CARDINAL TAPE CUTS

Spring 2009

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK

Tom Weidner, PhD, ATC, LAT, FNATA

I hope that this newsletter finds our network of alumni and friends doing well. As I
complete my 18th year at BSU, and 24 years overall as an athletic training educator and
researcher I am honored to be included in such a group of professionals. A friend once shared
with me that to continue to be successful, it’s important to keep the passion which characterized
us when we began our careers. I hope that we energize one another, support one another, and be
there for one another when it really matters.

We continue to be very grateful to all our on-campus and off-campus Approved Clinical
Instructors (ACIs) and Clinical Instructors. Of true merit in this regard is Mr. Bob Helfst,
Midwest Health Strategies, this year’s recipient of the BSU Outstanding Clinical Instructor
Award (see article below). We are also continually grateful to Midwest Health Strategies as they
keep the dialogue open to consider new ways for improving our students’ clinical experiences.

We are once again proud of our students’ successes this semester. We congratulate Amy
Eagle who now holds the ATC credential. Many students are taking the BOC exam in June.
Kelly Kuker, ATC (class of 2008), presented research at GLATA and at the BSU student
symposium. Junior Tamara Moser was one of two students selected from the state of Indiana and
who was sponsored by the IATA to attend the student leadership workshop in Washington, DC
in February. She also received support from the School of Physical Education, Sport, and
Exercise Science and the College of Applied Science and Technology to attend this event. She
learned a great deal about advancing in our profession, while establishing a rich network of
professionals and peers.

Our ATEP was again innovative this spring semester in instructing and preparing our
students. With Dr. Lisa Jutte’s help we hosted Sandi Herring LAT, ATC, CEAS, Consulting
Supervisor with Advanced Consulting & Ergonomics. Her presentation/invitation regarded
numerous industrial clinical sites in the region for our students. Her presentation was recorded in
the media site facility in Teachers College and placed on my web site for our students to view in
the future as they consider this internship opportunity. Once again, Denise Fandel, Executive
Director of the BOC, participated in a video conference with our senior students in the global
media classroom. Denise and students interacted live as she gave an outstanding presentation
regarding the BOC exam. This presentation was also recorded and placed on our BOC exam
preparation web site.

Several of our athletic training faculty made presentations at the 2009 Athletic Training
Educators’ Conference in Washington, DC in February. Dr. Walker gave sessions regarding
standardized patients. Dr. Kirk Armstrong and I gave a keynote presentation regarding online
learning, and sessions regarding online clinical education evaluation schemas.
All three of us and Dr. Lisa Jutte also presented posters. BSU athletic training education
was front and center at this conference!

My textbook to be published by SLACK, The Athletic Trainer’s Pocket Guide to

Clinical Teaching, is currently in production and will be released at the NATA convention in San
Antonio. Every Program Director will be receiving a complimentary copy for adoption
consideration in their ACI training. Our own Casey Chambers graces the cover of the text,
interacting with a student in a clinical teaching situation. The Dedication reads . . . “many
thanks

to
my
athletic
training
colleagues
at
Ball
State
University
who
extend
much
kindness
and
encouragement
to

me.”
Finally, I was pleased to receive the 2008-2009 Outstanding Teacher Award in the School of
Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science, further enhancing our reputation within our
School and College. I wish my assistant, Tracy Ramos MS, ATC, well as she soon leaves BSU
begins an internship program at Emory University for specialized training as a physician
extender.

BOB HELFST RECOGNIZED WITH OUTSTANDING BSU CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR
AWARD

We are pleased to report that Mr. Bob Helfst has been selected for our Outstanding Ball
State University Clinical Instructor for the 2008-2009 academic year. This award is given to an
individual who has made a significant contribution to clinical instruction within our educational
program. It recognizes the dedication, knowledge, and professionalism that this person brings to
the advancement of educational standards within the Ball State University Athletic Training
Education Program.

Bob has been married to his wife Donna since 1988; son Bobby is 19, a freshman at
University of Indianapolis, and daughter Jordan is 16, a sophomore at Delta. He and his family
live on 10 acres in Dunkirk with 4 horses, 2 dogs and 6 cats.

Bob completed his undergrad in biology and sports medicine at Ohio Northern University
in 1986. He then went to graduate school at University of Indianapolis in physical therapy and
finished in 1988. Bob also has the CSCS credential. His work history includes three years at
Wellington Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in Cincinnati, two years at Hurley Medical Center
in Flint, MI, and 16 years here in Muncie working for Ball Memorial Hospital, Performance
Dynamics, and Midwest Health Strategies. Bob has given many guest lectures at BSU, IWU, and
Ivy Tech. He has managed Performance Plus, the performance enhancement program for
Midwest Health Strategies. In Bob’s free time, he coaches girls’ fast-pitch softball, weight trains,
loves horses, and consults on strength and conditioning at Union School Corp. and Delta schools.

appreciate that he is a master practitioner. What a privilege to have him associated with our
program for the past 16 years!

NOTES FROM NEAL
Neal Hazen, MBA, ATC, LAT, PT

Another academic and sports year is quickly approaching its end. The 08-09 year has certainly
been filled with many highlights that have brought significant recognition to Ball State
University.

Thank you to all who have supported the program in so many ways over the past year. We
could not accomplish the success with the quality sports medicine program we enjoy without
your support!

The Cardinal Sports Medicine Society Ring of Honor/BSU Athletic Training Alumni Reception
is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm on Friday, June 19th at Pat O’Brien’s in San Antonio.

At press time, the 2009 inductee remains unknown. The selection committee, which consists of
the Ring of Honor members, is currently in the election process. Please be on the lookout for an
announcement in the very near future.

I hope that you will be able to attend this year’s festivities and help celebrate our newest
member’s induction into “The Ring” along with enjoying some fellowshipping and reconnecting
with some old acquaintances and perhaps developing some new ones.

Please contact me if you are interested in serving on the advisory council for the Ring of Honor.
The primary charge of the advisory council is to provide guidance to the selection committee and
me regarding administration of “The Ring”.

Ideally, it would be nice to have a couple of alumni from each “era” that have passed through the
program. Your time commitment would primarily be limited to me asking for your time for one
or two conference calls per year, and feedback on any issues that might arise.

We are trying to more fully activate the advisory council. Thank you to those who have already
expressed an interest in assisting on the council over the past few years. I know who most of you
are, but please send me a reminder if you are still interested in serving.

I want to make sure you are getting these emails and newsletters. I will intentionally resend the
newsletter after Tom Weidner has initially done so; please let me know if you get the newsletter
once or twice in the next few days as we refine and combine our email address lists.

Please send me an update if your email address changes, or if you have a preferred address.
Also, if you notice someone’s address that does not appear on the mass emailing, please let me
know.

The Hazen’s have added on again! Lydia Marie was born on March 25 and was welcomed home
by her 5 sisters and 2 brothers.

I hope for peace and happiness for each of you!

Yours in Cardinal Sports Medicine,

Neal

FROM THE ATHLETIC TRAINING RESEARCH AND EDUCATION LAB

Lisa Jutte, PhD, ATC, LAT

Research & International Travel

This semester Kelly Kuker, ATC, ’08 presented her research study entitled, “Elastic &
Fabrifoam® Wraps Provide Greater Compression than FlexiwrapTM “ at both the GLATA
meeting in Ft. Wayne, IN and the BSU Student Symposium. We have several projects currently
in the works, which we hope to present at GLATA next year. First, Lorena Carither’s, ‘10
continues to work on her Dance Injury Survey and validating her survey instrument. Justin Farr
’10 and Lucas Dargo ’12 are teaming up to develop a case report on a posterior knee injury in a
football player. Dr. Jutte is currently collecting data on the effects of anti-histamines on the
signs and symptoms of eccentric muscle damage.
Besides inducing DOMS in her research subjects, Dr. Jutte has developed a 3 week Sports
Medicine Field Study in Australia. I will be leading 18 athletic training majors and sports
medicine minor student for 3 weeks, traveling to Lennox Head, Canberra, and Sydney. The
group will learn about Australian
sports,
the
Australian
medical
care
system
and
general

Australian
culture.

We will leave Sunday, May 10, 2009, and you can keep up with our
adventures by visiting our blog: http://www.bsusmfsaustralia2009.blogspot.com
As well, four sports therapy students from the College of Wooster (England) will be completing
an internship with Shawn Comer, Associate Athletic Trainer. They will be with us for about
three weeks beginning at the end of July. The students will primarily be working with football
camp. These students will indeed be amazed with all that goes into a successful camp! Perhaps in
the future some of our students may be completing an internship at the College of Wooster. Stay
posted!
ATHLETIC TRAINING CLUB ACTIVITIES
Tracy Ramos, MS, ATC, LAT, Advisor
Stacy Walker, PhD, ATC, LAT, Advisor

The Athletic Training Club maintained a busy pace this spring semester! At our March meeting,
Chris Gregor-Maxwell, MS, PT, ATC gave a mini-workshop regarding hip and pelvis alignment.
Our April meeting featured Shawn Comer, MS, ATC and Neal Hazen, MBA, PT, ATC, they
discussed how an emergency action plan is vital to a successful outcome in potentially
catastrophic injury. The students thoroughly enjoyed these educational opportunities provided by
these speakers. The AT Club assisted 8 students with the cost of attending the GLATA meeting
in Fort Wayne, and also donated $50.00 to assist with the cost of the GLATA student luncheon.
For some students, this was their first professional athletic training conference. Three of the AT
Club officers spoke during “Career Day “at the Burris laboratory on BSU’s campus. This was a
fantastic opportunity to share the profession of athletic training with young middle school
students. Also, the club took time out to have a little fun at Clancy’s Bowling Center; it was an
enjoyable time of bonding, bowling and healthy competition. Starting next academic year the AT
Club will be awarding the “Gary Noble service award”. This award will be given to a student
who exemplifies the spirit of service as an AT club member and student in the BSU ATEP. More
details of this award are forthcoming in the fall of 2009.

Elections were held for the 2009-2010 Executive Board. The officers for 2009-2010 are as
follows:
President: Tamara Moser
Vice President: Lorena Carithers
Secretary: Lauren McMillon
Treasurer: Jordan Hogan
Communications Officer: Lucas Dargo
Sergeant at Arms: JP Pizana
