About Chemical Safety

About Material Some of the chemicals used with this instrument may be listed as hazardous by their
Safety Data Sheets manufacturer. When hazards exist warnings are prominently displayed on the labels
(MSDSs) of all chemicals.
Chemical manufacturers supply a current Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before
or with shipments of hazardous chemicals to new customers and with the first
shipment of a hazardous chemical after an MSDS update. MSDSs provide you with
the safety information you need to store, handle, transport, and dispose of the
chemicals safely.
We strongly recommend that you replace the MSDSs in your files each time you
receive one packaged with hazardous chemicals.
! WARNING CHEMICAL HAZARD. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the MSDSs before
using reagents or solvents.

About Waste As the generator of potentially hazardous waste, it is your responsibility to:
Disposal Characterize the waste generated with your applications, by analysis if necessary

Ensure the health and safety of all personnel in your laboratory

Ensure that the instrument waste is stored, transferred, transported, and disposed
of according to all local, state/provincial, or national regulations.

Note Radioactive or biohazardous materials may required special handling, and disposal
limitations may apply.

Chemical Hazard ! WARNING CHEMICAL HAZARD. Some of the chemicals used with Applied Biosystems
Warning instruments are potentially hazardous and can cause injury, illness or death.

200 to 229
230 to 240

Australia

60 Hz 1%
50 Hz 1%

11.2

50 Hz 1%

Power Line The electrical receptacle must have a dedicated 2.5 kVA power line and ground.
Electrical Outlets The instrument requires a 30 amp receptacle to match one of the two power cord
configurations that ship with the system. See the Power Cords section below.
The electrical receptacle must be located within 3 m (10 ft) of the back of the
instrument. Do not use extension cords.
IMPORTANT Despite the apparent dissimilarity between the capacity requirements for the
power line (2.5 KVA) and the receptacle (30 A), these are the system requirements.

Power Rating This instrument is rated for a maximum input of 2500 VA.
Power Cords In the USA, Canada, and Japan, the instrument is supplied with a detachable cord
equipped with a Nema L6-30P plug.
In Europe and Australia, the instrument is supplied with a detachable electrical cord
equipped with an IEC 309 plug.
The computer, CPU and monitor, can be plugged into any standard electrical
receptacles after they have been configured for the proper voltage.

Grounding Certain types of electrical noise are greatly exaggerated by poor or improper electrical
ground connections. To prevent these problems, it is very important to have a
dedicated ground line between the instrument and the buildings main electrical
service.

Power Line In areas where the supplied power is subject to voltage fluctuations that exceed 10%
Regulator of the nominal voltage (see the section, Power, above) a power line regulator may be
required. High or low voltages can have adverse effects on the electronic components
of the instrument.

2-14 Site Preparation

Voltage Spikes Short-duration, high-voltage spikes often cause random failures in

microprocessor-controlled instrumentation. These spikes can be caused by other
devices using the same power source (refrigerators, air conditioners, and centrifuges)
or by outside influences such as lightning. A dedicated line and ground between the
instrument and the buildings main electrical service will prevent such problems.
If your environment contains devices that are electrically noisy, or you are in an area
with frequent electrical storms, a line conditioner with a recommended capacity of
1.0 kVA will enhance the reliability of your system.

Power Outages The instrument has not been designed to continue with a run after power failure. A run
that has been interrupted by power failure must be restarted. For this reason, we
recommend that you protect against power outage by installing an uninterruptible
power supply (UPS) with an output capacity of 2.5 kVA (30 minutes at 2.4 kVA after
full charge). We recommend the UPS from Franek Company. The order number for
the appropriate UPS is FT1-B3100-DA. Franeks phone number is 1-800-326-6480,
their fax number is 714-554-6957, their website is www.Franek-tech.com, and their
e:mail address is sales@Franek.tech.com.

Electric Shock ! WARNING ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD. Severe electrical shock, which could cause
Warning physical injury or death, can result from working on an instrument when the high-voltage power
supply is operating. To avoid electrical shock, disconnect the power supply to the instrument,
unplug the power cord, and wait at least 1 minute before working on the instrument.

Class I

safety features are defeated)

Class IIIb, extremely

hazardous

Laser Radiation Laser radiation has two hazardous properties that make it different from lamp light or
sunlight. These properties are intensity and directionality.
Intensity
Some lasers are so intense that exposures to the eye of less than one-thousandth of a
second can cause permanent retinal burns and blind spots. Lasers lose very little
energy over small distances, and reflected laser light can be as hazardous as the
original beam.
Directionality
Laser radiation is directional and can radiate for a long distance with very little
scattering or dispersion.

Laser Safety ! WARNING LASER HAZARD. Exposure to direct or reflected laser light can burn the retina
Requirements and leave permanent blind spots. Never look directly into the laser beam. Do not defeat the
laser interlocks on the doors and/or panels. Do not remove the protective housing around the
laser assembly, or any other device designed to block the laser beam. Do not remove the laser
safety labels from the instrument.

Observe the following laser safety requirements:

Do not attempt to defeat the laser safety interlock switches on the doors and/or
panels. These switches turn the laser off when the doors or panels are open,
protecting the user from exposure to the laser beam.

The outside cabinet panels and doors of this product must always be in place
during operation.

Do not attempt to remove the protective housing around the laser assembly.

There should be no detectable radiation when the instrument is installed properly.

The installation and servicing of the laser must be performed only by

Applied Biosystems service personnel.

Do not remove or manipulate any beam-blocking device (for example, a

beam-stop bar), which may be present on the instrument.
Laser and power supplies of this instrument contain electrical circuits operating at
high voltages that can cause electrical shock.
