http://www.instructables.com/id/PORTABLE-SOLAR-AC-POWER/

Step 1: SOLAR PANEL SELECTION

SOLAR PANELS CAN BE VERY DIVERSE WITH A LARGE SELECTION FOR POWER USAGE, THE ONE I HAVE HERE IS ONLY CRANKING OUT 12VDC @ 70WATTS. COURTESY OF THE U.S. ARMY. LATER ABOUT POWER CONSUMPTION AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED.

Step 2: COLLECTING RECYCABLE MATERIALS

COLLECTING SCRAP WOOD FOR PORTABLE CART, YOU CAN BUILD YOUR CART OUT OF BETTER MATERIALS LIKE ALUMINUM OR WATER PROOF ENCLOSURES OR SUPPORTS. I BUILT MINE OUT OF SCRAP WOOD COLLECTED FROM A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN THE ARMY....AT NO COST TO ME...HA HA!!

http://www.instructables.com/id/PORTABLE-SOLAR-AC-POWER/

Step 3: HARDWARE NEEDED

HERE I HAVE COST FREE PARTS FROM THE U.S. ARMY NOT IN USE, AND EVENTUALLY WILL FINDS ITS WAY TO THE FIRE PIT..MOST OF WHICH YOU CAN BUY AT YOUR LOCAL HARDWARE STORE......AT THE BOTTOM A RECHARABLE 12VDC DEEP CYCLE LEAD, ACID FREE BATTERY SLOW DRAIN. 3 OR 4 CASTOR WHEELS WITH BRAKE LEVER, I USED THREE. 1 DC TO AC POWER INVERTER, 12VDC IN-120VAC OUT...CHEAP TO BUY AT WALMART...1 MINI CHARGE REGULATOR TO PREVENT BATTERY VOLTAGE GOING TO SOLAR PANEL....2 DOOR HINGES WITH SHEET METAL SCREWS.......ALL THE ELECTRICAL WIRE AND CONNECTORS COLLECTED AND STRIPED FROM BROKEN EQUIPMENT LIKE GAS POWERED GENERATORS...HA HA!!

Step 4: BATTERY TYPE

HERE IS THE BATTERY TYPE... YOU CAN FIND BATTERIES MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR SOLAR USE...LUCKELY I FOUND ONE FREE OF CHARGE....YOU CAN BUY COOL STUFF FROM THE U.S. ARMY AT VERY CHEAP PRICES @ U.S.ARMY DRMO FACILITIES....YOU HAVE TO GOOGLE, OR YAHOO THAT.....DRMO SELLS THINGS TO THE PUBLIC, PERSONAL OR BUSINESS

Step 5: MINI CHARGE REGULATOR

HERE IS WHAT CONTROLS THE BATTERY VOLTAGE FROM LEAKING BACK INTO THE SOLAR PANEL....VERY SIMPLE TO CONNECT.....THE FIRST THREE CONNECTORS TO THE LEFT( IN GREEN WITH BLUE) ARE THE NEGATIVES LEADING TO SOLAR PANEL, BATTERY, AND INVERTER...THE CONNECTORS IN RED ARE THE POSITIVES LEADING TO THE SOLAR PANEL, BATTERY, AND INVERTER....TO CONNECT TO BIGGER ITEMS LIKE APPLIANCES WHICH WILL OVER POWER THE INVERTER I HAVE HERE.....REPLACE THE INVERTER WITH AT LEAST A 3KWATT INVERTER TO POWER BIG POWER CONSUMPTION ITEMS INCLUDING MICROWAVES..

http://www.instructables.com/id/PORTABLE-SOLAR-AC-POWER/

Step 6: WOODEN CART

SIMPLE....FIT IT TO HOLD YOUR SOLAR PANEL, IF YOU WANT TO BE CREATIVE MAKE IT OUT OF METAL FOR BETTER SUPPORT AND MAYBE ADD AN ACTUATOR, MOTOR, AND PIVOT TO AUTOMATICALLY LIFT THE SOLAR PANEL WITH SENSORS TO FOLLOW THE SUNS PATH.....THAT WOULD BE AWESOME....

http://www.instructables.com/id/PORTABLE-SOLAR-AC-POWER/

Step 7: CASTORS WHEELS

HERE ARE 3 SIMPLE CASTOR WHEELS WITH LEVER BRAKES TO INSTALL ON YOUR CART, YOU CAN UPGRADE TO BIGGER, MUD TIRES PLACED ON THE SIDES TO MAKE IT LOOK AWESOME.....USE YOUR CREATIVITY TO MAKE YOUR CART....I KEPT IT SIMPLE FOR LACK OF MATERIALS, AND COST FREE ALSO.....

Step 8: FINISHED CART

HERE IS THE FINISHED RESULT FOR THE CART. NOTHING TO IT

Step 9: SOLAR PANEL INSTALL

HERE USE THE DOOR HINGES TO HOLD THE SOLAR PANEL. VARIOUS SIZES AND SHAPES ARE AVAILABLE AT YOUR HARDWARE STORE OR AT WALMART....BE CAREFUL WHEN DRILLING THROUGH THE PANEL FRAME NOT TO SCRATCH THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE PANEL..........THIS SOLAR PANEL IS IN THE $300 DOLLAR RANGE.....OUTCH! NOTICE HOW I ALSO MADE PLYWOOD SUPPORTS TO HOLD THE PANEL.....FIT TO SIZE............SIMPLE!!!

http://www.instructables.com/id/PORTABLE-SOLAR-AC-POWER/

Step 10: PANEL ELECTRICAL BOX

NOT MUCH DONE HERE.....ALL YOUR WIRING IS FACTORY MADE BY THE SOLAR PANEL MAKERS.....ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CONNECT TO +POSITIVE ON THE RIGHT, AND -NEGATIVE ON THE LEFT.....I USED SCRAP WIRE FROM AN EXTENSION CORD AND SOLDERED THE CONNECTORS ALONG WITH HEAT SHRINK TO WATER PROOF THE ENDS.....THE CONNECTORS ARE LATER SCREWED WITH MACHINE SCREWS THAT COME WITH THE PANEL.....NOTE!!!! NEVER SOLDER THE CONNECTORS IN PLACE....YOU CAN DAMAGE THE PANEL ALONG WITH THE DIODES...

Step 11: ELECTRICAL LAYOUT

HERE IS THE SIMPLE LAYOUT: NOTICE HOW I ADDED A POWER SURGE PROCTECTOR-BOTTOM LEFT, GOES DIRECTLY INTO THE INVERTER TOP CENTER. STEP2. BACK OF INVERTER YOU HAVE +POS AND -NEG TERMINALS WITH A 15AMP FUSE AT THE +POS.....CONNECT THE +POS (RED WIRE) FROM INVERTER TO +POS(RED CONNECTOR) IN THE MINI REGULATOR, IT IS MARKED LOAD.........SAME THING WITH THE BLACK WIRE FROM THE INVERTER...THATS IT......NOTHING TO IT..... STEP3. FROM MINI REGULATOR.....THE +POS IS MARKED BATT AND THE -NEG IS MARKED BATT ALSO......CONNECT THE +POS AND THE -NEG TO THE BATTERY.. THAT IT..... STEP 4. FROM SOLAR PANEL....CONNECT THE +POS AND THE -NEG FROM SOLAR PANEL TO MINI REGULATOR MARKED WITH THE WORDS( ARRAY)....YOU CAN SEE POWER GOING THROUGH THE THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT BY THE LED INDICATORS INCLUDING THE INVERTER....TINY GREEN LIGHT TO THE LEFT........AND THATS ALL FOLKS......

http://www.instructables.com/id/PORTABLE-SOLAR-AC-POWER/

Step 12: END RESULT

HERE IS WHERE THE DOOR HINGES COME IN PLACE, NOTICE HOW I USED A WOODEN STICK TO PROP UP THE SOLAR PANEL. FOR DIRECT SUNLIGHT....NOTE!!! NEVER USE THE BACK FLAT SURFACE OF THE SOLAR PANEL TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT..........USE THE BOX METAL FRAME TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT. YOU CAN USE ANALOG OR DIGITAL VOLTAGE GAUGES TO MONITOR THE AMOUNT OF POWER FROM ANY OF THE THREE POWER PRODUCING DEVICES.........THAT IS IT....WELL AT LEAST FOR NOW, UNTIL FURTHER UPGRADES

Aug 5, 2009. 6:16 PM REPLY Great instructable, very complete, and I particularly liked the idea of putting it on a cart. Very nicely done and with lots of thought to cheap parts. Not to harp on about it, but seriously, dude: say no to all caps. My ears hurt from reading, and that's a hard feat to accomplish.

Mar 7, 2010. 7:47 PM REPLY what are the limitations on this? exactly how much power can you get out of this continually and in peaks? how many devises can this operate? how many batteries can you charge with this to provide power continually at night or without light? how many of these will it take to meet the power needs of the average home? I'm just curious to know this info so as to consider all possibilities for application.

cid2323 says:

May 25, 2010. 2:37 PM REPLY There are many variables that will greatly affect the operation of a solar system, that would include panel wattage, battery, voltage regulators and power converters. Sunny or cloudy days...power consumption...three ways you can for sure have constant power without failure are: HYDRO, WIND, and SOLAR. If you are lucky enough to be around all three feeding that constant energy into a home with one or more....then you are golden. There are many good systems out there. It all depends what applications you want to use them for.... I forgot my original......SORRY I changed my account to cid2323 due to the fact

Mar 20, 2010. 12:10 PM REPLY Why did you attach the solar panel to a cart that can not be used outside in harsh weather or moved on anything other than a flat surface? Also, why in the name of god did you use all-caps?, they make you seem far less credible.

cid2323 says:
was just bored by keeping it simple, and sorry about the CAP thing...didnt realize I had it in caps was in a hurry to finish....

Sep 13, 2009. 5:51 PM REPLY ABOUT THE CAPS. IF YOU DON'T TYPE VERY WELL IT IS MUCH EASIER AS YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HITTING THE SHIFT KEY AND EVERYTHING COMES OUT CORRECT. WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO BE SO FREAKIN PICKY. EXCELENT JOB ON THE STRUCTABLE. TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT PEOPLE THAT HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN BE CRITICAL OF OTHER PEOPLES EFFORT.

Oct 21, 2009. 8:17 PM REPLY YEAH ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU DONT USE GRAMMAR I MEAN WHO CARES ABOUT GRAMMAR ANYWAY ITS NOT LIKE IT ACTUALLY MATTERS PLUS ITS NOT LIKE IT SEEMS LIKE YOURE YELLING OVER THE INTERNET, I MEAN WHO WOULD EVER THINK THAT I MEAN COMMON? EVERYONE KNOWS CAPS IS THE BEST WAY TO COMMUNICATE LIKE IN REAL LIFE WHEN YOU YELL ALL THE TIME IT MAKES YOU SOUND SMART :P But other than the caps, great instructable! I'm curious where you got the solar panel, you mentioned something about it being US Army Surplus? (and really, caps DO make it harder to read)

cid2323 says:

May 25, 2010. 2:41 PM REPLY ok I get it, enough about the CAP thing,......anyway, the panel was going straight to the burn pit so I thought I would build something.......and yes I forgot to take the caps offfffffff Oct 21, 2009. 9:39 PM REPLY IT AINT MY INSTRUCTABLE. Oct 25, 2009. 7:31 PM REPLY I second all the other sentiments here as it relates to the project. Great instructalbe. I built a smaller scale and now I have this to help me build a larger one. As for the caps issue, it's just a clash of the cultures that the Internet is (has been) forcing us as human beings to deal with. Some will adapt to new etiquette in the online culture and others won't. There's no "etiquette" police that I'm aware of...yet.

Oct 21, 2009. 9:08 PM REPLY In all seriousness, the capital letter aspect is NOT criticizing you, just something that you did. Those talking about the "naysayers whining and griping" need to understand that while it's a wonderful idea and 'ible, it's very frustrating to read capital letters. Jul 8, 2009. 9:40 PM REPLY Does the Portable Solar AC Power by jackson88 give out pure Sine Wave or is it square like ?Can we use this Portable Solar AC power for any AC appliance?

fatmazz says:

cid2323 says:

Sep 1, 2009. 1:18 PM REPLY not pure sine wave with cheap converters, if you want to plug in AC appliances you need a much more powerful converter that can crank out 3k watts or higher......

Apr 8, 2009. 10:23 AM REPLY i would have made a box, about 3 times the thickness of the solar panel, and have the inverter and everything inside of it and on the side have a gifci(i think thats right)outlet so you just take it outside and plug whatever on the side. and maybe some flat, small, thin lead acid batteries to the controller. hey, maybe i could built my own controller Feb 26, 2009. 10:04 PM REPLY This is an awesome instructable! Hope you win the contest! Can't believe that instead on placing importance on how this invention makes great use of solar energy, the fact that it is written in caps locks sidetracked everyone. Feb 23, 2009. 11:00 AM REPLY The actual project and most of the pictures look good, but the written content does not explain how you built this. It sort of says I DID THIS WITH SOME ARMY SURPLUS STUFF... HA HA! Could you re-write this (with CAPS-LOCK off)? L
