Rubric for Assessment of Tutorial Hand-in questions. Levels of achievement Criterion 1.

Answers Exemplary The answer builds an argument so the text flows in a logical manner, thereby helping the reader to follow the thinking behind the text without reading the question. The main points and technical terms are clearly described and/or explained so the reader is left with no ambiguity about what was written. Good The answer presents a number of points that allow the reader to understand the argument, but lapses in the writing may force the reader to make some connections between the answer and the question. Although the text is clear to informed audiences, unexplained points may leave room for alternative interpretations of the text. Minor lapses in sentence structure, such as runon sentences and unnecessarily complex sentence structures, force the reader to pause and reflect on the meaning of the text. Paragraphs present a complete argument, but may not flow so well. Any data used is placed in an appendix with reference. Well labeled axes, correctly drawn, with an explanation. Poor The text is not well structured so the reader must stop reading at times to try to makes sense of the text and must read the question to know what is being written. Questions are written or typed as part of the answer. Key points and technical terms are not explained so the reader is confused. Many paragraphs lack topic sentences or have poor flow so the main points and linkages among explanatory text are not clear. Phrases are used in place of sentences. Sentences begin with yes or no without reference to question topic. Data is printed and placed on first page as if it were part of the answer. Incorrectly drawn, not labeled, no explanation.

Sentences and paragraphs are well structured and clear so the reader can focus on what is written. Each paragraph has a topic sentence that indicates the subject matter.
