Without the support of the state or government, the stasis of statues was eschewed for the mobility of a march that chanted forgotten names down the city's streets as it walked past newspaper offices, shops and houses. A Punjabi poet reminded the gathering that the centenary was neither to celebrate the past nor consign it to history. It was to acknowledge and bear witness to the present. In the present, Punjab has appeared as a case of mistaken identity for Modi. In a public history lesson, earlier this week, the chief minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar, quite like an examiner, corrected Modi's history copybook. Neither the seat of learning, Takshila nor the site of Alexander's battle in the subcontinent was in Bihar, as Modi claimed. These sites, from the historic past, Kumar admonished, are in fact, in today's partitioned Punjab. You don't need Freud to recognize an "error" or 'slip' such as this by Modi is not an ill remembered "fact" that wishes to display mastery but betrays discomfort and unease. As a symbol of an iron-will (or lauh purush) Patel as conjured by Modi is aimed to be a fitting figure of Gujarat that he wishes to nationalize. Gujarat, though, is the birthplace of arguably the most famous Indian and the Father of the Nation.

Gandhi, as we know, was assassinated by members of the RSS. Gandhi's assassin Godse in his confession stated that he did so because he deemed Gandhi to be the "Father of Pakistan". A few months after this defining event and in a speech in Bombay on October 30, 1948, Patel with great sorrow explained, "We could not have secured India's Freedom by any other means. If we had not partitioned India, the consequences of what would have followed would have been much worse than what actually took place as a result of Partition... We had to pay the price for our liberty." Maulana Azad in his memoirs reinforces that Patel was a "believer" in the idea of partition. Yet it would be too easy and simple to declare Patel as a repressed figurehead of Hindutva, as Modi desires. In a speech in Lucknow on January 6, 1948 Patel urged the RSS to "discard fighting with lathis, daggers and brickbats. I appeal to young men of India to unify on all sides; do not forget that India was lost on account of foolishness".

Modi is setting the agenda on a weekly basis and everyone is following it knowingly or unknowingly. Even when he is just the PM candidate, he is generating jobs for all these journalists, social scientists, activists et al. The fact remains that Cong relegates anyone other than Nehru-Ghandi to the backstage. So this is a brilliant ploy by Modi. Cong and left wing media is now forced to mouth the virtues of PAtel, something they would never have done otherwise. This has brought Patel back into national consciousness. For this alone, Modi deserves credit.

The author is a History professor at Cambridge. What have you done with your life?! You are extremely ignorant. Firstly, Godse was an RSS worker; not even RSS disputes that. The only thing disputed is whether he was still a member in 1948. Gopal Godse, Nathuram's own brother, says that all Godse brothers were active RSS workers at the time. Sardar Patel hated the RSS. He is on record saying that RSS is the biggest threat to national security and unity, and that he is sure RSS's ideology contributed to the Mahatma's assassination. And as Home Minister, he personally took the decision to ban the RSS, and threw all its leaders in jail.

three points 1)Modi, unknowingly opened a can of worms. poor guy believed his saraswati shishu mandir history as the only canonical text, in which late congress and communist leaders( Bhagat Singh et. al) are portrayed as BJP/RSS .But it was nevertheless a great expose of modi and the sangh parivar... In reality, sardar did all he could to stop RSS, Hindu mahasabha and other muslim, sikh communal orgs . as to his criticism on RSS, anyone can check out Sardar's works. 2) modi, and many to justify him, claim sardar had to belong to INC as that was the only body at that time, and so nothing special. Ok. so, why was patel not in the INA, the Hindu Mahasabha, the Ghadar Party, the CPI, or the Hindustan Socialist Repulican Party, Forward Bloc or any other party. POint is, Sardar was a congressman through and through and stayed with the party till the very end. 3) If modi has so much love for the sardar, lets go back to history and see what the sardar wanted. sardar wantd Rss 2 b disolved n merged in2 congress. If modi loves him so much,he should please fulfil the sardar's dream.

Sardar was aware of the ideas of RSS very well. Still he invited RSS to merge with Congress. What it means. He was not averse to Congress accommodating the views of RSS. The INC of pre partition was not the present INC. It was a movement. Different leaders were having different personalities i.e. views on political and economical matters. There was a difference betwen Patel and Nehru.

Except for people belonging to one family no one else is respected in Congress(I). Shastry of earlier congress and Narasimha Rao of Cong (I) were great contributors, never recognized by the current looters. Original Congress had many leaders who were balancing various factors. Nehru's legacy made it one dimensional. Also Gandhiji wanted to dissolve Congress. Congressmen should respect their own leader's wish before expecting others.

once again, fekularization is no more acceptable. your last lie was " congress did not give ads of sardar"... a little fact finding found that congress had, in fact spent more than 8 crore times of what the bjp spent: nill, zero, zilch. gandhi did not want congress dissolved as a political party, or else he wouldnt have blessed nehru and sardar as the leaders of the newly formed post-colonial nation called India

Why Narendra Modi is claiming Sardar Patel's legacy - The Economic Times
Iyer (India) 8 Hours ago

What is this stupid, immature author trying to state in this sprawling, overreaching article that tries to do too much, and ends up doing too little? Modi is not alone among BJP or RSS cadres who have professed admiration for Sardar Patel. Being a Gujarati himself, it makes perfect sense for him to wish to erect a proper memorial for him to ensure he isn't forgotten by history, as certain "secular" elements in the Congress Party have willfully chosen to do over the past some 60 years. So he got the location of Taxila wrong and mixed up the two Chandraguptas. Big deal. Sure, like something as STUPID and INSIGNIFICANT as that is going to make us change our vote for Modi! LOL! Sane, balanced, and reasonable Indian voters are more concerned about the character and personal qualities of the person who stakes the claim to leading the nation, not whether he has a perfect grasp over historical minutiae. We want a good administrator to lead the nation and restore to it a semblance of self-respect the Congress party has utter and totally ROBBED the nation of, not a headmaster! - P.S. Gandhi was NOT assassinated by the RSS - to state so is borderline libelous, and were I in charge of the RSS, I would SUE the disingenuous impertinence of this author. Gandhi was in fact, assassinated by a mentally imbalanced political renegade who was once upon a time associated with the RSS, and had NOTHING to do with the organization at the time of the assassination. Talk about historical ignorance!

To answer why BJP is claiming SP, its simple, he remained unclaimed for 60 years so its anybody's call. its Imperative that all freedom fighters were Congress leaders since that was the ONLY dominant pre-independence political party.. THE single objective of this articles appears to be jeopardizing BJP's move to associate with SP. \n\r While I hardly cares about the outcome of this episode, I see some positive things coming out after absorbing few facts. 1. Realizing the critical role that SP played in Indian politics, we have many other unsung heroes who need to be brought in limelight/ on national canvas for our next generation 2. Till now Congress never ever made any cognizant attempt to project any NON (GANDHI /NEHRU) leader on national canvas. Yes, they had to accept B R Ambedkar after Dalit Movement but still it was more like a trade-off politics than being core part of mainstream congress. 3. BJP was just lucky to sight this opportunity and made no mistake in exploiting with this move. From this political opportunism of BJP , one good thing that came up for Indian politics is need of addressing National leadership beyond nehru/gandhi canvas; specially with time, Congress is realizing that these old gimmicks will work no more for Indian voters.

How can the philosophy of treating the majority religion as not mainstream continue. One cannot forget that it was Nehru who forced Gandhi to accept the twonation theory.

Better than Nehru supporting Jinnah and his two nation theory. Imposing Section 376 and agreeing to a Plebiscite.
