Character Profile
Hortaga is the last remaining Sorceress of the planet Venus. After losing all of her family in a battle against an alien race she decided to remain on the planet and try to create a spell to bring her family back from the dead. The 214 year old sorceress has spent decades developing and creating spells using the planets resources. The 460C average temperature of Venus has proved very useful in the creation of these spells, including craters spewing molten liquid that would boil anything in a fraction of an Earth second. Due to these craters only being found underground, Hortaga has set up her lab and home beneath the planets surface. Hortaga spends the majority of her life underground except for a short time exploring the space around the planet for space junk that could be useful in the production of her sorcery. Due to the fact that a Venus length of day is 116 Earth days, Hortaga has plenty of time to scour the planet for other species to use in her experiments. Hortagas motivation behind remaining on the planet is not just in the hope that one day she will no longer be alone on the planet and have her family back. If she could finally create this spell to conjure the dead back to life, she would be considered a Queen of not only her race but of the entire planet. She would have the most powerful spell ever created and none would not bow down to her.
Visual Concept
There are few films that I have taken inspiration from for my secret lair. One of these films is Marvels Hellboy. A scene in particular in the first film showing the enemy, Kroenen, sitting in what looks like his hideout/lair containing all sorts of mechanical and random objects. The room is built up of old rusty cogs, a centrepiece grammar phone and other strange contraptions. I thought this would be helpful for my lair as it could relate to Hortagas gathering of space junk that could be littered around the lair. Other films that I have taken reference from is Watchmen and Prometheus. The scene in Watchmen shows Dr. Manhattan creating an enormous crystalline clockwork ship from the surface of Mars. This scene would be helpful to look at because of the colours and lighting used to create the landscape, and also to look at other planets surfaces. Prometheus was also useful to look at for alien planets such as looking at the clouds of smoke/mist being produced from the surface of the planet. Due to Hortaga using other species from the planet to experiment on, I intend to include a lot of bones a skeletons in the lair. Because of this, a creative partner suggested looking at the Capuchin Crypt in Rome, Italy. These tiny chapels contain thousands of bones decorating the walls and ceilings with interesting shapes and patterns. This therefore could be something I could take inspiration from in the creation of my lair.
Hero Prop
The main idea I had for my hero prop revolved around some kind of staff/cane in which contained the powers to help Hortaga to create her spells. At first I looked at the staffs used for the wizards in The Lord of the Rings but started to think they were typical wizard/sorcerer props and would preferably like to go down a different route for my hero prop. So with that I looked at other shapes and props used in The Lord of the Rings such as The Two Towers and the Palantir ball that allows Sauron to communicate with the outside world. I liked the idea of this all-seeing stone built into the hero prop I'm going to create. This then led me to look at mystical pendants that I might be able to include. When thinking of ideas for my hero prop I also looked at Marvels Thor. This was to look at Thors Hammer and also Lokis Staff. Unlike the staffs used in The Lord of the Rings, these props actually show the powers contained in the items being produced. This is something I would like to show in the design of the hero prop in my secret lair. I also briefly looked at the Harry Potter series, especially the sorting hat and the wands. I didnt spend a lot of time at looking at these due to the fact that I once again thought that the wand and hat was too generic for a Sorceress and would rather have something more obscure.
