The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is a globally recognised health and safety qualification that is held by more than 100,000 people in the UK and world-wide.
What kind of people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate?
Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH Certificate as a first step on a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study.

Is the NEBOSH Certificate a recognised qualification?


The NEBOSH National General Certificate is accepted by IOSH the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). It is also accepted by The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) for associate membership.

Unit NGC1 (Management of health and safety) is common to the NEBOSH National General Certificate, the National Certificate in Construction and the Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management, enabling students to combine units across NEBOSH qualifications. Students do not need to re-sit any units already successfully achieved providing they were gained within the last five years.

What are the benefits for the organisation?


Many larger organisations choose the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a key part of their supervisors or management development programme. By ensuring that line managers have a sound understanding of the principles of risk management they build an effective safety culture in the company. Smaller organisations, operating in lower risk environments, often choose the NEBOSH National General Certificate as the appropriate qualification for the manager taking the lead on health and safety issues. How is the course assessed?


Candidates are assessed with written examinations for each of the two taught units. A unit certificate is issued denoting successful achievement of each unit. A Certificate parchment is issued on completion of the two units and the practical assessment.

Where can I take a course leading to the NEBOSH Certificate?

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is accredited at level 3 in the National Qualification Framework (NQF) by the regulatory authorities, including Ofqual.
