligible
benefits should call (609) 265-5008.

Drapes, wood blinds, sheers
or verticals......... It a dilemma
that makes for many calls for
HELP! Have no fear. I have got
a handful of great alterna-
tives to work with any design
style.
The first thing to consider
is the level of privacy and
light needed for the space.
This certainly will not limit
your product selection, it's
more that the architecture
could limit some choices but
not in all cases. If we are
planning a front living room
window that gets extreme sun
at some portion of the day
then you need a dual purpose
treatment. Look at Hunter
Douglas Silhouette sheer
shades. They are one of those
products that lets you have
your cake and eat it TOO.
They can be open and light fil-
tering then when needed
close them or tilt them to de-
flect the harsh sun rays.
There are many interesting
textures within the collection
from linen texture weaves to a
refined sateen cloth and col-
ors galore.
When we think about bed
or bath windows the need
change a bit. It's generally not
a space you sit during the day
so it could be light filtering
but definite need for full pri-
vacy. This can be achieved by
the product just mentioned or
may I suggest a layered plan.
That could be a fabric roman
shade finished with station-
ary panels to complete warm
yet functional window treat-
ment. For a bit of the old fash-
ioned approach but twisted
up a bit I like to layer a tra-
versing liner panel under a
sheer panel for optional light
control .This is a soft window
treatment yet can still have
an updated detail like a euro
pleat verses a traditional
pinch pleat heading.
One of up and coming
trends for window fashion in-
cluded fabric roman shades.
The Design Studio Collection
by Hunter Douglas features
cotton , silks and blended fab-
rics to compliment any decor
(even your mothers) and as
far as light and privacy op-
tions that's not limited either.
They are usually on the top of
my list for a space that cannot
be cluttered with too much
fabric yet a need for a soft
window treatment.
We have a full display of
these and other products at
the studio on Third St . Call to
set an appointment to see
them and have an interactive
computer presentation of
your windows showing vari-
ous options. It's truly amazing
and makes the visual concept
so easy !
