TRAVEL
Uganda 12 Spending a month in Uganda was the most amazing month of my life (so far). While we were able to preach and share testimonies and worship alongside the most loving people in the world, God revealed himself through even the smallest moments in our days. Working in a country that is so severely impoverished taught me ;about not only the brokenness in the world, but about the brokenness of America. Money is just a cover up for problems much greater than poverty. My month in Uganda solidified my desire to be a world changer, even if only to a handful of people. 4wk long trip- Summer 2013 New Orleans 11 Through AGS, we spent time volunteering and researching for various projects. My group spent our time researching the education reform in New Orleans. Having the opportunity to explore the city was an incredible way for me to connect with not only the history that I have been researching for this project, but the current events going on so close to my home. By being able to have a hands-on experience with real issues, I'm able to understand that the problem in the school system in New Orleans isn't only a problem in New Orleans; that is only one example of an issue that is prevalent worldwide. 1wk long trip- March 2013 El Salvador 11 Through Riverbend Church, much of this trip was spent in a small colonia with our partner church in Siloe. We spend time in a colonia filled with broken down tin houses full of families of ten or more members, including some of the two biggest gangs in El Salvador, the MS-13 and the Calle 18. We worked to build a home for a family of 14 who had never had a true roof over their heads in that same colonia. While providing a home for this family was an amazing moment in my life, the relationships that I built with the children in Siloe are far greater. 1wk long trip- Summer 2012 Costa Rica 10 Through the Academy of Global Studies I had the opportunity to participate in various multidisciplinary learning activities that showed me the world in a global context. EARTH University gave me the chance to learn about living a sustainable lifestyle. I toured the Doka Coffee Estate plantation and production facility and worked in the fields alongside Nicaraguan immigrants. While in Costa Rica, I was also able to stay with, learn from, and volunteer with the Bri-Bri, an indigenous people to Costa Rica. 1wk long- January 2012 Heifer International 9 As a part of the Academy of Global Studies, we attended a global village simulation where we were able to, for a few days, experience the lives of those living in the poverty of less developed countries. We experienced what it was like to work for a small amount of money, trade with countries so we would have enough resources to make our meals and learned how there is more of a gray area when it comes to the rights and wrongs of stealing for survivals purpose. 1wk long- November 2010
