WELCOME
Shanghai is the largest city by
population in the Peoples Repub-
lic of China and the largest city
proper by population in the world.
It is one of the four province-level,
with a total population of over 23
million as of 2010. It is a global
c|ty, w|th |nfuence |n commerce,
cu|ture, fnance, med|a, fash|on,
technology, and transport. It is a
major fnanc|a| center and the bus-
iest container port in the world.
Shanghai sits at the mouth of the
Yangtze River in the middle portion
of the Chinese coast. The munic-
ipality borders the provinces of
Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the north,
south and west, and is bounded
to the east by the East China Sea.
For centuries a major administra-
tive, shipping, and trading town,
Shanghai grew in importance in
the 19th century due to European
recognition of its favorable port
location and economic potential.
The city was one of few opened to
foreign trade following the Opium
War. The c|ty four|shed as a center
of commerce between east and
west, and became the undisputed
fnanc|a| hub of the As|a Pac|fc.
Shanghai is a popular tourist des-
tination, and is renowned for its
historical landmarks such as The
Bund, City God Temple and Yu
Garden, as well as the extensive
and growing Lujiazui skyline. It has
been described as the show-
piece of the booming economy of
mainland China.

DINING
Shanghais restaurants are among
the fnest |n the country, ofer|ng
quality food and superior service.
The city has a plethora of food
delights focusing on the tradi-
tions of Beijing, Sichuan, Hunan,
Guangzhou and of course the local
Benbang d|shes. A d|nner cru|se
on the Huangpu River is highly rec-
ommended. If visitors are home-
sick for Western food, this is also
available in the downtown area,
rang|ng from trad|t|ona| Amer|can
dishes to fast food joints.
SHOPPING
Known as the Oriental Paris,
Shanghai is a shoppers para-
dise. There are various bustling
commercial streets and shopping
centers waiting for the shopahol-
ic. One of the musts for visitors is
the Nanjing Road. Huaihai Road
intrigues those with modern and
fashionable tastes, while North
Sichuan Road meets the demands
of ordinary folk. Xujiahui Shopping
Center, Yuyuan Shopping City and
Jiali Sleepless City are also thriving
and popular destinations.
NIGHTLIFE
Shanghai is fascinating for night
owls. The Bund is an absolute
must for visitors. The rippling
Huangpu River, characteristic
buildings on the west bank and ex-
traordinarily futuristic skyscrapers
on the east bank all become more
enchanting adorned in sparkling
colored lights at night. For those
seeking relaxation and fun, the
ideal choice would be Hengshan
Road and Xin Tian Di which are
thronged with a variety of night-
clubs, discos and bars.
ATTRACTIONS
Shangha| ofers many tour|st
attractions, many of which are
family-friendly, and range from
shopping districts to historical
landmarks. Many of these plac-
es are lit up beautifully at night.
Among these famous attract|ons
are The Bund, Nanjing Road,
Yuyuan Garden, Xin Tian Di, the
Shanghai Museum, the Oriental
Pearl TV Tower, the World Finance
Center, the Jade Buddha Temple,
Zhujiajiao Water Town, and Qibao
Anc|ent Town.
