Introduction Protek Viewer is Proteks Application Software for its wireless test and measurement products which provides additional functionality to better use the instruments and manage the measurement results more effectively. Protek Viewer Overview

Following is the menu configuration of Protek Viewer. (1) Menu Bar (2) Property Window (3) Pop Window Lists (4) Chart Window (5) Pop-up Window (6) Right-Mouse-Click Protek Viewer provides the following functionality: Cable and Antenna Analysis (Offline condition). - Recalls and analyzes stored data in the PC (stored as *.tra format) where markers and limit lines can be used. - Changes display mode. - Converts traces (Return loss, VSWR, Cable) to Smith charts. - Distance to Fault and Smith Chart Analysis. - Zoom into a specific area of a plot. - Converts a trace file (*.tra) into a text file (*.csv) or a graphic file (*.bmp). - Edits a chart and generates printable reports. Cable and Antenna Analysis (Inline condition) - Performs all functions described in the offline condition. - Imports current screen of the instrument.

Downloads traces, graphics or setup files stored in the instrument. Edits, adds or deletes custom bands or custom cable lists stored in the instrument. Displays two traces on the same screen for comparative analysis.

System Requirements Processor: 450 MHz or greater. Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Home edition, service pack 2 or later, or Windows 2000 Professional, service pack 4 or later. Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later. Video: SGVA (800 * 600 or greater) 256 colors. Available memory 128 MB or greater Available disk space: 175 MB or greater Peripherals: Serial Port (COM Port) or LAN port for communication with the instrument. Basic Operations Open a trace file from the local disk of the PC. To open an existing trace files from the local disk of the PC do the following: Use menu bar command "File \ Open" to open a trace on PC screen Displaying trace information. Use either of the following two methods to display the primary information of a trace: Use the menu bar command Setting\Default Trace Setting and select the desired items.

Select the check boxes desired to display in the chart.

The trace information includes the following: Test set model number, series number, and firmware version Trace tile Saved date and time Measured frequency range Calibration status Tested domain Display mode and Limit setting status Loading a trace or screen capture data from the instrument. To transfer all the saved traces in the instrument to the PC, do the following: Connect the straight RS232C cable between the PC and the instrument. Make sure the instrument is ON and is making measurements. Select the [Load] button in the top menu bad and select [Load Current]. The trace in the instrument is shown in the Protek Viewer. The plots can be saved for future reference. NOTE: To transfer information between the instrument and the PC it can be used the RS-232C or the LAN interfaces as well as a USB memory stick. Download custom cables to the instrument. The Cable Editor edits the custom cables and sends it to the Custom Cable List category of

the instrument. To cable editing do the following: Select Cable Editor from the Utility in the top menu, it will display a dialog box for adding cable records. Each cable record includes the following properties: - Cable name - Velocity factor - Average cable loss at 1GHz and 2GHz Fill in the parameters of a cable. If you need to create more than one cable type, simply select [Add] in the dialog box. Select [Save to] to send the newly added cable records to the instrument. Changing the Display Mode To change the display of either VSWR or DTF traces, position the mouse on the chart and select the right button of the mouse, and it will show a popup menu in which the Display Mode option is available between VSWR and Return Loss.

Connecting the Protek Viewer Protek Viewer can communicate with the instrument either with RS232C or LAN interfaces. RS232C Interface To establish a communication between the Protek Viewer and the instrument via RS232C interface, do the following: Set the communication method to RS232 interface. Press [System] and {more} and select I/F type to Serial in the instrument.

Connect the instrument with the PC using the RS-232C Serial Interface Cable (Straight Type) Select [Settings] on the top menu bar and select [Communication] Select [Serial] with the proper COM port of the PC Select [Load] on the top menu bar and select [Connect]

LAN Interface To establish a communication between the Protek Viewer and the instrument via LAN interface, do the following: Set the communication method to LAN interface. Press [System] and {more} and select I/F type to LAN in the instrument. Configure the PC for a static IP with following information: - Enter the IP address: 192.168.128.X (where X cannot be 128) - Enter the subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Connect the instrument with the PC using the LAN Cross-Over cable provided with the instrument Select [Settings] on the top menu bar and select [Communication] Select [LAN] (Dont change the IP settings on this window) Select [Load] on the top menu bar and choose connect NOTE: When you change the I/F Type in the instrument, you have to reboot the system again in order to set the proper port setting in the instrument. Copying Image This function allows saving a trace as an image and pasting it to other office application programs such as Microsoft Word, Paint. There are three methods to convert the traces into image, as follows: Select [ ] icon to copy the current trace Select [Edit\Copy] Press [Ctrl-v] keys on keyboard NOTE: If you wish to paste the image to other application you must select [Graphical Format] on [Misc] tap in the Settings menu. Zoom in a Trace The zoom feature allows observing in more detail a particular portion of the chart, use the click and drag method to draw a square frame on the interested portion of the trace: Select the left button of the mouse and drag a square frame on the trace from top-left to bottom-right Releasing the left button of the mouse will zoom in the selected portion. If you need view the trace at its normal size, click the left button of the mouse and drag a square frame from bottom-right to top-left on the trace.

Export a Trace to an Image or Text File To export a trace select the graphical format or tabular format on Misc tap in default chart settings. In VSWR mode, the trace can be converted to DTF or Cable loss traces.

Trace Analysis Adding limit lines Select either of the following methods for adding limit lines on a trace: Select the right button of the mouse while it is on the trace to bring up the menu list, and then select [Set Limit Line] to add a limit line. To adjust the limit line, use the left button of the mouse while it is on top of the line and release it to the desire position position. Select the [ ] icon on the top menu and type in the desire limit line value. Turning off a limit line To turn off the limit line select the [ entry box will becomes gray.

Adding Markers To add markers use any of the following methods. Select the right button of the mouse while it is on the race to bring the popup menu, then select [Marker] and choose the marker number. Select the icon [ ] of the main menu. To move a marker, select the marker with the left button of the mouse and release it on the desired position.

To move the marker to a Maximum or Minimum select the marker with the left button of the mouse to bring the popup menu and select either [Move to Max] or [Move to Min] options. To set a delta marker, select the market with the left button of the mouse to bring the popup menu then select [Delta]. Deleting Makers To delete a marker use any of the following methods: Select the right button of the mouse wile on the marker to bring the popup menu, then select [Marker] and choose the Marker number to be deleted. Select the icon [ ] of the main menu. Converting a Display Mode To covert a trace data to any display modes such as DTF, VSWR, Cable loss and Smith Charter do the following: Convert VSWR to DTF. - Capture or load a VSWR trace. - Select the right button of the mouse while on the VSWR trace to bring the popup menu and the select [Convert] [DTF]. - Choose the right parameters and settings on the DTF Conversion pop up window. - Select [OK] Convert VSWR to Cable Loss - Capture or load a VSWR trace - Select the right button of the mouse while on the VSWR trace to bring the popup menu and the select [Convert] [Cable Loss]. Convert VSWR to Smith Chart - Capture or load a VSWR trace - Select the right button of the mouse while on the VSWR trace to bring the popup menu and the select [Convert] [Smith Chart]. Overlaying traces Overlaying traces allow trace comparisons where the traces are plot in different colors. The overlaying traces requires the previously save trace be measured under the same mode, frequency or distance. To overlay traces do the following: Drag & Drop: Select the title on the source trace and drag it on the destination trace. Copy & Paste: Overlay can be simply done by copy and paste. Click the source trace window to active it and select [Edit\Copy] or [ ] icon. And choose the destination trace window and select [Edit\Paste] or [ ] icon. Maximum 6different traces can be overlaid in one screen.

To Remove one the overlaid traces the select [Edit\Select Data\Undo] or click the right mouse button and choose [Select Data\Undo]

Reports and Printing Print the traces Protek Viewer has the following printing capabilities: To print one or more plots, select [Print] from the File menu, or select the [ on the top menu. - Print Current Plot: Prints the current active plot. - Print all Plots: Prints all open plots. Reporting Protek Viewer has the following reporting capabilities: Select the right button of the mouse while on the trace and select [Report]. Fill in all of the necessary information of the print chart window. ] icon

Select the [Print] button.

Customizing Plots The charts main title and sub tile text can be easily changed. To do this; Double click on the main title and the following popup window will be displayed, where new titles and subtitles can be defined. Select the right button of the mouse on the charter window to bring the popup menu and the select [Graph Title]

Program Preference Default Chart Settings Plot Scaling: Plots can be displayed at their original scaling when they were saved, or auto-scaled to provide the best vertical fit. Measurement Unit: Performs Distance-to-fault conversion in feet, meters or Auto. (Auto will set the original measurement unit of the instrument. Plot/Limit Line Width: The normal (thin line) option provides the most accurate representation of plot data. Selecting the thick line option will make the plot data and limit line easier to see. The default setting is Normal. Plot Footer: Additional information can be displayed at the bottom of the plot.

Miscellaneous Setting Clipboard formats: Protek Viewer supports the standard MS window clipboard operation. - Graphical Format: Copy the plot data as a graph and paste it into a document such as Microsoft Word. - Tabular format: Copy the plot raw data and paste it into a document such as Microsoft Excel to analyze the plot data with a spreadsheet program. Unsaved Plot Warning: Protek Viewer prompts to save the plot before closing if: - The plot is newly captured and unsaved. - The plot has been modified and has not been saved. Marker Panel: Specifies the Marker Panel position.

User Info Setting The user information is a predefined content used for the report generator. A company name and logo as well as the users name can be defined.

Prefix/Postfix setting A predefined prefix and postfix in the sub title can be created, as follows.
