Slavery was basis of economic life in the New World.

Many crossed Atlantic with new type of crops that reshaped diet. New diet. No immunity to the germs that crossed atlantic, epidemic, greatest catastrophe in human history. 10 million from old to new world. 7.7 million were slaves. Forced labor, one of the most brutal and unjust system invented by man and that is plantation slavery. Slaves possessed rights. Some enjoyed half freedom required to pay annual fee to company and work when called upon but they were given land to support their families. Settlers employed slaves on family farms or for household or craft labor, not on large plantation as in west indies. Slaves stripped completely of liberty in 17th century America. Richard Hakluyt wrote that the Indian slaves that belonged to Spanish were crying to come and help them, he wrote Queen Elizabeth I to establish colonies in the New World. Welcome English and criticize Spaniards for their freedom. English thought that they were unique and also that empire and freedom would go hand in hand. Servants that came from England to the were treated just like the slaves, they were not allowed to marry without their owners permission, got physical punishments and obligation to labor enforced by the courts. Numbers reduced drastically in the coastal Indian tribes due to disease which lent them to ally with the newcomers to enhance their own position with the rival inland Indians. As the white population increased, towns proliferate which lead to unavoidable conflicts. The fur traders will be killed by the Pequot in 1673 who were powerful tribe who controlled southern New Englands fur trade and exacted tribute from other Indians. A force of Connecticut and Massachusetts surrounded the main Pequot which was a fortified village. They set it on ablaze. Over 500 men, women and children were killed. By the end of the war most of the Pequot had been killed or sold in the Caribbean as slaves. This opened the Connecticut valley and showed other Indians that the newcomers were very strong and also they were not barbaric. Governor William Berkley had played corrupt for 30 years regime with the colonys wealthiest inner circle tobacco planters. He awarded his followers with land grants and lucrative offices. At first Virginias tobacco boom had profited not only planters but also farmers, some of the farmers who were former servant who had managed to buy their own farm. But as the tobacco farming spread inland, planted engrossed with Berkley got best lands leaving the poor farmers to turn into tenants or frontiers. At the same time heavy taxes on tobacco and lowering prices on tobacco due to overproduction affected farmers adversely. Poverty had reached a peak among whites in the New England. Favored Native Indians and did not allow the natives to spread among the Indians as he favored Native Indians. The spark was a minor confrontation between the whites and the Native Indians triggered.
