Related SOLs: 3.3 The student will study the exploration of the Americas by: b. Listing the accomplishments of Christopher Columbus Explaining the result of his travels, and the impact of the travels on the American Indians Essential Vocabulary: Explorer: a person who travels seeking new discoveries European: a person from one of the countries in Europe Assessment: I know that my students will have mastered my objective by filling out the activity sheet on Columbus correctly. Learner Considerations: Give Madelyn, Drew, and Sean a few extra questions on their worksheet. Go over the information with Ana, Jessica, and Taylor after class to make sure they understood the days lesson. Day 2- Columbus vs. the World Columbus discussion on explorers and Europeans Provide Zoom picture (activity) - Highlighting right parts in newsletter -Completing activity sheet on Columbus and his travels

Procedures: The Beginning (TIME- no more than five minutes) 1- Show students map of Europe from the day before. 2- Ask students Where is Europe? North America? What is this body of land (points to Atlantic Ocean) 3- Ask students What is a European? 4- Tell students to answer each question on what we discussed the day before. 5- Ask students What is an explorer? 6- Prompt students to answer the questions to activate their prior knowledge. The Middle (TIME- 15-20 minutes) 7- Give students an activity sheet that is divided into four boxes for students to write down each piece of what they see in the zoom picture of Christopher Columbus. 8- Show students top part of Zoom picture of Christopher Columbus claiming his new territory in the Bahamas. 9- Ask students what they think the first part of the picture represents, have them write down what they think on their activity sheet. 10- Tell students to write down what they see each time a new part of the picture is exposed. 11- Ask students What do you think this picture is about? Who do you think the person or people in this picture are? 12- Ask students to discuss what they think the picture means. 13- Tell students that it is a picture of Christopher Columbus claiming territory in the Bahamas. 14- Give students Columbus Newsletter that has a front on information on Columbus and a back on the impact he had on Native Americans. 15- Tell students to take turns reading in the class each section. 16- Highlight important parts on Columbus (Came from Spain, born in Italy, landed in Bahamas, went on a total of four voyages, found Native Americans, found gold and artifacts of the natives, was looking for a western sea route to Asia but found North America on accident, his impact on Native Americans such as the Tainos and they loved Columbus but he eventually forced them to search for Gold and if they returned without the correct amount they were to be executed) 17- Give students laminated world map.

Day 2- Columbus vs. the World

18- Pull up smart board of world map 19- Model the path that Columbus traveled from Spain to North America. 20- Ask students to draw that same path on their world map. 21- Walk around and make sure students have the correct path. 22- Give students homework activity sheet that asks questions about Columbus from the newsletter The End (TIME- 5 minutes) 23- Ask students Who was Columbus? What did he find? What happened to the Native Americans? 24- Tell students to make sure they keep their newsletter to use for homework if they need it. 25- Say Today we learned about Christopher Columbus. He was from Spain, and wanted to find a Western sea route to Asia.
