Whether swamp rock or surf-

out of style. The bands Creedence
Clearwater Revisited and The Beach
Boys, both of which are playing at
the Chautauqua Institution in August,
manage to draw crowds of multiple
generations.
“It was a great surprise, seeing three
generations instead of one,” said
Doug “Cosmo” Clifford, drummer
and original member of Creedence
Clearwater Revival. There’s a fourth
generation following the band as
well, Clifford said. “I signed a shirt

Fredonia Opera House to Screen “Food, Inc.”

“Food, Inc.,” the shocking documentary on America’s food industry, is the next featured film in
the Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House. It will be screened on Sat., Aug. 8, at 8 p.m.
and Tues., Aug. 11, at 7:30 p.m.
In “Food, Inc.,” filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on the nation’s food industry, exposing
a highly mechanized underbelly that’s been hidden from the American consumer with the consent
of our government’s regulatory agencies, the USDA and the FDA. Alleging that the nation’s food
supply is controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the
livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment, the film features
interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (“Fast Food Nation”) and Michael Pollan (“The
Omnivore’s Dilemma”). Also interviewed are forward-thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield
Farms’ Gary Hirschberg and Polyface Farms’ Joe Salatin. A real eye-opener, “Food, Inc.” reveals
surprising – and often shocking truths – about what we eat, how it’s produced, who we have become
as a nation and where we are going from here.
“With a constituency limited to anyone who eats, ‘Food, Inc.’ is a civilized horror movie for the
socially conscious, the nutritionally curious and the hungry,” notes John Anderson in Variety. “It
does for the supermarket what ‘Jaws’ did for the beach!” Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment
Weekly calls the film “more than a terrific movie – it’s an important movie, one that nourishes your
knowledge of how the world works (or, in this case, has started not to work).” Amy Biancolli of the
Houston Chronicle, calls it “a mind-boggling, heart-rending, stomach-churning expose on the food
industry.” Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times adds “suffice it to say, after the film’s disturbing
glimpses inside the meat industry, along with its blunt indictment of fast food giants, you’ll think
twice before eating just about anything nonorganic.” Rated PG for thematic material and disturbing
images, “Food, Inc.” runs 94 minutes.
Tickets for the Opera House Cinema Series are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors
& Opera House members) and $5 (students & children) the night of each showing. For more
information, call the Opera House box office at 716-679-1891. The Cinema Series continues with
“Away We Go” on Aug. 29 & Sept. 1.
Chautauqua County’s only year-round performing arts center, the 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a
member-supported not-for-profit organization located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. For a
