Azalea Park
Park hours are 6AM to 9PM. Azalea Park consists of 23 acres of level land located off Old Lynchburg Road at the southern edge of the City near Interstate 64. The City secured the land in two acquisitions from the Bellmead Corporation in 1965. On the north side of the property are trees and natural buffers which separate the park from neighborhood homes. On the south side is Moore's Creek, which adds to Azalea's unusual charm as it winds its way along the entire length of the park. There are two paved parking areas and recreational facilities include Junior League softball field, a concession stand, basketball courts, swing sets, and playground. There is a stepping stone ford to the Rivanna Trail system at the south end of the community gardens. There are 2.5 acres of garden plots which are rented to area residents. For information on renting a plot, call (434) 970-3592. A fenced-in area is provided for off-leash dog activities. Dogs must remain under voice control. Dog owners need to clean up after their dogs; a plastic bag dispenser is provided for cleaning up dog waste.

Fifeville Park
Park hours are 6AM to 9PM Fifeville Park is a neighborhood park of only 0.66 acres located within Grove Street, Spring Street and King Street. The land for the park was a gift of H.W. Walsh and five other trustees who in 1949 formally set it aside for the residents of the Fifeville District. The fenced-in park land rises above the surrounding streets and contains a basketball court, a shelter and playground. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Zone 7 Permit Parking is available on the street.

Greenleaf Park
Park hours are 6AM to 9PM Greenleaf Park consists of 14 acres of grassy hillsides with hardwood and evergreen trees in a fenced-in area. It is located on Rose Hill Drive at Greenleaf Lane and off-street parking is provided. The land was part of McIntire Park until the construction of Route 250 Bypass cut it off from the rest of the park. At that time it became a neighborhood park with its own identity. Greenleaf offers a playground area, summertime spray shower, a picnic shelter with restrooms, and a half-basketball court. An Interpretive Trail Guide is available at the brochure box to help you identify trees. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control.

Lee Park
Lee Park contains all of the land bounded by Jefferson Street, First Street N.E., Market Street and Second Street N.E. The land was donated to the City by Paul Goodloe McIntire in memory of his parents in 1917 to be used as a public park. Dominating the park at its highest point stands an imposing equestrian monument to Robert E. Lee. The statue was conceived by Henry M. Shrady, completed by Leo Lentelli, and presented by Mr. McIntire to the City in 1924. The 1.04 acres of raised land provides a pleasant

lunchtime oasis in the downtown area, with many benches, a number of checker/chess tables, and colorful flowers and shrubbery. Lee Park, as well as Jackson Park, are part of the Virginia Civil War Trails. Both parks also host the annual Governor Jefferson's Thanksgiving Festival with Revolutionary era reenactments and displays.

Meade Park
The park is open 6AM to 9PM Meade Park is located at the corner of Meade Avenue and Chesapeake Street and is 5.2 acres in size. Meade is best known for Onesty Swimming Pool. The pool beautifully overlooks a stream dotted with weeping willows. The pool opened to the public in 1975 and is named in honor of Louis A. Onesty, known as the "Father of Swimming" in Charlottesville for his selfless dedication to the City's youth swimming programs. The complex includes a large lighted outdoor pool, wading pool, showers, restrooms and locker facilities. The park also has a playground, basketball court, a non-official softball field and a picnic shelter. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Off-street parking is provided.

Pen Park
Pen Park, which borders East Rio Road, is often referred to as the "gem" of the City park system. Pen Park is the largest park in the City and it is from this park that Park Street takes its name. Although it is a relatively young recreational area, the park offers excellent leisure facilities. This area of land has kept its name for more than 200 years; by 1979 the city acquired the last of the park's 280 acres. In addition to sweeping vistas of mountains and open rolling land in all directions, the park offers recreational opportunities for all ages. There are 8 tennis courts, a Little League baseball field, batting cage, volleyball court, 3 outdoor picnic shelters, and a playground for children. There is the 9-hole Meadowcreek Golf Course with clubhouse and pro shop and an outdoor physical fitness course with 20 exercise stations winding through the natural setting toward the Rivanna River and back. This course has been adapted for the blind and handicapped, as well as non-handicapped individuals of all ages to use. Dogs are allowed but only on-leash in the park (and are not allowed on the golf course). Small children, teenagers and families gather to enjoy the recreation center, tennis courts, life-size chess board, lighted basketball courts, softball/soccer fields, large sprinkler shower and extensive playground equipment. Originally acquired in 1946, by 1978 the park was expanded to its present size of 7.4 acres. The park is named after Benjamin Tonsler, a local educator during segregation. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Off-street parking is provided by the tennis courts and in front of the recreation center.

Bailey Mini-Park
Bailey Mini-Park is a small, quaint landscaped area located at the corner of U.S. 250 Bypass

and Hillcrest Road. A park bench and tall trees offers a shady location for lunch to those within walking distance of the park. The 0.33 acres of land were given to the city by Jon Bailey in 1979 to be used as a park dedicated to the memory of his parents, Annie Mae and Tilly Bailey. There is no adjacent parking available but there is limited on-street parking in the neighborhood.

Forest Hills Park

The park is open 6AM to 9PM Lofty oak trees and a magnificent view of Carter's Mountain highlight the 7.35 acres of rolling land which make up this popular park, which was originally known as Forest Park. Located on Forest Hills Avenue, the City acquired the property from J. Hubert and Dorothy Carver in 1955. Today there are extensively developed activity areas for individuals of all ages. A Little League baseball field and a concession stand lie at the lowest end of the site near the paved parking area. On the hillside slopes nearby are a number of picnic facilities, including a picnic shelter and outdoor grills. On the promontory ridge is an abundance of playground equipment, including slides, swing sets, a merry-go-round, animal rockers, and a horseshoe pit. At the head of the valley is a large flat area containing two full basketball courts and two wading pools with a swing set. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control.

Jackson Park
Park hours are 6AM to 9PM Jackson Park consists of 0.4 acres and includes all of the property bordered by Jefferson Street, Fourth Street N.E., High Street and the Albemarle County Court Building. This property, once known as "McKee's Row", was deeded to the City by Paul Goodloe McIntire in 1919 to be used as a park. A narrow lane which once ran between the County Court Building and the park property was called McKee's Lane. A large equestrian monument of Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, by Charles Keck, is the focal point of the park. The monument was presented by Mr. McIntire as a gift to the city in 1921 and is ranked as one of the three best equestrian statues in the world. The park also contains well-maintained flower beds and a number of benches. Jackson Park, as well as Lee Park, are part of the Virginia Civil War Trails. Park facilities include half-court basketball, playground and benches. Dogs must be kept on leash. Parking is available on the street.

Meadowcreek
Originally acquired in 1963 as a park, Meadowcreek has since evolved into a set of 73 community garden plots where residents can rent space to grow flowers and vegetables. The remainder of the 20 acre park has been left undeveloped. The gardens are located off Morton Drive near the intersection of Emmet Street and U.S. 250 Bypass behind the English Inn. Meadow Creek meanders through the woods along the entire southeastern portion of the park. For information on renting a plot, call (434) 970-3592.

Two Little League baseball fields, a concession stand with restrooms and two soccer fields comprise the recreational amenities. Off-street parking is also provided. The park has views of the nearby mountains and derives its name from the road that once led to an old stone quarry. Quarry

Park is part of the Rivanna Trail, a system of foot trails in and around the City and maintained by the nonprofit Rivanna Trails Foundation. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control.

Rothwell Park
The smallest park in Charlottesville at only 0.1 acre, Rothwell Park is located at the corner of Ninth and East Market Streets, next to the Downtown Recreation Center. The property is comprised of three acquisitions made by the City from various owners between 1960 and 1971. The City built the park with the assistance of the Blue Ridge Home Builders Association as a memorial to Mr. Stuart Rothwell. In the center stands an historic water trough, one of four the City installed during the latter half of the 1800s. This particular ornamental trough originally stood at the south end of Belmont Bridge and was designed to provide water for horses and dogs as well as for people.

Washington Park

The sloping land drops suddenly and spectacularly to a level plain far below where a regulation softball field, a basketball court and a multi-use field are located. The land was deeded to the City in 1926 by Paul Goodloe McIntire to be used as a public park and playground. The new playground and picnic shelter were given to the City by the Dave Matthews Band. The drainage, seeding and grading for the third phase of the Washington Park renovations were funded by a generous grant by the Perry Foundation. Dogs are allowed off-leash but must remain under voice control. Dog owners are required by city code to clean up after their dogs; a plastic bag dispenser is provided for cleaning up dog waste. There are parking lots at both upper and lower levels.

McIntire Park
Park hours are 6AM to 10PM McIntire Park contains land originally donated by Paul Goodloe McIntire and continues to be one of the most popular parks in the City. Located off of U.S. Route 250 Bypass, it features rolling land with magnificent views of the mountains to the east, a heavily wooded area with steep and varied topography and winding streams. There is a major community focus on the lighted softball fields, baseball field, and the three shelters which are used extensively from spring to fall. In April every year McIntire Park hosts the carnival for the Annual Dogwood Festival. In the southeastern half of the park, to the east of the railroad tracks, lies a nine-hole sand green golf course. This section of the park has its own parking lot and offers a playground and wading pool. McIntire park was originally larger than its current size. The construction of the bypass ran through the park, with one section becoming what is now Greenleaf Park. Another section, at the northeast end of McIntire Road near the rescue squad, initially became tennis courts and more recently has been converted into a skateboard park. The adjacent Rivanna Greenbelt trail provides opportunities for walking, jogging, bicycling, fishing or simply observing wildlife Dogs are allowed off-leash at this park provided that they remain under voice control. City code requires owners to clean up after their pets! A dispenser/waste receptacle near the kiosk provides dog owners with plastic waste removal bags for this purpose.

Rivanna Greenbelt
The Rivanna Greenbelt is a handicapped-accessible paved trail that starts at Riverview Park and meanders north about 1.25 miles to Free Bridge / Route 250 East (at the base of Pantops) along the Rivanna river. The Greenbelt is actually a public right-of-way across private property but it is maintained by Parks and Grounds; please respect the adjacent private property by staying on the trail. DOWNTOWN MALL
The Downtown Mall is a vibrant collection of more than 120 shops and 30 restaurants (many with outdoor cafes) housed in the historic buildings on and around old Main Street. This shopping center is at the heart of downtown Charlottesville and offers primarily specialty shops and restaurants on a brick walkway amid old brick buildings. An ice skating rink and movie theater complex offer entertainment for those people less inclined to shop or you might simply relax under magnificent trees along the red bricked mall.
